Favorite triangle radio host ever?

Hello all,
I was hoping to maybe start a good topic on the boards.
The question is who is your favorite Triangle radio host ever?
For me it is the late Dale Van Horne.
I always loved hearing him when he was on radio. Who could forget his voice.

I remember listening to Famous Bob Inskeep! He was great! It is because of him that I wanted to get into the biz!!

He worked for WPTF right?

Actually, when I listened, he worked at WRAL...1979ish.

Me? Office? Like George Clooney said "too many skeletons".

I worked with many of the folks I mentioned. Can't single one out.

How bout 3, one from each "point":
Raleigh - Gary Dixon (and the morning Zoo) - (94Z)
Durham - Mark Mitchell (G105)
Chapel Hill - Ron Stutts (WCHL)

TACK - WRAL-FM

Sorry for killing the name here but whatever happened to John Van Pelt? I rememeber him in the 80's and enjoyed his shows on 93.9 and 105.1, listening from the Triad area. Our metro didn't seem to have anyone that approached the energy he brought to the stage.

He's actually a storm chaser now...No joke.

Do you know how to get hold of him? I worked with John at G-105 back in the early '80s.

Try Wlfl TV...he used to do voicework for that
station.

All the submissions so far are great. My fave was WQDR/WRDU's Bob Walton.

You can't leave out Jay Butler (who did mornings at WQDR for
18 years). He's now on the new Capitol Broadcasting station
in Raleigh. All Access announced it this afternoon.

Bob Walton....hands down.

Don't get me wrong...Dale Van Horn hade a HUGE following, and did a great job despite being blind (many people never knew)...but he still was a hold-over from the "boss jock" mentality. It's the people who came on with their own voice and own identity that made the grade.

If I have to pick just one, I have to go with Patterson. If you go back and look at ratings during the last 40 years, there would be little doubt that Pat Patterson was the greatest of all time in Raleigh radio. His stint at WKIX was nothing short of legendary. He had some great people working with him (both on and off the air). The station had a phenomenal success in that era - a record that is not likely to be repeated by today's crop of stations. I don't think Pat translated well to FM - his stint at WQDR and later at WYYD/WYLT were not nearly as successful as the day at 85-W-K-I-X! (What a shame they didn't do 96-KIX with that FM!)

Honorable mentions go to:

Bob Inskeep - WRAL - FBI's first few years at WRAL were pretty incredible. Station was fully automated and was used to distribute the North Carolina News Network. That meant hard timing to the network programs. As a result, there was the need to use dead roll fill music. Bob used those for his best bits - his timing was amazing. He also was the only voice on the station. I remember hearing him doing the community calendar at 3AM on Sunday. He was WRAL in those days. I always though being on WPTF ruined him for music radio - he rambled too much!

Dale Van Horn - WKIX - while his on-air persona was good, he was a wizzard in the production room. Those who knew Dale have to wonder what he would turn out with today's digital tools. Give him a four-track reel to reel and a handfull of carts - and sit back and marvel!

I count Dale as one of my closest friends, well more like a father figure. I met him when I was in the 10th grade at Governor Morehead School. He came to speak for our graduation.. As someone who loves radio and dreams of working in radio I knew I wanted to find him after the speech. This was back in the late 90s when Dale had returned to Raleigh. After the speech I had a chance to meet him and we exchanged numbers. For the Next few years we talked almost every week we talked for hours about everything not just radio. I spoke to him for the last time just days before he died in 2001.

Dale was a great speaker - and made a nice addition to his radio life traveling and doing his speach about the people who made a difference in his life. He was pretty amazing in that setting - would sit at the piano, play and sing "what a difference you made in my life ..." then tell the story of his father, who gave up his successful contracting business to move the family to Raleigh so Dale could go to the Governor Morehead school. Then sing a little more and tell about someone else who touched his life.

Dale's ultimate message was to take the time and make a difference in someone's life.

I worked with DVH for about ten years. Like all of us, he had his faults, but I always counted him among my best friends. His biggest fault was putting mustard on french fries at Old Time Hotdogs on Hillsborough street!
