ESPN 3 Is Coming...

IndyCar fans know its gone. But, alas, NASCRAP has taken over for real racing.

In that case there is already an "ESPN 8" available for viewing. It's called Versus.

Although many love to bash Versus, I'm glad there is an alternative to ESPN and the various Fox Sports Nets (sort of like having Linux in the mix with Windows and Mac.) Yes, much of Versus' programming is dreck, but those of us who remember the early days of ESPN recall that their schedule was filled with a lot of garbage. With Comcast buying NBC, Versus should be in a position for phenomenal growth--unless the suits screw things up.

good point, remember, ESPN pretty much made NASCAR and the old Arena League more mainstream. Versus can help the struggling leagues stay on a national scale and produce alternate programming to the all-Danica, LeBron & Kobe networks.

I totally agree about Versus sort of mirroring ESPN's early days. But unfortunately I just don't think we will see a major competitor to the Bristol boys any time soon. They have taken on so many sports in recent years that there's not much left out there. Plus look at all the ESPN[city].com sites they are starting up. I hate to say it but they're bound to put local sports reporters and writers out of business!

Oh good! There's just not enough sports channels out there these days. Now I'll know why when my cable bill goes up.

Just to reiterate, ESPN3 is actually going to be the rebranding of its broadband "ESPN360.com" service, and not, if I understand correctly, another cable channel.

I'd like it if they would make espn360 available on a subscription basis. I use Road Runner at home and can't get it because TWC doesn't have an agreement with ESPN. My other alternative is AT&T dsl but then I would lose my bundling discount with Time Warner and AT&T doesn't offer Uverse tv in my area yet.

Those last few words are key.

That said though, Versus has been to TV what Sporting News has been to radio. Only difference is SNR doesn't broadcast live events like Versus does (Though many of SNR's affiliates do broadcast live events locally).

I see Versus/Universal Sports not only continuing their current trend, but also becoming a bit more talk-oriented similar to what ESPN does during the weekdays during the daytime (Only doing so at nights too). This way, they capitalize on what Sporting News failed to see in their obvious lack of vision.

Thoughts?

Cheers :D
