FAN PD LEAVING

The article today about CBS' new sports outlet in Atlanta says PD Terry Foxx is leaving KDKA-FM to take over there.

It will be interesting to see if that also results in some changes to the lineup here....

I wouldnt be surprised if they tweek the morning show a bit. Would love to see the fan bring on Colin Dunlap and Tab Douglas fulltime. The fan still hasnt replaced Jon Burton for evening updates.

Eric Hagman has been hired full-time for updates.

Foxx (Terry Floyd) didn't have that much to do with the lineup. Some guys were hired by CBS corporate and some (Cook) were Michael Young choices.

New PD must be more hands-on. Foxx didn't even attend remotes and station promotions.

More Tab Douglas? That's funny.

Tab Douglas is alright, at least he can hold an actual intelligent sports conversation that doesn't devolve into "yinzer" bashing and name calling (Dunlap, Mueller, Fillaponi)

Will be interesting to see if any changes at all occur. They haven't changed one thing since JB left mornings.
Any idea how the new CBS Sports Network will effect 93.7?
A CBS Radio exec was quoted in the Trib as saying there will be no changes to Pittsburgh 93.7

The original contracts are all up after the first of the year. There will be some changes.

When CBS starts the national feed, some of the programming will be must-carry. The Fan will lose some local shifts, especially on weekends.

Good move for the Fan. KQV never has been the same in terms of sports news coverage since Eric's departure there. He's a solid reporter and deserved another shot at full-time sports work in the market.

Hagman is very good. He is another one of those "news" "reporters" that need a 30 second opinion sound off bite.
Instead of interjecting his own personal snide comments into "news" items he can vent for 30 seconds everyday.
Works for Mike Tirico and Michael Wilbon.

Back to Terry Foxx, good to see the man is finally getting a promotion after all he did to take full control of the Pittsburgh sports market.

I don't get you, Boss. Why would you bash Tab Douglas, who I think is one of the more underappriciated talents in the market?

Douglas is pretty good for the reasons above and more. One of the great things I enjoy about him is that he goes back to the Terry Bradshaw era of Pittsburgh sports, but still is not worn out. Instead, he comes off as not only a professional, but a guy who wants to be in the radio studio (which is infectous to the listener), has knowledge without being overbearing, and is a quality listen.

Hagman is a great update guy. I'm not saying that to just throw the line "great." It is an appropriate modifier.

I, for one, appriciate how he can incorporate things like Pitt baseball into the updates without sacrificing more mainstream content.

I would hope that if there are changes, they're held to overnights and/or weekends. Other than the morning show, the only other time I really listen to the FAN is when Chris Mueller is on. Not a big fan (no pun intended) of Filipponi or Vinnie/Cook.

I can't see KDKA-FM taking too much "network" programming during the day, especially not if they plan on continuing to bill themselves as "Pittsburgh's local sports station". The last thing I want to hear in the mornings or afternoons are some out-of-town sports talk which has nothing to do with Steelers/Pirates/Penguins.

Not speaking for Boss but I can agree, to a point, with some of the Tab critics, he is not the most polished speaker (which imo is the only small quality Mueller has/had) and he stumbles sometimes with reads and remembering names, dates, places (he called Todd Haley as Dick Haley almost everytime this last weekend).
But his sports knowledge and insight, is on par with a Savran or Smizik. Also he is the only talent on 93.7 that gives them any credibility on hockey.

Regarding the "hometown sports station", well they are calling themselves "your home for Steelers training camp" but they spend 3.5 hours per show talking Pirates, so...

When they go to CBS Sports Radio Network, what happens to the news update guys? Colony, Hagman, Philips, Destio?

Well, if the Pirates would go back to sucking as they have in previous years, you wouldn't hear so much Pirates talk. Now, if KDKA/CBS ever pulled off a major coup in stealing the Steelers radio rights away from Smear Channel...

The way I was reading things, I thought CBS SRN would provide top of hour updates only, with Colony, Hagman, etc. doing the :20 and :40 updates and supplement the top of the hour updates.

It's been mentioned multiple times in the thread that the network stuff will be in the "off" hours -- late nights and weekends, when they can't sell local shows anyway.

They're doing fine with billing, and they're selling appearances by their staff. The formula works. Reduce the overhead by running network instead of local shows in non-prime slots and the bottom line gets even better.

CBS kicked off 98.7 the Fan in Tampa today, and the Fabulous Sports Babe is doing overnights. It would be a reasonable bet that she will become the national overnight show when that network kicks off in January.

If so, that would be a good place to start drawing listeners, at least for the curiosity factor in the beginning. It will be nice to have the Babe back on the air.

She's still doing radio? I thought she left the business after she left ESPN Radio/ESPN2 in the mid-1990s.

Not sure about that. She has a lot of history in Tampa locally that goes beyond her national adventures. But she's been in and out of the business (sometimes for serious health concerns) with some frequency. If I'm CBS, I'd be wary of going national with someone who is going to be perceived as an ESPN reject and someone who is pushing 60. For the type of exposure they'll be offering, they can do better. Create your own star instead of hiring another company's name from 15 years ago.

She's been working locally in the Tampa Bay area off and on since then.

The other hire they have made so far who will likely be part of the radio network is Doug Gottlieb from ESPN. So I'm not sure how "star" driven they want this to be. In the Babe's case, if overnights are the slot she ends up in, the mere fact that she has some name recognition is probably enough... she would be up against ESPN Sportscenter and JT the Brick on the other networks.... and CBS doesn't like to make stars as much as they like to hire credentials...

@CTrabs: In addition to what Parttimer says above, Babe had been off the air for awhile to fight cancer, but it sounds like she's back on radio's "active list". God bless her.
