Did KTweetAR benefit from the return of Da Noon Noose and going to Da Source? You be da judge ;)

Looks like it, Doc! The steady progression of KTAR's numbers is also coinciding with the steady decline of KFYI's… Coincidence?

Plus, it looks like the addition of alternative rock tracks and the shying away from '80s hair metal has caused quite the jump for "Still Arizona's Original Rock Station," KDKB.

KTAR-FM's 4.1 in 25-54 is its highest since last summer. It is 6th in the demo, to KFYI's 2.6 and 17th rank showing.

KDKB is at the same level and rank in 25-54 as it was in July / August of last year.

Anyone notice less local news on KFYI lately?

I've noticed less Barry Young...Barry Markson does such a better show than TNBO, actual intellect!

OK it's time for KAJM to add in currents. KOYT is winning the race now. I think there best route is to become R&B current hits & oldies station; this win over most black listeners between the two stations and this may cause their rating to go up as those listeners drop KYOT(just a thought). KNRJ, their child station has now overtaken their ratings status. KNRJ was old school hiphop at a .8 share, and went to 1.5 share after adding in currents. Eitherway, time to change to something new..

Please stop this argument. We've had it a million times on this board. Arbitron counts about 155,000 Black people in the valley over the age of 18. Comparatively there are an estimated 750,000 Hispanics in the market over 18. Also I think you paint the Black population with an absurdly big brush to say they would all listen to an Urban AC with currents 24/7. I would argue there would be plenty of fragmentation between Hip Hop, Top 40, AC and Talk formats as well as whatever Mega may throw out there. The Black population in Phoenix IS NOT BIG ENOUGH TO BE A VIABLE NICHE FOR BROADCASTERS. Unless there is some major demographic shift in the near future, it won't be for quite some time.

The 2nd and 3rd generation, English speaking Hispanic population is where Mega needs to target...and they are doing just fine in that demo.

Put another way, the market is 5.2% African American and 30.5% Hispanic.

LA, which is almost 8% African American, can't sustain a full signal urban station... Phoenix definitely could not sustain an Urban AC station.

I think my main point is being loss. Currently, KYOT is TAKING KAJM's market share. Blacks have been growing here in the valley more than some may think. I am a native Phoenician and i know our community has probably doubled in the last ten years. I know we still don't make up a large census percentage in Phoenix. However, with TWO old school stations in the valley, and KAJM losing the battle, I know blacks would support the station that played currents WITH the old school. With blacks flocking to a station playing currents may make the difference that KAJM needs a change now, or flip it to alternative like Salad dressing said. Either way, the valley really can't support two old school stations neither. You may be wrong to say something that didn't work in 2001/2002 can't work in 2013....but just my opinion, not to agitate. :D

Also, by pointing out the demo's is what radio has been doing as long as I have been alive. I agree, I can't say that all blacks would support an urban AC anymore than anyone else could say that hispanics or whites won't. ;)

I think what i hear from friends who mostly don't listen to radio anymore is that they want a little more variety or else the IPOD continues to be king.

Clear Channel bungled the launch of "Old School 95.5" (I'm not going to call it "Eva"). It is an awful station all around, and the ratings show they could do better. That's one of the reasons why Mega is still there. I'm sure if 104.3 had the promotions budget, they could improve their ratings.

In all fairness, it is understood there aren't a huge number of African-Americans in Phoenix, but does that mean they cannot get what they want on the air? Has KYOT or KAJM thought about dayparting current Urban AC music or maybe even having a specialty show which plays current Urban AC cuts? Maybe if it was executed in this matter, it would satisfy those who want to hear newer music and not alienate the core listeners. If this formula were taken on gradually, it would possibly work.

Good point hamp, at least give it a try.

The currents that they tried back in 2006 weren't really currents. It was 9 oldies and 1 so-called current(3 or 4 years old) played every hour. I'm talking about a real current WBLS/KBLX style.

ON another note the black population in San Fran makes up about 6.0%, but KBLX which plays currents and oldies is doing pretty good. Why??? can anyone explain that west coast demo....If it don't work then fire me...LOL ::)

Some yes and some No. We were playing even Usher Yeah or PCD Don't Cha only after 6-9 months after being on the charts. Top 40, perhaps but True Urban is not exactly familiar

Not familiar in phoenix because of NO AIRPLAY.....I think that it is possible to change with airplay, that's how the old school R&B got popular back in the day. It was played on the radio; thank God that's not the only medium these days. I remember KUKQ playing R&B when black demo's were waaaaaaaaaay low. The hits could be made with today's R&B if marketed....Besides its the same music, with the same beat old school or new school...some like not to see the music die. 8)

I'm with ya XM, but keep in mind that even KUKQ started adding titles like Expose, Bananarama, Nu Shooz, Regina, and even Phil Collins (yes Susudio was played on 1060). Not exacty Black titles, but like Beau pointed out, they work in AZ (being very Hispanic populated) and they were competing with KZZPs freestyle flavored Pop lean.

I remember it playing mostly black music back then, with a few freestyles. I remember they were even somewhat experimental with Art of noise and playing RUN DMC " It's like that " well before other station would even touch rap. I don't think KZZP sounded anything like them. KZZP wouldn't play ZAP, Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack. KZZp was very pop friendly and at that time pop was a rock-lean. Only thing place I remember KZZP going rythmic was during their friday & saturday night mixes at that time( the 80's). They became more rythmic during the early 90's.
