February Ratings

US103.5 highest numbers ever... Whatever happened to the powerhouse that was QYK?

And while the Fan's numbers don't look like they're growing, DAE is declining. That probably means people are finding the Fan.

And 97x went UP with the stupid robo-format.

i cant believe 97x went UP if thats the case. although i noticed its a quasi-robot now, at least a real person is doing the song intros. the real person gets a whole 5 or 7 seconds.

I usually listen to Q105, WDUV, and WWRM. Q105 sounds the same to me after the alleged freshing of the musuc and I think both Cox stations seem to be sounding older. Hearing more Manilow, Streisand, and Diamond on the Dove. Could any of this affect the numbers? Seems that WMTX is staying stable which I hope means that it wont flip. So much for the old lady stations. Glad to see WSMR catching up to 98.7 in their epic battle.

If 97X is robotic/automated, no one told Joel, Danielle, Nikki, or Erica....

In the end, the only things that changed at WSUN were no more morning show (not unusual these days), and the playlist (widened, and listener influenced via the app). The announcers...err..."music guides" are still there giving away concert tickets, involving listeners in contests, talking about the music, etc. No voice-tracking, satellite delivery, or location shifting (except Danielle doing her shift from Ireland on a recent Jameson-sponsored trip). Very much "live and local". They may actually be more "human" than before the tweak. There's certainly more emphasis on listener involvement, and it seems to have helped the numbers (up a half share from their last full book before the change).

The app thing has also given them another revenue stream (launch it on your phone/tablet, and you are also greeted with a banner ad), and drives listeners to the web stream (as an end-around to their meager signal). In the end, not a bad idea.

Elsewhere at Cox, Eagle is down a pinch (Thunder related?), WHPT is up (no doubt thanks partly to the Bubba/MJ saga).

'FLZ won this months CHR battle, WXTB and MIX seem safe for now, and The Beat is up. Not sure where the whole translator Thunder or "FLA on FM" thing is going. I'd expect the latter to happen eventually, though, displacing WXTB, Beat, or Mix. Launching a rock format on the translators may be a clue. Otherwise ???

Ok, I'm going to say this one more time. I thought this was already generally accepted among those in the know, but I'm sure some folks are going to tell me I'm full of crap......

Arbitron is a scam. It's a joke. It's not an accurate representation of who's listening. It's a fraud, and it's all about who's got the money. I understand how PPM works, and from what I've seen firsthand, I think the numbers are total crap.

The reality is, not that many people listen to terrestrial radio anymore... at least not as many people as they want you to think. Oh, and the people who do listen, aren't listening to the stations that Arbitron would like you to believe. I think it's very telling when you look at the top rated stations' facebook fan pages, and they have 100 likes... meanwhile some of the bottom rated stations have fan pages with thousands of likes... BTW check Thunder's fan page, they've been plugging it on the breaks for several weeks now, and they're barely cracking 100 likes...

I have a couple friends over at WFHS who've told me they have trouble getting the phone to ring for contests. Meanwhile, over at WTAN, our night time signal doesn't make it past Pinellas Park, and we've got calls coming in all night... Again... Arbitron is a joke. I do believe that the Eagle is one of the most popular stations in the area, judging from the fact that every restaurant, doctors office, and retail store is playing their bland crap. But beyond that, I think the numbers are skewed to favor the "big 3" while squelching the actual popularity of some of the smaller stations. I can't be BS'd I've worked up and down the dial... I've answered the phones at stations that supposedly have a 0.0 share... to hell with Arbitron.

Small town radio stations in non-rated markets make their sales just based on the amount of traffic they get through the door and/or how well the local high school teams are doing. A lot of stations in smaller markets are kissing off the ratings services because they can show their clients results, which would mean a lot more as an advertiser than a book of numbers generated by suspect methodology.

Of course, the problem is that Arbitron is the only game in town and even though it's a rigged game there's just no way to avoid playing with them, unless you want to go totally off the grid like WTAN.

For what it's worth, I think 97x has been pretty good lately. I like their playlists more now.

I honestly could not care less about how the music gets played. I listen to FM for music and AM for talk.

That's just me, though.

Phones and Facebook "likes" are largely generated by people with no lives. Certain stations attract those people.

People with jobs and money don't have nearly as much time for that stuff. So despite what you think from answering the phones at Dave and Lola's broadcast empire, it's not an accurate barometer at all.

Is Arbitron accurate, no not as good as they should be for the money, but if the ratings say no one listens to a station they're usually right.
