ESPN BLAMED AGAIN FOR HIGH CABLE/SATELLITE FEES

That's just ESPN. ESPN2, ESPNEWS, ESPNU, ESPN Classic, ... are extra.

Can't say as we'll be seeing it go away either. The other thread on here says ESPN's profit
margin is 25%. Not much they can do except lower game costs or let another network
carry them.

Maybe they just have too many ESPNs and need to downsize.

They just renewed their MNF contract, with the league extorting getting 63% more money from them. Expect those fees to get even higher.

Don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen.

They indicated that Fox Sports also exert upward pressure on everyone's monthly cable bill. That's a network I'd happily do without. Too bad that you can't "opt out" on some of these channels.

E$PN's policy of only allowing "friendly" ISPs (those that pay off E$PN) to access ESPN3(dot com), and their refusal to permit anyone to purchase a subscription for "ESPN3" was one of the many reasons I dropped my satillite TV subscription back in August. When the Pay TV providers start permitting ala carte subscriptions, then I might return. As a pay TV subscriber for years, I could never access "ESPN3" because my ISP was not on the cable channel's approved list of ISP's.

According to what I was told by my internet provider Ygnition Networks (not a "cable" provider - they subcontract with Dish), E$PN wants $5 from every one of their customers for E$PN3, whether it gets accessed or not. Ygnition said "fuhgeddaboudit." They didn't want to jack their rates that much. I'm willing to pay for it, but The Mickey Mou$e Outfit doesn't want to work that way.

The link above is a story from this morning's Los Angeles Times sports, in regards to the Lakers' new regional networks, how they're going after the Dodgers' broadcast rights, and how in turn it could threaten the future of one of Fox's Southern California sports networks if the Dodgers were to depart from Fox Sports. Fox Sports West & Prime Ticket will eventually lose the Lakers, Pac-12 sports, and Galaxy soccer. That'll leave the Clippers, Kings, Ducks, Angels, Chivas USA, and the lower-tier local college sports...still a lot of invertory, but they don't exactly bring in the same ratings as the Lakers and Dodgers.

I know the Fox Sports regional networks charge at least $3 a month, per subscriber, but each of these networks carry more live sports than the others. Their biggest regions, in terms of the number of live games, are FSNs South/SportSouth, West/Prime Ticket, Florida/Sun Sports, and Southwest...and even those feeds (except West/PT) are split-up regionally.

I only get broadcast channels, TV Guide Channel and WGN but I have no use for sports. I say offer a package that doesn't have it.

ABSOLUTELY---a lot of folks, myself included, have little or no use for TV sports...why force us to pay for it. Put it on a Sports tier and charge accordingly to the sports fans.

I have limited basic cable from Comcast. I get the locals, QVC, TBS and The Weather Channel in HD, along with NECN (New England Cable News), the so-called PEG channels and CPTV Sports (formerly CT-SN). It's enough for me these days, since I don't watch too much TV, compared to say just 10 years ago.

I forgot to mention that my bill is about $21 a month right now. A typical digital lineup here in New Britain, CT would include YES (Yankees and Nets), NESN (Red Sox and Bruins), SNY (Mets) and Comcast Sports Net (Celtics). Obviously, I don't receive any of them at this time.

Never happen. If non-sports fans were be allowed to opt out, the cost spread among the remaining subscribers would be so high, they'd lose a lot of sports fans, too.

And then the rights fees fall. You're right, won't happen. Gotta pay the Manning brothers their fair share.

The NFL wouldn't go broke - CBS, Fox, and NBC are paying most of the TV money. The Mickey Mou$e Outfit would just have to move the MNF games back to ABC to get a decent audience.

The NBA might be in some trouble, though, since they've removed most of their games from broadcast TV. A few Sunday afternoons on ESPNonABC and some local telecasts, and only some teams, are all that's left.

Actually, non-sports fans opting out would be the best thing for the OTA networks since color. It still won't happen.

Then again, it could...the FCC almost put thru an ala-carte rule awhile back. Next time, it could happen.

I cut the cord and went OTA, but Dish Network does have a nice family package I might purchase next year. $25.00 a month and no sports channels. I get enough sports OTA and radio.

Are you sure there's no sports in the package. I remember when I had DirecTV 'til 10 years ago, I didn't have any sports package, but ESPN 1 & 2 were in the most basic package. If that's the case today, you're paying for ESPN, whether you watch it or not).

The only sports channel is the CBS sports network.
