I'm sure that you guys will have lots of fun with this one. Last week I visitted a radio station that I once worked for down in the central Texas area. Let me tell you folks, I almost lost my entire lunch when I walked into the studio. The smell in there was probably the worst that I've experienced in a while. It smelled worse than any locker room that I've ever been in. I'm blind and couldn't see the rest of it, however the person that was with me whispered in my ear not to touch anything because it was really filthy and disgusting. They said that there was food on a plate that had obviously been there for a while based on how it looked. And there was several inches of dust hanging around. I wish that I could say the name of the station, however if I did it would get back and they would know exactly who said it. So what are your stories? This should be good.
 
Can't STAND a messy dirty studio! I've p.o.'ed a few people by making them clean up after their shift. I mean I'm going to be working in the studio for the next 5 hours. I don't wanna smell old pizza, an over rip banana, or see wrappings from a breakfast sandwich. I remeber one idiot had left a half can of coke on top of the board. Now my desk...
 
In our case, the only filthy area is dust inside the equipment furniture. :-[ :( The rest of the suite is usually spotless since we have a janitor.

There's no excuse for a filthy studio. NONE. I've seen cluttered studios, with papers and post-it notes reproducing everywhere, but food scraps, beverages other than water and the like are simply unacceptable. I worked at stations where the jock on the air before me left his full ashtray next to the cart machine and I was the unfortunate soul to knock it all over me and the on-air board. I raised a big enough stink about it to at least get a NO SMOKING sign put up in all three studios the following week.

Agreed. A few years ago I worked at a station where the Sunday night board op would bring in a tub of KFC or make microwave popcorn or some other greasy food. I just loved it when I'd come in to do AM drive and everything in the studio was covered with grease. Ugh.

Still, it beats the old days when smoking was allowed in studios (I haven't worked at one of those places since the early 80s) and the whole place smelled like an ashtray.

Yep, still have the board ops coming in on the weekends with greasy fast food. I'll take that over the smokers. It never ceased to amaze me how talent would bitch about their salaries so much yet still always have enough money for a case of Marlboro's.
 
I remember a sign in several studios at more than one radio station that said ... "This isn't your house ... and I'm not your Mother." Signed _________________, Owner/General Manager.

Two well known stations that I know of had GMs who actually did a white glove test every week, especially on Mondays. Warned once (through the PD) shame on me. Warned twice (through the boss) ... shame on you. And you were gone...

Dust bunnies not allowed, either.

It's bad in a lot of places, even in large market Radio and TV stations. One Radio Station I worked at, it got so bad, I hung up a sign that said, "Your Mother Does Not Work Here, You Will Have To Clean Up After Yourself." When I became PD, I banned both eating and smoking in the control and production rooms, because the stench and no one could hit the ash tray (or empty it) or the trash can. I'd hate to see some of these people's houses if they can't pick up after themselves or do a little cleaning at work.
 
when i started at BAP there had been an apple sitting on a table in the corner for over a year from what i have been told. later the weekend board-op took a bite of it and puked in the studios.

I was at a station... and what the hell, I'll call them out (get ready sno, buc). Digable Planets, a one-hit wonder hip-hop group was in town. We had them up in the studio and the bombing raid began. EVERY STALL in the bathroom was destroyed. THE RIBS DELIVERY was on the wall, the mic, the floor and the head shots (but somehow their clothes remained clean. Yes, there is more, but here is the catch.

I came back the next night... five shifts later... and chicken wing bones were still on the floor and sticky fingers were all over the carts and CDs. Hey, think the janitors got paid overtime though.
 
That's funny, the worst studio I've ever worked in was in Central Texas...hmmm. I wonder if,,,naw, it couldn't be.
 
Whenever somebody leaves our employ, the GM puts out an e-mail saying "(so and so) no longer works for our company. He is not allowed access to our data. He is not allowed on the premises unsupervised."

This is the same GM who is a neat freak and has a sign in the break room, "Mom doesn't work here anymore! Clean up your dirty dishes, remove old food from the refridgerator...."

Which I changed one day to read, "Mom no longer works for our company. She is not allowed access to our data...."

I would have told them, "You can get with this (a broom) and you can with that (a mop)" and if not, I'll have your a$$es arrested for vandalism. There's no excuse for that.
 
I know one place in town here where the board-ops consist of a family that brings in buckets of KFC and spreads them out all over the consoles while running games and shows. Needless to say their chicken-licken fingers really grease up the equipment and really leave a mess!
