filthy studios

Here's a nasty studio for ya. When KNON was at "The Old White HOuse" off San Jacinto in Dallas the studio was literally floor to ceiling in grafitti. Each Friday the morning show staff(News director, traffic guy, and me((volunteer)) would clean the studio every friday after the last hour of left wing dribble filed out of the studio. I saw mice between the console and the wall, roaches crawling around the floor around the remote transmitter and record cases. We would sweep, gather all trash that had gathered over the weekend and week, and mop the lower building floors b/c ACORN and the union was downstairs. Some how people would get past the front door security magnet and pee all over the floor on the lower level. This would be before the rest of the building personell would be there. When I would sit behind the control board I would have to make sure My chair didnt roll into one spot on the floor b/c I could very easily fall through the floor, and almost did on the air one morning. I also had to make sure that the window unit in the studio(which was right behind the mics) was turned on during break or before the show so that you didnt hear the difference on the air. Oh and I cannot forget about the pigeons that liked to nest next to that window unit and could be heard through the mics. Sometimes there would be beer cans left over from the weekend shows and food still in the studio. I think the best thing that could have clean that studio would have been a fire. Just burn the whole building to the ground along with the call letters and the management. That whole station is a P.O.S.!!

Do ya one better...WKPA in New Kensington (Pittsburgh).

We were in this dilapidated old building along Fifth Avenue from 1940 to 1994, and the only reason the station moved was because the roof caved in over the main control room and the building's owner let the insurance lapse and there was no money to fix the roof. When I was there from 1990-93, we had mouse problems, but the big one was when the weekenders would forget to close the windows in the back of the building near the engineers' shop. The roof unit went kerplooey and no one wanted to pay to fix it. So these windows would be habitually left open. One day while I was reading my morning news, a robin flew into the studio and in front of my face as I was reading. The loud shriek I made into the open mic sure made those phones light up.

After the roof collapsed, the first thing the morning jock saw when he got into the station that day was the carcasses of about 100 or more dead pigeons from on top of the roof.

I remember hearing about this. My friends live right down the road from New Ken, in Springdale. Can't remember who told me about it, possibly my friend who works for WDVE up there.

If that had happened to me, I'd have immediately played Fly, Robin, Fly from the Silver Convention.

One thing that AMAZES me about radio stations is the ability for employees to eat 12 hour old potato salad or whatever....Say the morning show does something where food is delivered at 7am....What doesn't get eaten goes tot he break room...beans, BBQ, sausage biscuits...whatever....Without fail, you walk by at 4 pm and what was 5 biscuits is now 3.....

I've worked at some clusters where the am shows would have a "Breakfast club"...cooking duties would rotate thru the week. You had to make enough to feed 6-8 people...but only once a week. The only rule was that no breakfast food was allowed....

Most filthy studio I was ever in was the "multi-use" studio at KLLI. This is the studio that everyone except Russ Martin uses. During the week all shows leave all their trash and uneaten food in the studio when their show is done. Weekend shows are even worse. Food on the floor, have empty cups of who knows what, and all sorts of cookie, chip and whatever crumbs on the board and computer keyboards. I remember hearing one of the shows complaing on air one time about the toenails that were left on the board. Glad I wasn't there then. That's just gross!

Sounds like it is time to enforce the "No food or drinks in the studio" rule. Ignoring it once results in a reprimand. Ignore it twice, you're outta there! It should be very easy to catch the culprit with the simplicity of webcams these days. :)

RadioGoon: I've worked in those studios. I know exactly what you mean. How about all the stains in the carpet and the footprints on the wall below the windows. The morning girls would come in to run Stern and bring in air freshner and plug ins if I member correctly.

There's more to this than the fact you've got immature, inconsiderate slobs using (and abusing) the studio. And to hell with the egos! Don't you agree that management is equally to blame for not cracking the whip?

The problem with cracking the whip is that the weekend people think because they pay for the hour(s) they use the studio its theirs. The problem with "talent" is they think the station is lucky to have them. Lets face it. The ops or Pd can get in a twist about this, but if they don't have the support of the GM, its useless. The GM is all about the revenue and the cleaning crew can take care of the mess. Sometimes the inconsiderate slobs run the joint.

???

That makes no sense... Weekend people get paid for their services, so why should they be paying for the hours they work? The ones who buy time to run their own shows, e.g. Neil Sperry, notwithstanding.

I'm really shocked about all this...I ate food in the control room, drank sodas/beer, yet still managed not to trash the damn place!!! It's simple...a trash can is there for a reason!!! With responsible people not leaving crap everywhere, our studio managed to stay fairly clean since the station started in '97.

Oh, and get this...If I needed to smoke a cigarette, I went OUTSIDE!!! (or at least in the sales office ;D)

I guess it's the fact that most radio folks can be lazy fools. Kinda sad, 'cause they seem to be the ones who stay when downsizing occurs...

Robert, I was referring to weekend talk programming. Not music jocks. Not all shows are this way but I have seen those that are.
