If the numbers are that bad, sounds like we need some adjustments.

I think the biggest problem(and I stated this in another topic) is their DJ Lineup. One guy is a holdover from the previous top 40 format(and white) and the rest of them are basically either a bunch of dumb white dudes or people whom just aren't street enough(ahum Keith Curry). As I have stated before, Hip Hop is a street format and your airstaff has to come correct. No two ways about it.

Secondly, the imagine likely ain't helping. Evansville's #1 Hit Music station? That's top 40 imagine! You need something like Where Hip Hop Lives, #1 for Hip Hop/R&B, Blazing Hip Hop and More, etc etc. It says exactly whom and what you are.

And am I hearing a bunch of crunk records? Crunk music does not work outside of the south, they need R&B and Hip Hop records from the west, east, and midwest, not dirty south.

I think they should get Big Boy's morning show and replace Van and Nikky, Nikky should go to Middays and we should upgrade Raj to Nights, Nikki and Raj are the two DJs that would understand the format. They really need a street feel(but no dirty south!)

If Evansville were STL or L'ville... You're thoughts would be correct.. But, to sell the term HIP-HOP to the major agencies would flop here.... They (106) always had the inside the building battle on imaging, as the sales force would get run out of businesses, no matter the size of the AQH and success.... Smaller city with a very small business base for 12 to 35 in an urban setting.. And another point.. Southern Indiana has more cultural ties to the Midsouth, than the Midwest... It goes back to the production lines during two eras... Turn of the century river traffic up from the south (wood mills, coal and production need and trade into the south) and the big one was WWII.... The influx of Kentucky workers to the war industry that stuck around after moving in, between 1942 and 1945..... You'll see almost as many UK banners in E'ville as IU or Purdue... I will even say (after working all over the country), Evansville is becoming more Midsouth and has moved to a more country leaning market, than when I was a kid... I may not like it, but that's the way the demo and psychographics go.... What did Bowie sing??? "Ch-Ch-Cha-Changes".... And I had a hard time posting a reply a day or so ago (computer was slow)... I was involved (from the side) on the 'almost' sell of 'UEV... The board is not pleased with a lack of increase in outside support as was promised, when every fan and inside staffer was saying 'don't sell'.... But, after almost two years, the outside support is not where they want it.. I hear soccer, basketball and baseball/softball... I've yet to hear volleyball.... Many smaller private schools with non-broadcast majors (Mass Comm is UE's closest) and FM's look at going 'stream' for all sporting events.... The Otters do not generate as much as most think.. But Mr. Bussing was kind to set the station up with great equipment and state of the art streaming.... Another major concern is the condition of the tower on top of the ad-building... Alot of older alums would love it off the building and think it takes away the character of the building... It's also in a valley and low terrain....The cost would be of concern to replace.. Best idea would find cheap or donated space of a certain tower or two with little on them in the county...Spacing is tight with Class "C" 91.3 at Murray State and "Thy Word's", WCVK's and WJPR's signals in Albion, Owensboro and Jasper at 91.7 ("A"'s)....
 
I wouldn't imagine spacing is so tight that UEV couldn't broadcast from the GBF-AM site on Morgan or 14 WFIE on St. Joe.

If the board wants rid of WUEV, they better get on with it, because the station is supposed to move into the new building on campus at the end of year.

I'm not sure I agree with your assessment of IU/Purdue/UK banners. We decided there were two IU affils and two PU affils in the metro, but I don't know of any station that carries UK sports ???
 
Folks...UE needs WUEV for sports coverage...plain and simple. I would like to see the Courier do a follow up story to see if anything is happenign with the station. It's ashame that the station is not being used as a training ground, as in years past. Too bad USI could not acquire the station and make it a part of their curriculum.

As far as UK "banner". A few years ago the local ISP did research and they found that there were more Kentucky promotional items (license plates, T-shirts, etc.) than IU and Purdue. As far as UK radio coverage, oen can stillpick up the games in the Evansville market. UK is just protecting stations on their Network...why would they need an Evansville station?

Anyway, don't know why this thread relating to EVV ratrings has devolved into the woes of WUEV since it isn't a factor. The big story remains the fact that Regent/Clear Channel/Connoseur, et. al., have never been able to use one of their pawn stations to erode WIKY's base. KDQ is dying on the vine with "personalities" like Sam Yates and now has to look in the rear view mirror at Wolf, which is a MUCH better sounding station. GBF is a dead stick after 10 am. Don't get me started on 47-yr-old Sandman trying to attract an audience half his age. And any station that keeps doing 'Thong Thursday' after, what, five years, is pretty lame. Kiss was doing great with Jeremy Thompson as PD, beating WSTO like a drum. But as usual when anyone with talent actually shows up at the Building of Death at Lincoln and 41 - they get shown the door. The sad thing is that the Regent folks really don't know how bad they are.

Where? I've never stumbled across a UK game on the dial, and I can't find an affiliates list anywhere.
 
Seriously, with all of the ownership changes at "The Building of Death", how has Sanders survived? Usually the PD's are one of the first to go with an ownership change. Just how has he survived...what 4 or 5 changes? Does the man work for like $50/week? ;)
 
Sanders was once fired by Larry Aiken, but since then has survived four ownership changes and outlasted about twelve GM's. They get a new GM at the Pukatorium every couple of years and are about due again. Maybe they'll take a hard look at who is responsible for years of excrutiatingly bad radio. Bring back Turner Watson and let the good times (and station vehicles) roll!
 
Actually you can hear UK easily in "Da River City" on WSON (at least during the day), WKTG-FM and round ball games only on WBKR (play by play only). I'm not sure how they pulled off play by play only. When I worked there it was better not to know any details on how they did business. You tend to sleep easier at night.

I forgot about Turner on GBF. Was there ever a break he did on GBF that didn't include the word "damn" or "hell"?

Your right about the revolving door of GM's at the "firetrap" located at 41 and Lincoln. Their current "grand poobah" is, in the eyes of Regent, the golden boy so he might move on soon to a cushy regional Vice Presidents in charge of something. I understand "Conan" is back with the company. If Mark Thomas leaves, maybe they'll bring him back to Evansville, "BABY!!!!!"
 
Where is Turner these days? He left CCRE for South Carolina, if I remember correctly.

I can't imagine "Conan" returning to 41 & Lincoln, but stranger things have happened I guess?

Apparently, Aiken knew a little more about what he was doing than people gave him credit for. Then again, I could be wrong!!
 
Turner is doing mornings at WBYR (98.9 The Bear) in Ft. Wayne. I've heard he's number one there. Easily the best jock GBF has had in it's 20 years.
 
I miss Jeremy T... When I was Warren's and Dan's backup at CC, he was great at positioning 106 for the long run... He asked my 'opine' and I told him to act like Tonya Harding and beat the ankles of 'then' the Hot AC/Adult CHR daytime style of 'STO with a 'ballbat' and bleed them from the ankles.... I said, he'd never beat them in the ADI, but he could make them pay in the four metro counties, which they did, at that time... Sales complained of the urban lean and they won out.... 106 has never been as hot on the metro meter, since then...

Outside support is not where they want it because the school hasn't kept up its end of the bargain. When the sale was nixed, President Jennings promised a blue-ribbon commission to look into changes at WUEV that would make it more viable on campus and in the community. What do we have today? Same old same old. I bought in to the first sales pitch, but my checkbook is now closed. If the board wants to find out why the outside support isn't there, perhaps they should look at the inside operations.

I remember the morning of 9/11 when you were running around the GBF newsroom in house shoes with cartoons on the tube. Hilarious. I came in yellin', "We're under attack!" Mayor Lloyd got a kick out of it. I miss your old days at WVJC. Kick ass station. It was during that time (1980) that Mike Sanders' grandmother called and begged me to get him a job at GBF because he was living in a mice-infested trailer in Mt Carmel. I did and he's been stabbin' me in the back ever since. Bad hire.

Rattle off your calls for me. Mine are: WGBF (twice), WTTS, WHKC, WSKZ, WWKX, WYHY, WRQX, WDJX, WYAV, WBDX, WTFM, WKDQ, WYNG (3 times), WRBT, WTRI, WABX, WGST, WKLS, WLW, WOFX, WEBN... and a few more I can't remember.

BTW, when is Regent moving to their new digs downtown? Judging by their pay scale, I guess they're moving there to be closer to the homeless shelter.
 
Geez??? Let's see??? Can I remember everywhere I took out the trash out, or ran a syndicated program (AT-40, Wolfman, The National Album Countdown???)

The first 'utterance' was doing weather for my uncle on KUKU in Willow Springs, MO back in the 60's (I was a kid and thought it would be cute when I was on the farm)....

High School class shows on WPSR and old 1400/WROZ...
Spin and Magnacord the sndycated stuff at 1280/WGBF (Crashed the 'cash cruiser', too)...
College work as the last jock shift on WEVC and then the first on WUEV (Gil Clardy did come in at midnight to give a drunken greeting and pronounce the new call letters! Great American-Irishman!)...
Then KGMO-AM/FM where the paychecks were rubber and Momma Ruth made Tim Roth and I cut (with a blade) down weeds around the signage...OOOOPS! That's cut down poison oak! And bury dead puppies, even though we told her about the grounding wires for the AM tower....I guess that dead null on I-55 just north of town was worth the space for the former K-9's???
WVJC and fun times in school at Wabash Valley...
WCIL-FM where I really finally started to sound halfway there and the lifestyle was the best a college age guy could ask for... Beers at 'The Cellar' (25 cents, each) with Kelly Carls and Mike Chylewski.. We were happy guys when tippsy!
KINT-98 in El Paso for a year (until they started losing money and Zippo was moving me around the clock like a pin-ball)...
KLID/KYMO in a year of reflection and rest while staying with the folks in Poplar Bluff... KLID was a little weird??? But KYMO was a flame-throwing AM with the most unusual format mix and success in a rural area (hot country sign-on to noon and hot Top-40 from noon to dusk)....Jam jingles and all...
Back to get another degree and work for Green Broadcasting for four years while doing the degree and grad work...WRTB was at 96.7 and moved to 106.5 and also did sports for the AM-WAOV in the Vincennes/Washington/Jasper area... Fun times and started ref-ing high school basketball (do it and soccer at the high school and college level, now)....Left to pioneer the Christian CHR format at Way-Fm in Fort Myers/Naples/Cape Coral market in '87.....Teen jock with them through a move into Nashville where I did fill and weekends, while building out Way-Nashville with then Oldies 96.3...While in Florida, began learning more engineering skills and have continued through to this day....Way-Nashville for four years...Served, while with those two Way stations (at different times): MD, Asst.PD, PD and PR/Promo Director (Florida), and PR/Promo Director, Building Project Coordinator, Asst. PD (Nashville)... Help build out about 7 or 8 translators while with Way... Then on to Columbus, OH for the buildout, staffing and GM gig at WUFM for two years.. Then the marriage brought me back to E'ville... OCU as Admissions, Soccer Coach and weekends at the former 93.5/WJPS (Oldies)... Then "CC" backup at Evansville (News-Sports)...Two years off from OCU with Cinergy Communications as the Manager of Media Partnerships and back to OCU as Assistant Athletic Director and Play-By-Play for them on TOC's WBTO....Built out two LPFM's as ENG and volunteer GM for one (WWPO here in OC and WYIR near Evansville where I do Castle Sports, too!)... ENG 1180 WGAB-AM in Newburgh and do fills and weekends between ballgame road trips for 104/WIKY in Evansville.... I also did several internships early on in radio (who cares?).... Oh, and some part time master control work at PBS 9/WNIN in Evansville...
What next??? I have two roads to choose from... Back to an old group to be involved in at top 25 market, or
stay put and do small town radio ownership.. I am spinning off with the former Father-In-Law a little 1Kw non-com in Western KY... Well??? That's the life of a 'could have been'.....better or worse.... Just be what we are to be... Happy..... ;D
 
I'm a little reticent to post on a board like this, but I wanted to thank those (that I don't know.. Skip, you don't count) who've posted positive things about WIKY. We were very happy to get the good Arbitron news and it is truly an example of a team victory. From the on air staff to the sales and support staff, everyone worked hard as we strengthen WIKY as Evansville's full service radio station. I can't take any credit for this win, it's the dedication of a great staff. Thanks to them and thanks to you again for all your kind comments.

Mark, these boards are more relevent in Evansville since the paper doesn't cover the results like they do everywhere else. No one outside of the business ever knows what's going on in regards to ratings. Its a shame because the only people who matter are the listeners and they are uninformed when it comes to the final results. Even people who participate in the ARB never find out what how their vote counted because of the media supression that started in the 80s during the WIKY-WYNG battles. The radio stations beat the paper to the punch on everything from local news to severe storms to personality and the Courier Press simply stopped covering other local media. They all fight for the same ad dollars, so that's what you get in a small market.

That said, South Central is a great place to work. It is the only place that any young person in this area with a desire to break into media should look to. It is the only company with a building full of mentors who can teach. An intern at Regent can look forward to handing out t-shirts out at the She Lounge on Valentine's Day be the highlight of their career. WIKY, ABX, WOLF and HOT deserve all kudos. The attitude there is great and it comes from the top. None of the PD's are maniacal oofs (ya get a lot of that elsewhere) and Tim lets them do their thing. J.D. and J.P. appreciate good radio and they know it when they hear it.

South Central also helped raise over $1 million in one day when the tornado hit two years ago. They had people on the air and on the scene when the storm hit. Regent had voice-tracking. Who ya gonna trust?
