Providence, Rhode Island is known to have good Italian food but I didn't find any on my one trip through Rhode Island a few years back.
The Mrs. and I were scouting colleges for two of our kids. After touring Brown in Providence for our daughter we headed toward the University of Rhode Island in Kingston for our son. Somewhere in between we stopped in a shopping plaza to grab lunch. My son and I saw a store front with a sign that read "Pizza Deli" out front so we headed in that direction. When we walked inside it looked nothing like the pizza places I frequented in NJ and NY. It was laid out more like a bakery with trays on the shelves of what looked to be Sicilian pizza behind the counter. When it came time to order, I politely said to the woman, "I'd like four slices please". She replied with, "you want what". "4 slices of pizza please" I said as I pointed to the trays behind her.,
"Oh, those are strips. Do you want red or white strips". "What's the difference", I ask? "Red strips have sauce, white strips don't". "Okay, 4 red strips to go please". My son and I got our order and headed to the car to eat. Let me tell you, I'm not sure what this faux pizza-like food was, but it definitely was not pizza. I've had frozen pizza that tasted better! Whatever, as bad as it was, I will say that it was better than the so-called pizza I got one time in Rochester, Minnesota. That's a story for another time.
