Arbitron is a scam. It's a joke. It's not an accurate representation of who's listening. It's a fraud, and it's all about who's got the money. I understand how PPM works, and from what I've seen firsthand, I think the numbers are total crap.
The reality is, not that many people listen to terrestrial radio anymore... at least not as many people as they want you to think. Oh, and the people who do listen, aren't listening to the stations that Arbitron would like you to believe. I think it's very telling when you look at the top rated stations' facebook fan pages, and they have 100 likes... meanwhile some of the bottom rated stations have fan pages with thousands of likes... BTW check Thunder's fan page, they've been plugging it on the breaks for several weeks now, and they're barely cracking 100 likes...
I have a couple friends over at WFHS who've told me they have trouble getting the phone to ring for contests. Meanwhile, over at WTAN, our night time signal doesn't make it past Pinellas Park, and we've got calls coming in all night... Again... Arbitron is a joke. I do believe that the Eagle is one of the most popular stations in the area, judging from the fact that every restaurant, doctors office, and retail store is playing their bland crap. But beyond that, I think the numbers are skewed to favor the "big 3" while squelching the actual popularity of some of the smaller stations. I can't be BS'd I've worked up and down the dial... I've answered the phones at stations that supposedly have a 0.0 share... to hell with Arbitron.
