FCC shut down pirates in Boston ?

Don't worry, your beloved pirates are likely in no danger. It looks like these latest actions are for the fairly new 99.7. All of the other big pirates have been given NOUOs, and some have gotten NALs "ordering" them to pay $10,000.

And you know something? These idiots consider any fine or whatever just to be "the cost of doing business". They can make up that $10,000 debt by selling spots on their stations. "Even Steven" as they say. More than likely, they will never pay the fine. And with the amount of boots increasing every day, good luck trying to turn them off. If they do, another boot will take its' place or simply move to another part of town. I like what Florida does to these idiots. Shut-'em down and take the equipment and associated items "of interest" and put them in jail. End of story.

As I've said before, WCRB 99.5 can't be happy with the 99.7 in Mattapan. Take the equipment and put them in jail? Sounds fine to me. While I usually am for less government I'm also for law and order and these guys need to
stop. Or else why do we need an FCC? Sure, get rid of 'em; let us say whatever the heck we want on air...
let pirate stations set up right next to legit ones...forget about public service requirements...increase power...
who cares about the law. Tolerate pirates and the next thing you know we should tolerate other lawbreakers.

"Excuse me, FCC...you want to fine my station for profanity over the air? Why? You are letting other stations go on air without licenses. How come they can do what they want and I can't?"

This is not the FCC's fault. At a field level you don't think they wouldn't love to shut these operations down? The problem is much higher up and it's called politics. Their commissioners are put in place by politicians. At at this moment in history It's not politically popular to cart off pirates and their equipment. So due to that the system for removing them is very slow bureaucratic procedure that is designed to ruin them monetarily. Though they have trouble collecting from them quickly these federal fines are very real. They will hang over these individuals heads for a lifetime. There will be eventually charges of failing to pay federal fines which can result in property being sieved. Not transmitters but houses. Yes it's slow and there will be appeals but this is really the only power the agents can use nowadays because they get no other support from other agencies or government officials. Heck congress is trying to increase LP licenses and spectrum. The one good thing is these folks are at least all disqualified by their current status if this ever comes to be.

Florida has a state law that allows them to put people in jail. The last one that was arrested was selling weed and passing gang information. Prisons are over crowded now and they are releasing violent criminals early because of budget cuts and they are going to fill the prisons with people that operate pirate radio stations? Come on Peter.

If you look at the stations that were actually busted, it looks like except for one, they were directly interfering with licensed stations.

theyd love to crawl around on rooftops in Mattapan cutting down aerials that are gonna be back up the next day and face a 50/50 chance of getting shot/knifed for looking like a shady trespasser? doubtful

At the end of the mayoral debate on WTKK last week, Touch 106 was thanked, then WTKK in that order...

Thanked by whom?

Another episode of Menino being clueless. Does he even know that's a pirate station?

More importantly, do his opponents know?

Touch 106 was thanked by a woman, possibly Callie Crossley of WGBH-TV's Beat the Press (Greater Boston). She was just about to re-introduce the debate moderator, Charles Ogletree, and mentioned Touch 106 and
WTKK in that order.

from the podcast:
"thank you to our many sponsors, the Metro, the Bay State Banner, Univision, Touch 106.1 FM,
WTKK 96.9 FM..."

In all seriousness, outside of us "radio geeks" (I say that lovingly!), do you really think 99% of the rest of the listening population know the difference between a pirate and a legit radio station? All they know is that they can hear it on their radio. Chances are she was probably reading from some script, written by someone else who doesn't know that Touch is an illegal operation.

You would think at least someone involved in the production of the debate would have noticed the error. Did no one go over the script before the debate?

You would think that someone who works for a licensed radio or TV station would know about which stations are pirates.
In the past, the mayors of some towns with pirate stations have supported the pirate station.

Sure, maybe an engineer, but an engineer wouldn't be involved in the planning of a debate. Furthermore, I doubt the average PD/GM knows what's going on around them on the dial other than their true competition. Heck, come to think of it...this debate was probably organized by some local civic group and simply had the radio station "support" and suffice it to say, the radio station (WTKK I believe) wasn't really involved in the planning other than "Where do we plug in to tap the audio?" Not picking on 'TKK, just the nature of the beast I guess.

Politicians aren't clueless at all. They know where the audience is and they are supporting the community. A vote is a vote.

That's true, but I still doubt that Menino, or Governor Patrick who has appeared on "Touch" 106.1, know that the stations are illegal unlicensed broadcasters, or that they know anything about FCC regulations and licensing in general.

I think it's more that the question never really enters their minds. When you go into a restaurant, do you think to ask the waiter for proof that the restaurant is licensed with the state and has all the proper paperwork for minimum wage, workman's comp, etc?

Hell, I talk with listeners all the time who tell me their favorite show in the world is on WEOS and it's such-and-such show...and in my mind I'm thinking "we haven't aired that show in ten years, and neither has anyone else around here". Outside of the tight community of radio geeks (a badge I wear with pride) most people have no idea about how things work in the radio biz, and they don't want to know, either. It boils down to: "Do I like what I hear? Yes? Leave radio tuned to station. No? Switch stations until I do."
