Favorite Classic Hits Station

Musically most of the CBS stations are very much the same. I'd break them down by dayparts, given that most sound the same. WLS-FM is clearly more of an oldies stations. I also agree there are those that lean Classic Rock, i.e., the COX Eagle formats and those that lean Pop... most of what we used to call oldies and CBS has most of those in the majors. To my ear...

1. AMDR KRTH or WLS-FM
2. Midday CBSFM or WOMC
3. PMDR KRTH or WRBQ
4. Nights... it's all Tom Kent all the time (I think he's pretty good actually)

my 2 cents

agree with you about the midday CBSFM (or ANY time at CBSFM...) but as for the nights thing...

i don't know - Tom Kent is one of those syndicated dudes and me? i like it LIVE and i like it LOCAL...

Totally agree LIVE and LOCAL, but given today's environment I like Kent... although Ron Parker, again CBSFM is very solid. Hey it's market 1, they should sound good.

Listen to Dick Biondi at nights on WLS-FM. He plays more 50s & 60s stuff than anyone else.

bgrn 198, i will have to try out your station of these days. i m also a registered member of live 365. i remember a classic rock hits station called 107.7 the hawk (around 1997-2000). that plays 60-80's.

I absolutely agree with John about there being two kinds of classic hits formats these days. Well-said!

Oldies/Classic Hits: WLS-FM

Classic Hits: WCBS-FM

As a lover of oldies/classic hits here in Phoenix, I've been impressed by both (and both stations are like a breath of fresh air these days). Oh how things change...
Three. I don't know what the largest market is with the third kind, but Atlanta has 97.1 the River. Raleigh, NC, has WRVA-FM (also The River). These are stations that just play classic rock, though their definition of rock is different from "classic rock" radio.

Edit: I read some other posts that count this type of station as a separate style. One of the best is in Charlotte.

Unless they've changed The River in Atlanta is Classic Hits not Classic Rock... at least if they still drop in the Jim Croce or other pop things amongst all the rock leaning hits. That format is used at the Eagle in Jacksonville and Tampa and recently was cloned for Houston. To my ear they were all the same but I honestly haven't listened to them in more than a year. Admittedly they lean on the rock stuff but the pop they play puts them between classic rock and oldies, hence classic hits... if you made a histogram from oldies to classic rock...

Cruzin am 950 Denver... WLS FM Chicago... CBS FM (most other CBS CHs),... COX CHs (Eagle, River)... and ya now what, I'm hard pressed to think of a real classic ROCK station these days... maybe the Fox in Denver?

Just my opinion

I should give WLS and CBS a shot. I do enjoy KONO 101.1 in San Antonio. They are the only station I will listen to when I visit SA. Sounds more like an MOR then a rock or R&B heavy classic hits format. A nice blend of rock, R&B, disco and pop from 64-79. They even throw in some country crossovers too. I stream the station a lot here in Houston since KGLK 107.5 turned into a 70s-80s rock format (whose format overlaps sister station 80s rock KHPT 106.9)

When you give WLS a listen if you're looking for 50s & 60s music try Dick Biondi (7--11PM CDT). Otherwise the rest of the schedule is more tilted towards 70s & early 80s.

Jim Croce is rock to me. I did say their defintion is different from that of stations called "classic rock".
