We were in this dilapidated old building along Fifth Avenue from 1940 to 1994, and the only reason the station moved was because the roof caved in over the main control room and the building's owner let the insurance lapse and there was no money to fix the roof. When I was there from 1990-93, we had mouse problems, but the big one was when the weekenders would forget to close the windows in the back of the building near the engineers' shop. The roof unit went kerplooey and no one wanted to pay to fix it. So these windows would be habitually left open. One day while I was reading my morning news, a robin flew into the studio and in front of my face as I was reading. The loud shriek I made into the open mic sure made those phones light up.
After the roof collapsed, the first thing the morning jock saw when he got into the station that day was the carcasses of about 100 or more dead pigeons from on top of the roof.
