ESPN 98.7?

Apaarently there are 96 million reasons why Emmis sold the intellectual property of KissFM to YMF Media (the soon-to-be owners of WBLS). See second part of the AllAccess article linked below:

Oh, my God! While they switch the FM station over to ESPN-FM, 1050 AM is going to switch to Spanish Sports! ESPN Deportes is coming to the Big Apple! Who knows how long until it hits Beantown?

The Spanish flip does not happen until September.

Boston barely has a English ESPN never mind deportes!!

ESPN Radio New York essentially remains the same - particularly mornings since virtually all ESPN affiliate stations are obligated to take that show (Mike and Mike) if they want the rest of the programming.

ESPN New York is currently taking 10 hours per weekday of national programming (usually more on weekend days when not airing Jets games and the ensuant wrap-around local programming). This is about the minimum amount of national hours an ESPN affiliate can take - maybe the absolute minimum of all (?).

I'm sure an exception is made for New York due to the importance of trying to sell local advertising in the market while competing with WFAN. All this while they do clear national advertising, which may be seen as the main priority, moreso if this was Radio Disney we were talking about.

Generally speaking, WFAN took in just over $40 million in revenue in 2011 while WEPN took in around $7 million.

In the ESPN press release, some other lineup changes were announced, however:

http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/story/_/id/7857507/espn-new-york-1050-moving-987-fm-dial

Weekdays:

Midnight-4am ESPN Sportsnight/Overnight (national)
4-6am Maxed Out with Jared Max (local)
6-10am Mike and Mike (national)
10am-Noon Colin Cowherd - In The Herd (national)
Noon-1pm Mike Lupica with Don LaGreca (local)
1-3pm Steven A. Smith with Ryan Ruocco (local)
3-6pm Michael Kay with Don LaGreca (local)
6-9pm Dave Rothenberg (local)
9pm-Midnight Bill Daughtry (local)

Weekends/Saturdays:

10am-Noon Patrick McEnroe with Robin Lundberg
(could also fill in during the week)

The format change occurs on 98.7 FM at Midnight Sunday night 4/29/12-Monday morning 4/30/12.
At that moment, Steven A. Smith will be the first host on the new frequency (which will be simulcast on 1050 AM); he'll do a local show (maybe until 4am when Jared Max comes in).

WEPN has gone almost all-local on a couple of occasions, usually after weekend NY Jet playoff games/important NY Jet regular season games.

1050 becomes ESPN Deportes? What a waste of 50,000 watts. You heard it, 50,000 WATTS!

And why aren't they taking 101.9? I'd love to see "FM Fluff 101.9" gone-it's the "Blink" II-without music.

Why is a sports station in Spanish in a market that is 22% Hispanic a waste?

Most 50kw stations are news/talk or English sports, like KSTP 1500 for example. Putting ESPN Deportes on 1050 is quite a waste of spectrum. Just like having AM 730 in Vancouver, all traffic and a several-hundred mile range at night.

The first "Kiss" station I know of was WKYS in DC, starting around 1976.

KISS in San Antonio was the first "Kiss" as it has the calls and was using the name since the late-40's. I believe 1947 was when it started.

KIIS (then an AM at 1150) started calling itself "Kiss" in 1970. It acquired KKDJ (102.7) in 1975, changed its call letters to KIIS-FM, which has called itself "Kiss-FM" ever since.

Probably not coincidentally, the first PD at KIIS-AM was Sonny Melendres, who came to L.A. from San Antonio.

WAQI and WQBA Miami, KTNQ in LA. WADO in New York. KFLC in Dallas. XEWW in San Diego.

It takes a huge signal to penetrate the dense urban areas of markets like those. The main use of higher power today is to overcome urban noise and interference, not to get useless, unsalable listenership out of the metro area (nights are pretty much unsalable, anyway)

Traffic is a pretty good option for 730 in Vancouver... killer signal in the places where traffic might be the worst.

Seems to me that sports in Spanish with several million people who speak that language along the Eastern Seaboard makes a lot more sense than local traffic reports in any language outside that city.

 :'( Very sad to hear about this.
Was that necessary?

Once WRKS is gone, are there any other "Kiss FM" stations left in the USA that are not CHR/Top 40 stations owned by Clear Channel?

Miami's 99.9 Kiss is Country.

Ironically, SATX is the backyard of Clear Channel, which owns the "Kiss" name.
