The "xyl-" prefix is derived from "xylem," which in turn comes from the Greek "xylon" meaning "wood".
Xylem is the hard, fibrous plant tissue obtained when "phloem" (the soft, green tissue) dies and dries out, thus becoming wood and bark. In a vascular plant, the phloem carries water, and sugar to the other parts of the plant, whilst xylem carries water and secondary nutrients to the tree, supports the phloem and protects it from damage. If you strip a section of bark off a young tree trunk, you can often see a thin layer of phloem tissue underneath.
