ESPN Radio in Melbourne

Switching from oldies, not a bad move. Also people that listen to spots radio during the day are not tuning in at night to get scores... It is a very good move for them

Re: The other problem is

Being a daytimer, they won't be able to run any kind of sporting event at night (like ESPN radios coverage of the baseball playoffs for example). Quite a few of those games are on at night. Not to mention the world series.

People will still listen to the daytime talk shows, especially in their cars. ESPN is among the better sources of talk programming available out there.

Finally a Sports station that South Brevard can hear. 1st time ever unless you count 540 or WMEL when they had sportstalk on overnights with the former Sportsfan Radio network with J.T the Brick.
It will be on car radio's and some offices. including mine

It's simple, really. WIXC abandoned the sports ESPN format because it was never able to get more than a 0.8 share with its 50,000 watt county-wide 7x24 signal after trying for four years. WINT is 5000 watts and reaches an 8 mile radius around its transmitter site in Palm Bay. Its current listeners for the oldies format are not going to listen to sports. They will tune into one of two places: WSHB 98.5 "The Beach" or WIXC "Wixie" 1060. Who will tune in to ESPN? Only some smaller subset of the 0.8 share that tuned into ESPN on WIXC. I can't see how this is a smart move at all. Without a major leage sports team in any sport, I don't think Melbourne can ever support an ESPN affiliate radio format.

i believe you can hear wint in cocoa beach? i remember being able to hear the well in cocoa beach. so, let me remind you all how many formats have failed on wint from 2001 to now.
in 2001 we had "1560 the touch" that went away in november and then we had "cnn radio" from nov of 2001 to about august of 02 i'd say. then we had "the music of your life" from the end of 02 to about 2007. then true oldies, then now espn. so that is 4 formats in the past 7 years. it is like nothing can go on wint. well, i think the day time thing has a big factor in that. so we will see how long this one lasts... not long, i can tell you... who wants to bet that station will become brokered just like weus here in orlando? i woudl not be surprised if that happened... or maybe someone will buy it and slap a good format on there :).

The signal actually goes well North of Cocoa. They'll package advertising with the rest of the cluster hitting a younger demo, and manage to make a buck or two. This is the company that's still sticking with a 1.2 share for "rock" on the lowest rated FM in the county ... so either they're brilliant or idiots [there's a fine line between the two].

My suggestiong, since NOBODY runs NASCAR in this side of the state (not even in O'town), they should try to pick up MRN as well --- group that w/ some "rac'n parties" that Hitkicker has @ Hooters and they've got 36 weekend promo's per year.

if you have a good enough radio, you can hear wint here in altamonte. not that well but you can hear it... just wanted to throw that out there. not that it matters but i figured someone may be interested.

A few things I've noticed:
On Sat Oct 11th, I picked WINT up all the way out to Orlando International (on my way to Gainesville) ... better signal than one might expect.

Did you see the ads in FL Today? Was Mike Greenburg holding his crotch while pointing into the sky?

I manage to list 15-20 mins weekdays going to work and coming home ... not sure I've heard a local commercial yet during prime drive time ... can you make money that way?

I knew about the WINT flip a week before it was going to happen, as a Cume-u-less employee told me.

Im not sure much planning went into this, only because they simply wanted to grab it up.. makes alot of sense to have the format on though.

I hope they add some local shows.. oh, and move 1560 out of the broom closet studio it's in!(It's REALLY SMALL).

But, Cume-u-less will be moving their facility across the street/down the road a bit soon so Im sure things will be imrpoved upon there.

I don't care how good your radio is, you couldn't hear the World Series on WINT. How can you have a sports format and not carry the ESPN radio coverage of the World Series?

When Cumulus moves across the street to the Oaks I still don't think they'll be carrying the World Series. Heck, they could move into the Taj Mahal and they won't be carrying the World Series - at least not any night games (and they're all night games). And they don't have Monday Night Football from Westwood One. Lot's of deficiencies. Mike and Mike are not enough to carry the format in a market with no major league sports teams.

I think the point is WINT will move to the Taj Mahal while Mike-and-Mike play in the World Series after the defunt Orlando Renegades and the former USFL are resurrected and start playing baseball in the Oaks...

This argument about not being able to carry games would be relevant in Ny, Boston , Atlanta and most of the larger metro areas that have teams and a large fanbase interested in those teams' games....If you're in Melbourne the absolute closest you get to this is the Orlando Magic...I'd bet there are almost as many Celtics, Knicks, Lakers fans as Magic fans.....If we're talking baseball More Red Sox and Yankee fans than either of the Florida teams...can't remember the last time I heard anyone talk about either of the Florida hockey teams....About the only games of any local relevance that get lost because this a daytime station would be local high school football on Friday nights...With that said, I think ESPN radio covers the one existing niche during the day that nobody else was covering since 1060 decided to become HEEHAW radio. If someone wants oldies they have a nice clear FM signal to listen to. As a listener in the 25-44 demo, all I know is that most of my friends in that same demo are thrilled to have some kind of sportstalk to hear on a daily basis....Yeah, I wish they were talking about my Yankees, Knicks, and Giants more, but, by the same token I'm very glad they're not talking about the Dolphins, Jaguars, Buccaneers, Marlins, Magic 24/7...or in this case 15/7.... I don't know of many 25-44's that were listening to Scott Shannon's oldies format on that frequency...I do know quite a few that are listening to the sportstalk on it now...is it perfect? Hell no...But, it seems like a good move.

moving to ESPN was a brilliant move, now WINT finally hits a decent audience and blocked 1060 from going back to ESPN after Classic Country failed

Absolutely, now Genesis is screwed as I doubt they want to spend much money on a station to put on their own format.

Anyone who misses The True Oldies Channel on 1560 WINT should just tune to 98.5 The beach.. it's way better.

I guess my point was that a bigger station with a bigger 7x24 signal was only able to draw less than a 1 share in the market, so how will WINT as a smaller signal daytime station do better? What will they do differently with ESPN in a small market with no professional sports franchise that will cause it to succeed? At least when Genesis was doing it they had local high school football and other local content. I don't see it working well for WINT at all.
