They became more rythmic during the early 90's.

Actually 104.7 flipped to KVRY in 91. So Their Rhythmic Era was late 80s. They played CCCP, Freestyle Express, Trinere, Cover Girls, Afro Rican, Samantha Fox, Sir MixALot and so on. I realize this was after KUKQ, but very edgy for a CHR where other markets wouldn't touch

Black population isn't large enough according to Arbitron to support a pure Urban AC. L.A. has similar pop count and KJLH loses Black to KHHT, Power 106, and sometimes even the Wave.

the Black demo in Phx is a little older than the national average it looks like too.

Las Vegas has one Urban station - I think it is non profit

kfyi seems to be going downhill with the political talk in a non election year ..I hear angry callers to Young's fill-in host...I think he is too left for the Barry Young demo

San Francisco has a smaller black population percentage 6.5 but kblx Is doing good.Phoenix has TWO old school r&b stations. Other races like r&b and kjlh in LA has a terrible signal.How about an urban ac with a good signal in Phoenix?

I will add my two cents, since I was at KZZP at the time.

1985-86 Straight pop, Janet Jackson, Mister Mr, Heart, Cameo(word up), Bangles, etc....
1987-became a little more rhythmic, pebbles, keith sweat, roger (I want to be your man)
Mid 1988-Hair Bands Reign Supreme, Def Lepard, GNR, Cinderella
Mid 1989-Back to straight pop-Milli Vanilli, Paula Abdul, Edie Brickel and the New Bohemians, Tracey chapman, B-52's
1990-It really didn't matter at this point....but Adam Ant, Phil Collins, Wilson Phillips, .....then death

Ok one last tid-bit...lol

The black population in 1986 averaged about 5% of the phoenix population. KUKQ at that time had a cumm of 2.9 For that time they played what would be considered CURRENT urban ac/urban contemporay music. They managed that cumm without a large black population. Currently, Phoenix has about a 6.5% black population and i'm being told the format is not viable because there is not enough black here......ummmm there was less population in 1986, but the station still performed with a solid middle cumm on an AM signal...yes AM.LOL

I guess that makes sense, urban was a different urban with the dance friendly at that time, but it did sound more in line with other urban's in other markets. Music titles these days are getting more confusion. Ex: There is a Jazz festival coming to town at the Wigwam later this month. They call it Jazz, but the MOST of the acts they have are R&B/Neo-soul music. See below:

2013 Lineup
:: Friday, April 12 ::
Jill Scott ----R&B
Will Downing ----R&B

:: Saturday, April 13 ::
The Isley Brothers -----R&B
Jeffrey Osborne & Euge Groove ----Jazz
Mindi Abair, Peter White & David Pack --- Jazz
Larry Graham &
Graham Central Station -------Jazz
Lalah Hathaway & Rahsaan Patterson ---R&B
Elan Trotman

:: Sunday, April 14 ::
Anthony Hamilton ----R&B
India.arie ----R&B
David Sanborn -----Jazz
Angie Stone -------R&B
Nick Colionne ------Jazz
Andre Delano, Jeanette Harris
& Phil Den -------Jazz
