Enur feat. Natasja "Calabria" pop crossover?

This track has been around in the past couple of years in a couple of different versions, but recently it seems that "Calabria" has been starting to cross over into the pop market. A version of this titled "Calabria 2007" (the one with rapper MIMS?) has been climbing up both on NYC's Z100 and Philly's Q102's playlist charts, and it's also the top song downloaded on iTunes Dance Chart for the past couple of weeks. Does anyone has an opinion of this record, and do you think that it actually has a good chance of making it into the US pop Top 40?

it'll be in the Top 40 any second now, as Z 100 and long island's WBLI have been cranking it relentlessly...
this is considered by most as a Latin leaning /flavor track, certainly not the house/dance genre in any way.......

I had heard this song about a year ago by the name "Destination Calabria" by Alex Gaudino with Crystal Waters. Mostly on UK stations.

I recently heard another remix of "Calabria" that I really liked...with Pitbull and Lil Jon.

I was really saddened to hear about Natasja's tragic death in a car accident in Jamaica. She sounded great and was gaining popularity with her vocals in "Calabria". Damn shame.

The original "Calabria" was done by Rune a few years ago.

At Robbins, we put out a version by Dirty Laundry then came the Alex Gaudino mashup (which used 2 records we put out) and now the Enur. It's a really good record but I still don't consider it to be dance. The other version were all real dance versions. This is sort of a Dancehall version.

I agree. Not 'dance' as we define it in dance radio.

Come on guys, this is dance. Latin flavored pop? What category should we assign it to then- salsa, merengue, reggaeton? As far as the grammy's will be concerned this one will be dance, and frankly, I understand this song being a dance track moreso than the Madonna's or the Justin Timberlake's. Also, look back at the history dating back to how our community felt when it was first added to WPOW- we certainly chalked it up to a dance track; I don't see why this should change now.

With that said, I'm personally impressed it's made it onto WPYO- number 20 in fact according to YES.COM, making this the FIRST dance track to be heard on that station since its flip to POWER. Still, I'll admit it's sad I'm getting excited by this feat when if the station was still Party they'd be all over that Filo and Peris - Anthem (which is by the way picking up steam on Sirius' The Beat). Calabria is also taking off on WPOW's sister station, WRDW in Philly.

Interesting WPYO didn't follow WPOW's lead with the DJ Laz track, though. Let's see what happens next year, as Florida stations (namely Power 96) seem to be leading the states in breaking dance songs (as I feel it did with this track) after being not so friendly to dance music the last few years. Bob Sinclar is STILL being played on the radio down here, and I see "Together" being another staple.

Guys, this is not the end of the war but it is an indicator that the mainstream audiences might be warming up to more upbeat- dare I say it- dance tracks in 2008.

This is America's version of dance music. "Destination Calabria" was the dance song of 2007. Just because a song has a dance beat doesn't make it a 'dance' song (in the dance radio format genre). You can find dance stations that play the Enur track, but they're target audience may not be pure dance. It isn't fair to assume that station X in country X has the same type of audience that the traditional CHR or Dance station has here. Culture has a huge influence on a listeners expectation of a station. I would expect to hear Enur in a club if it has a mixed audience of hip hop and dance.

We chose to not play Enur on Energy 98 because it comes on the heels of "Destination Calabria". Why would we choose to play a song that has the same melody of a song we just spun 1000 times? We do play some rap songs. But they're designed as dance songs and not a dance track with rapping on it. I have not decided if I'll add it to Clear Channel's Club Phusion yet. Phusion did not have "Destination Calabria" in rotation as a current and it's target audience is slightly more mainstream than E98.

I'm also noticing that more hip hop songs are picking up the tempo. But a station with core artists of Timbaland and Kanye do not a dance station make. Stations like 'POW and 'PYO are not dance stations. A few token uptempo songs in rotation are not worthy of the title.

that "Anthem" is weak, there are much better "Anthem"s out there.....

While, correct me if I'm wrong, the song has been out there for quite some time now (a lot of the mix show dj's on this forum can attest to having it in rotation long before now) getting exposure NOW on Sirius makes the song new and relevant in listeners ears. Maybe there is a version that some listeners will enjoy better- but if they hear this version and go out and discover a remix they like better, well, everyone in the dance community still wins. Along the way they will have listened to a number of other dance songs or remixes. Regardless, as a community we need to support (or at least not blast) what Joe Listener might stumble across and potentially enjoy even if it's not our cup of tea.

No, WPOW and WPYO are NOT not are likely to ever become pure dance stations, or even stations that play levels of dance music that they played in the past. Still, progress is progress, and if either station continued on as a straight ahead Rhythmic/CHR, then the one or two dance songs they play an hour is GREAT exposure for the dance genre. That's what it is going to take to hook the next generation of dance music junkies.

And again, it all comes down to "what is going to get the masses to appreciate the genre?" Sure, if we program stations to our own personal interests we're going to not spin a lot of bubblegum pop we don't care for, but the reality of it is that it's in our best interests to play those songs. Hip hop stations haven't ceased playing Kanye since his mainstream success. In fact, its liable to lead to listener frustration if they hear a Kanye song they like, but aren't able to hear it again on the hip hop station as would intuitively make sense.

Regarding the argument of the song being too similar to the former version, well, it's very much akin to a station squeezing additional airplay out of a dying song by switching to a remix after it slips. Let me ask you, do you plan on still spinning the former version in any time of heavy rotation? Reason I'm asking is that if the two songs were both CURRENT heavy rotation songs, then I see the argument, but IMHO a song that WAS heavy rotation in the past shouldn't affect a programming decision regarding a song with similar structure, but this might not apply to this particular situation as I'll elaborate in a second. I can cite many examples of major stations that have done this, however, if Energy isn't positioned towards picking up a mainstream audience, as you suggest, then I understand your position. Instead, consider this for your Club Phusion channel.

Regards.

I consider it a Dance track, just a more Latin Urban Dance track. I hear it on Music Choice Dance and XMs BPM all the time.... Very fun song.

Natasja (the voice of Enur for those that don't know) was a singer of R&B/Reggae/Hip-Hop. This song fits categorically better into those genres, Dancehall especially, then it does "Dance".

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't like the song. But this is only dance in the sense that any song with a rhythm, like all of them, is dance.

Will this song continue to crossover, it could as it's climbing the BB Hot 100 chart slowly but surely. But this isn't going to be the song that people can say "saved" dance music for 2007.

Also, in Miami, Y-100 plays more dance music than Power. Check out Cato K on one of the 4 or 5 nights he's on. ;)
