FCC Commissioner Calls To Ban TikTok

Senators and members of the House frequently do "fact finding" trips to visit both allies and adversaries. That has been the custom for longer than I have been alive.
It was a "fact finding mission" for the Russians, too. You can bet they had the whole place bugged and were recording everything that the Republican senators were whispering to each other while the Russian officials were out of the room.

Tik tok accused of data tracking journalists. Yes this is the same tactic Twitter was accused of doing when a staff member was convicted of Data Breach.

Heard something on the radio into work this morning, that the latest political bloviation consists of 'forcing' TikTok to sell to a U.S. company. Since the public Internet is an international resource, I'm unclear how a single country could force a foreign entity to sell their business.

I get it, the threat amounts to; 'either do our bidding or we will ban you'. But in reality blocking any website within the states involve telling every ISP in the country to block (in this case) TikTok from their customers. To my knowledge that hasn't been done before, and is fraught with unpleasant byproducts.

Here we go again. The previous president signed an executive order requiring TikTok to be sold to a US company. There is no basis for such a requirement, and TikTok fought the order in court. Here is the latest story on the subject:

In the meantime, Elon Musk has access to everyone's personal data at Twitter, and he could do whatever he wants with it.

Facts: We are not at war with China. The US does a lot of business with China. China owns $3 trillion in US debt.

An easy way to solve this problem internally is for parents to tell their kids not to use TikTok. Good luck!

I personally own a TCL TV. TCL is a Chinese company that makes TV sets. Not illegal in this country.

And never mind that Tesla records your conversation in their Model 3 and Model Y, or even what you listen to on the drive, then sells that data to third parties.

Same could be said for every TV, radio, PC and laptop being made today. Samsung and LG are Korean companies, but almost all the components, and most of the assembly, is done in China.

Note Wisconsin and North Carolina are banning Tik Tok from state issued devices in this update.

the state of alaska has banned tik tok on state owned devices and networks

Here are all the apps the Parent company of Tik Tok owns as of 2023. Note Some of these apps don't get international attention that Douyin and Tik Tok gets on average. In other words Bytedance is fighting for position to be the biggest tech platform against Meta Inc (owns Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Whats App) and Alphabet gets (Google, BlogSpot, Youtube, Google sites, Gmail)

HONG KONG (AP) — The U.S. and Canada issued orders this week banning the use of TikTok on government-issued mobile devices as privacy and cybersecurity concerns about the video-sharing app grow.
TikTok, which is owned by the Chinese company Bytedance, has long maintained that it does not share data with the Chinese government and that its data is not held in China. It also disputes accusations that it collects more user data than other social media companies, and insists that it is run independently by its own management.

BRUSSELS, Feb 28 (Reuters) - The European Parliament has banned TikTok from staff phones, following in the footsteps of two top European Union policymaking institutions and underlining the mounting unease over the Chinese short video-sharing app and who accesses its user data.

The European Commission and the EU Council last week banned TikTok from staff phones due to growing concerns about the company, which is owned by Chinese firm ByteDance, and whether China's government could harvest users' data or advance its interests.

Update EU, United States and Canada have banned Tik Tok from their respective Government owned devices so far.

Note this article also includes India, Pakistan, Taiwan and Afghanistan for banning Tik Tok at one point or another.

Gov. Bill Lee indicates he will sign a bill banning Tik-Tok from all state university campuses. Interestingly enough, the university systems all have Tik-Tok accounts (likely more than one). So how do you get around a Tik-tok ban if you're a student? Use your own data and not the campus wi-fi.

Doesn't our own government track our data? That is ok with the FCC?
Good Point and we saw the same stuff with Meta back when they were called Facebook Inc.

Here is more in this case with Utah.

Utah lawmakers this week passed a package of bills that would prohibit social-media companies from allowing minors under 18 to have accounts, without parental permission, and would ban the companies from serving any ads to minors.

In addition to those restrictions, the Social Media Regulation Act (SB 152) would require social media companies to verify all current and prospective users' ages, and would force social media companies to allow parents to access all content and interactions of their underage children's accounts.

A companion bill (HB 311) would prohibit social media companies from designing their services in a way that “causes a minor to have an addiction to the company's social media platform.”

Here is more on the Tik Tok restrictions bill that is in the Senate.

So now the Biden administration is calling for TikTok to be sold:

This is basically where TikTok was three years ago under Trump. At that time there were discussions with several potential buyers.
It's one of these things on one hand you can't ban Tik Tok because the core demos are there. But on the other hand Tik Tok's parent company does the same tactics as Meta does for Instagram and Facebook only in this case it's China because of where the company is based.

Update New Zealand and United Kingdom joins the United States, EU and Canada to ban Tik Tok on government issued devices.

In the unlikely event a TikTok ban happened, and was upheld in court, their creators will migrate to Instagram and YouTube shorts, benefitting Alphabet and Google.

Here is the list so far.

Australia to consider banning Tik Tok on Government issued devices.
