According to their website, WPHY is evidently airing Villanova and LaSalle basketball games this year. Last I knew, Penn Quakers football was on WVCH 740 AM. I don't think any Penn basketball games are on the radio. Why aren't you satisfied with this with what local college games that are on the radio? WPHY and WVCH are airing local college games. Too bad they aren't "national" games such as Notre Dame, Texas, Florida State, or USC. Deal with it. What you are demanding isn't going to happen. Pretty soon, you are going to demand that Delaware State University athletics be aired on WHAT or WURD, since Delaware State is a college predominantly geared towards the "african-american" student (such as the other colleges in the conference Delaware State competes in).
Correction: The Penn games were on 920 AM WPHY for the last 2-3 seasons.

Julius: since your latest obsession is with Penn Quakers play-by-play, you may be interested in this website I found. It has a collection of radio audio and television highlights of Penn Quakers sports.

http://www.letsgoquakers.com

According to that site, Penn Quakers football has been on "ESPN Radio" for the past three seasons, as you said. I didn't know they had moved from WVCH to WPHY.

I think that we should contact Penn and ask them to move their football games to a Philly Radio station for this season.

"ask them to move their games to a Philly station this season"... they can't just move it.

sure, they could just kmove it if they paid for time on 1540, but i doubt they'll do that.. and unless the geams are a ratings.revenue producer.. no big station is goig to want them.

I wouldn't mind if they were on 1540, 860, 1340 AM and even if some of the stations has to stay on the air after sundown, as long I can hear the games, that's what's important. If you want to contact Penn about the radio broadcasts of the football games this season go to www.penn.edu or http://www.pennathletics.com/

There will be no ESPN Radio on either signal.....why would this keep coming up? You have ESPN Radio on AM 920...enjoy it there. If anything it will be alternative or spanish, maybe even country to cut WXTU down to size, but not ESPN.

Re: Attn Julius I got the answer.

Yes Julius, I called and did research on why the games you want will not be carried on ESPN radio or any local Philly station. The management has decided to carry the Philadelphia La Crosse team and also decided to do all play by play tennis for the professional Philadelphia tennis team. And far as I know, they are already discussing plans to carry all the Philadelphia Phantoms and Hershey Bear's scheduled hockey games along with the Philly professional indoor soccer team which will have conflict not just on ESPN AM 920 but these games will be spread out among the other stations like 560 AM, 990 AM, 104.5 FM, 1260 AM, and 950 PEN. So that means there going to have very little Penn Quakers play by play. I was very concerned too about the Penn Quakers myself so i called around the contacts of these stations and they explained to me the reason why. Their research shows that their audience listens to these games more then the Quakers. I'm very upset about this too, It's a bummer for both of us. I'm pissed as much as you are, but that's how radio goes.

P.S. (the rest of you)
take it for what it's worth, I'm trying to get rid of him and all his post but there 's still some people that keep feeding the pigeons.

Julius: stations like 1540 AM can't stay on after sundown. If they did, they would face hefty fines from the FCC. 1540 AM is a "daytimer." 1540 has to go off the air at sundown to protect another station. Also, Penn football games are in the daytime anyway, so what difference does it make? I highly doubt those radio stations really give a damn what you want. Your silly demands will go ignored. You were never interested in Penn football until a couple of days ago. If you are that interested in Penn football, why not just go to Franklin Field and watch the game in person? If you don't have a car, you can take public transportation...such as a taxi, bus or subway. SEPTA doesn't cost that much.

If Penn football were to move to another station, their current agreement/contract with WPHY would have to terminate first. I'm sure Penn is happy with 920AM for now. They just can't move to another station on a whim.

For now, the ESPN Radio affiliation is staying on 920 AM. Penn Quakers football play-by-play will be on 920 AM this year. Get over it.

This topic is more than stale now. It's got Penicillin growing on it.

Apco: keep fighting the good fight. You have my support. I think it's a lost cause though. You did bring up a legit topic, in terms of Phantoms play-by-play. I always wondered why there were never any Phantoms games on the radio, especially during the most recent NHL lockout. I thought it was silly for WIP to not use their radio guys to do Phantoms games, considering that was the only professional hockey in town at the time. However, I'm not blaming WIP for this. Perhaps, the Higher-Ups at the Flyers weren't interested in having their AHL team on the radio.

Pretty much you answered your own question. When baseball was on strike, they had replacement players instead of minor league or Triple AAA players due to the conflict it would cause with their affiliate major franchise. As far as broadcasting, the Reading Phillies, or Scranton's local flagship would be alright, because there already contracted.....but for WPHT to broadcast them , it would probably cause turmoil or it wasn't worth carrying in a ratings period.

Huh? The replacements were used only in major league spring training 1995, when the unionized major leaguers were still on strike. Most of them WERE minor leaguers. There are several still in the majors today: Cory Lidle, Kevin Millar, Ron Mahay, Frank Menechino, and a couple of others.

During the 1981 strike, which happened during the regular season, several major league flagships DID air Triple-A games. Since the use of replacement players occurred during March of 1995, there were no minor league games available to air, so the flagships were stuck with the exhibitions featuring replacement players. By the time the minor league season began, the strike had been settled.

But the last strike back in the 90's, they were all replacement players, but no one from any triple A teams. But even though the strike was settled before the actual season started (one day I believe before the opening season), the majors were putting pressure on the minors not to fill in. Yes I'm sure there were a few replacement players signed afterwards, and the other strike that cancelled half the season, the following year many minor leaguers just got moved up quickly to the majors.

Let's get back to the topic. The problem is that 920 AM has a very bad signal in Philadelphia, Nassau needs to do something about it so the station can be better heard in Philadelphia and the entire Delaware valley day and night. I think as listeners, we need to complain to Nassau and WPHY and tell them they need to fix their signal or move to another dial setting . This whole play by play sports problem in Philly can be solved if We complain to Nassau and get a better signal for ESPN Radio in Philadelphia. We should be thankful for ESPN 920 AM for broadcasting play by play games that the Philly AM/FM stations skip or don't air at all but we need to be able to hear them in the city loud and clear. If you want to contact Nassau Broadcasting: http://www.nassaubroadcasting.com/ and ESPN 920 AM: http://www.920espn.com/

Julius says: We should be thankful for ESPN 920 AM for broadcasting play by play games that the Philly AM/FM stations skip or don't air at all

I say: Julius is thankful that WPHY is airing these games, but yet he still complains about them and how the games belong on another station? There is no pleasing this kid.

Nassau can't do anything about the station's signal. The FCC mandates how strong their signal can be. It's not Nassau's fault. Your silly demands and complaints should be directed to the FCC, and not Nassau. You have been told this a number of times over the years, that it's not one particular station's fault their signal isn't that great in certain areas. Why don't you understand this yet? I am doing my best to be patient with you, and I'm answering your concerns the best I can. There are others who have responded to your concerns as well. However, you still find something to complain about. Your problems with WPHY's signal need to be directed to the FCC...and not to this message board or the Corporate Stiff Necks at Nassau. I'm sorry as hell that I'm not agreeing with everything you say, or telling you what you want to hear...but it's the way it is. Deal with it.

For once, I agree with you. If you want to also complain to the FCC: http://www.fcc.gov/

Shawn, I'm sure if Julius read your post (or anybody else's) and paid any attention, he'd be very upset. :'(

Julius has some idea of what SHOULD be on the radio.
He has decided his idea of what SHOULD be on the radio MUST be everybody else's idea.
His idea is NOT based on what he wants to hear. He admits he watches the games (and press conferences on TV) - yes, the same games he complains are not on the radio.

He won't go on the Radio Racket because somebody might challenge what he says and he would have to listen and answer. So he comes up with this story about how - even though he is 24 years old - his mother won't allow him to use the telephone or the computer after 10 pm on Friday night.

People have offered to hold a pledge drive to get Julius satellite radio. But he really doesn't want to listen to the games. He just thinks they SHOULD be available.

I do listen to the games on the Radio but we can't afford to get Sirius and or XM . My whole point is that the games that are on TV should be on Radio. WIP doesn't carry every news conference like they should. This is just my opinion. If you don't like my views on the boards, fine. I would mind calling into the radio racket and listen to the answer. Yes I'm a stubborn person and not accepting the answers to my posts but that's going to change. I will be open minded with every response I get and accept the answers from now on but this is one topic the play by play sports in Philly radio that I intend with the help of the posters to correct. One thing I forgot to add, the stations don’t promote the games they are airing.

I say: You have said this same exact thing several times before. You won't change, even though you promised me in an e-mail that you would, when you were reinstated here. I don't believe anything you say anymore. I don't care if you don't like what we have to say to you. Deal with what we have to tell you or get rid of your computer and find something else to do. When you ask questions, we are going to do our best to answer them. We aren't going to outright lie to you. I also still fail to believe that your mother won't let you on the computer or listen to the radio or use the phone after a certain hour. I think it's an excuse you have made up, to keep from actually calling into the Internet radio program. You never said anything about your Mother's Rules, until people challenged you to call the Radio Racket show. Then you conveniently came up with the excuse that you can't use the phone or the computer after 10:00 on Friday night...coincidently that's the time the Radio Racket program airs live. I'm with Fred/Mike on this one.

You say that you can't afford to get Satellite radio. That's fine. I can understand that. It is quite an expense. As Fred/Mike said, people on this very board have offered to start a collection drive so you can have XM or Sirius...basically so you will quit bitching about how you can't hear certain games on the radio. But if we did get you an XM or Sirius radio, you would have nothing to complain about...that's why you won't accept our help. Same reason why you won't call into the Radio Racket program...because the panel would challege everything you say, as they should.

You only agree with one of my posts, about how Nassau can't do anything about WPHY's signal? You should agree with everything I say to you. But you won't, because it's the exact opposite of what you say. I don't care about WPHY. I don't listen to the station. I'm not going to do what you demanded, and complain to the FCC. Why don't you do it, instead of asking us to do it for you? You have a computer. You have e-mail. Use them, and send an e-mail to the FCC with your silly demands.

I won't call the show because I don't WANT TO. I should change but I haven't. I'm working to get my life fixed because It's been a hard 5-10 years for me. Maybe I should not be on the boards anymore. I'm very upset that I angered everyone. I should have never got into this posting and all this.

What Julius also fails to acknowldge is that WPHY-920 is heavily directional due to co-channel and adjacent channel stations it needs to protect. One of the co channels it protects is the 920 in Providence, WHJJ. Shawn O'Domski mentioned earlier in this thread about one of the stations I work at, WNWR, being a daytimer. They leave the air at sunset to protect KXEL Waterloo, IA, also on 1540. And yes, WVCH DID air Penn football for awhile.
