its sad that the people listening don't care Cry groupie? I hate being called that, I think we should be called friends of the station!! Its like a Family, groupies is not a nice word.

I've got news for you. There is no radio family. They could care less about you. It's just a business. It just so happens that at this point in history, radio is a nongrowth industry/dieing industry. Radio is just not that important anymore with all the other media and internet choices. There was a time when radio could translate spending lots of money on djs, promotions, contests and jingles and make money doing it. This is what WABC was in the mid 60s. Because radio is a nongrowth/dieing industry, radio companies avoid spending any money. WCBS-FM serves a purpose by spending nothing and giving listeners the
minimum. They can get away with it because most listeners like you would rather have this than nothing. Just about everything that was good about this format has been removed, 50s and 60s music, decent audio processing, real personality djs, contests and various other things. Why do you think Harry Harrison quit? He saw the cheapness coming. They even screw the djs by keeping many of them part time to avoid paying benefits. WCBS-FM is like the Hawaiian Punch of radio versus the height of WABC. (10% natural fruit juice)

....decent audio processing....

Are you $%^&*ing deaf? CBS-FM has the BEST audio processing in NYC, if not the tri-state. Your other points I can take or leave, but their audio is as clean as a hounds tooth, and as loud to boot.

CBS-FM still has Ziggy as the V/O guy, still has JAM jingles, and will throw in late 50's/early 60's evergreen cuts as an "oh wow" every so often in rotation (usually moreso on weekends). Hell...Shannon played Darrell Banks "Open the Door to Your Heart" a few months ago - what other station would let a jock do that?

Is it the station that plays "oldies" music? No...but then again, Whitney Houston is now considered "oldies"! You want 55-63 songs? Go online. I did...hell, I created my own station and stream it!

You said it yourself. Radio is a business...and CBS-FM is in the business of making money. That means not focusing on pre-Beatles songs.

Now go get your #$%^&ing shinebox.

:) ok maybe the business do not care, but I think the personalities care about the friends as you called them groupies. I been to stuff the personalities do, and they have to work but they also spend time talking to you as a friend not just a DJ. Harry was a DJ and a Friend to me. The guys today and Ladies on wcbsfm are to me Friends not just a voice on the air. Like everything else, radio has changed but I see the love the DJ's have for their listeners :) I think the personalities are sad that radio has done that to them too. I am just glad the short time I will have with them, will be Happy times!! :)

Just because it might be the best audio processing in New York, doesn't make it great audio processing. I've heard better processing on the internet. If CBS-FM had the talent, they wouldn't need a voiceover guy. Dan Ingram did most of it at WABC. The few 55-63 songs that are played are just throwing a bone to a desperate audience who have no other radio choices. They give the illusion that they care.

If you regularly call djs on the phone, you might be a groupie.
If you go to a djs personal appearance, you might be a groupie.
If you talk to the djs at a personal appearance, you might be a groupie.
If you think the djs actually care about you, you are definitely a groupie.

Fact of the matter is radio is suffering right now but CBS-FM has good numbers. There will always be haters (RT) who never have anything good to say about a station. Give me a break! Radio today is different than the good old days.. get over it.. move on. It's all about the numbers and the fact that you're bad mouthing CBS-FM tells me you listen. So from the CBS-FM crew.. Thanks for your support RADIO TRUTH!

Fixed for truth:

If you regularly call djs on the phone, you are a fan of the station or show the jock is hosting.
If you go to a djs personal appearance, you might be a groupie, or might want to get free swag.
If you talk to the djs at a personal appearance, you might be a groupie, or a person that doesn't have aspergers and is sociable.
If you think the djs actually care about you, you are most likely right. DJ's realize that without an audience, we got nothing. Unless the DJ is a jackass, then they might not care.

The people that take the time to write, send cards/letters, and other nice things to me are listeners that I cherish and are what make the crappy pay and long commute worth it. It is because of THEM that I do what I do. Any jock who forgets that needs to check him or herself and remember...it ain't about only them!

Dude...how badly did you get burnt working in radio? You are more bitter than Passover maror, and seem to think that all radio is crap. Did Dan Mason run over your dog or something?

Real radio is when you talk before and after every song. Any moron can segue a song because he or she has nothing worthwhile to say or is on the phone. Forget clocks and red and green dots to follow from PD's that have no clue. Example: 8)
WABC played the chime after every song and the DJ always talked. That's what made you want to continue to listen. Do you think Dan Ingram gave 2 **** about the artist and year the song came out or who produced it. NO, he did'nt,he made fun of the song and had fun on the air relating it to everyday life and kept the listener listening and so did Ron,Harry and Bruce. Most DJ's today have no personality and we will never see that again or hear that kind of radio again. The day the music died on WABC radio was the end. Every PD came to NY to record Dan and Ron and tried to copy them, I guess that's saying something of good radio. Lets face it Radio is very boring today. My son works with the last legend left on the air in radio at Sirius and he plays what he wants and what the listeners want to hear. Maybe that's why he left CBS-FM.

I have no interest in listening to any current radio including CBS-FM. Why would I bother listening to CBS-FM? 85% of the music is irrelevant to me. The 15% of the music that is relevant are the most over played 50s and 60s songs. I don't need to hear Baby Love or I Want To Hold Your Hand for the millionth time. Also, after growing up hearing 60s personality top forty radio, I have zero tolerance for CBS-FM's non personality personality approach with mediocre talent and mediocre audio processing.

And that was all fine and dandy in 1963. It's now 2010...times have changed, as have listeners and their wants and needs. And I do agree with Tony - many radio stations all across the country are booing and just plain SUCK. But there are may radio shows that are pearls in the snow - Rhythm Review with Felix Hernandez on Kiss-FM/WBGO is one, All Request Sat. Night with Rockin Ron on WDRC-FM up in Hartford, Doo Wop Drive in North Jersey with Big Tom on WMTR, and even Joe Causi on CBS-FM with Saturday Night 70's has some audience interaction.

Great radio is still around. You just have to dig for it.

Ninja edit: their audio processing, still, is far from mediocre. Trying to make a FM station sound like WABC would just be moronic. Their current CE has made the place sound the best it has in the 15 or so years I've been listening. And Bob Shannon is STILL one of the best musicologists/dj's out there...

I still go by this earlier statement. If you regularly call djs on the phone, you might be a groupie.
If you go to a djs personal appearance, you might be a groupie.
If you talk to the djs at a personal appearance, you might be a groupie.
If you think the djs actually care about you, you are definitely a groupie.

I don't know what world you are inhabiting but, I don't know too many djs who ever cared about the audience with rare exceptions. What I would say in response to what you said above, if you can't deal with the crappy pay, find a way to augment your salary. Dude...I never got burned in radio and I have done a variety of things in radio including owning stations
and being an air talent at a 50,000 watt A. M. rock station with a booming signal. I even did something at one point for CBS-FM.

Actually times haven't changed. People will still respond to entertaining personalities. That's why talk radio does well and CBS-FM shuts their djs up. The talent isn't there to do the entertaining of a good 60s jock.

Then ABC would go into 4 spots, jingle, record, Dan, spots. People seem to forget how many elements in each hour were not the jock or music. And Dan was forced to keep his comments to not much more than over the intros over the records. What made Ingram the master was his ability to get it across quickly.

As for my processing, find me a station playing this format that sounds better................ didn't think so. There are five people in this country that know processing. (Jeff Kieth, Bob Orban, Frank Foti, Jim Wood and me).

I only wish you knew what was going on... moron.

Here's one that's the truth. I dug out a Lundy aircheck from 1987.... guess what? SEVEN breaks in his 10:00 hour. Basically same pattern... song jock song bumper song jock song.

Radio Truth I do not know why your so BITTER!! If something happened to you in radio I am sorry that happened. I have met many nice people not only at wcbsfm but other stations throughout the years at not only their appearances but at Charities that I like to do. Still I do not feel I am a groupie, Yes, I do call at times and if they did not want to talk to you, they don't have too. I DO NOT go to see them so they can give me stuff! Turnpike, Thanks for sticking up, yes we are Loyal fans and friends of the station. Radio Truth, we must move on and realize that the personalities today care and are trying. Sorry your so Bitter, Life is just too short. Dee, Radio will never be the same but this is what is happening and we have to accept it or not listen. I know in my heart I am not a Groupie!! I have family and I do alot for them and Charities!! You do not know me, or if you do, YOU really Don't!! End of discussion, I have no more to say!!

I enjoy DJs who know the music and the artists and share that knowledge with the audience. Some good examples are Cousin Brucie, Bob Shannon, Pete Fornatale, and Pat St. John among many others. Whoever is behind the mike at WCBS-FM is a friend to the listeners. A good morning man cares that his/her listeners is aware of the weather and of traffic or transit delays that may affect them. If I just wanted to listen to music, I would just turn on my CD player or Ipod.

A groupie is an extremist who would travel for hours to meet a radio personality.

Have a nice day everybody and happy listening.

Bruce
