Responding to BlueHen:

I like "Emotion" by Samantha Sang.

I like some ABBA and some Olivia Newton-John (though her "Make a Move on Me", added to Timeless Favorites when the change happened, should be sealed in a lead container and buried deep where it will never be found), a lot of Anne Murray and some Gordon Lightfoot and Dan Fogelberg. I guess I can live with England Dan and John Ford Coley. I find I'm much more accepting of their style when I listen to my country legends station.

I like Barry Manilow a lot, whether he's doing his old stuff or the new versions of the classics. Though I have to admit it's his style and not his voice. But when he sings real standards, the orchestras always sound great.

For me, Barry is ho-hum, but I guess I can't deny he belongs on the format. Celine, on the other hand, is annoying, along with others of that ilk, such as Faith Hill & Mariah Carey - whom I thankfully have not yet heard on the Dial Global format. I don't find their shrill caterwauling enjoyable to listen to at all. It's disruptive.

I can't say I know much about Timeless Classics, if anything, since I know of no affiliates. Is this the offshoot of what was Unforgettable Favorites about 5 years ago? I heard that for an hour once on a trip... every song except one was from the '70s. Needless to say, I wasn't too impressed.
I can't stand Faith Hill. Not so much her voice, but the irritating instrumentals that go along with the musical style. Mariah Carey, according to a newspaper article, was on my Stardust station when they programmed their music locally ten years ago. But I agree on both of them.

Your point about Top 40 radio in its heyday is well-taken. Listened to Dial Global again this morning. Heard "Axel F" Harold Faltermeyer, "You Don't Have To Be A Star" Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr, and "Break Up To Make Up" the Stylistics.
I like these, though "Axel F" clearly does not belong and needs to go.
