First ever nationwide EAS test next week

Was there supposed to be a message? It sounded like tones & then some sort of white (maybe purple) noise for 20 seconds and then more tones.

I thought there was supposed to be a message.

But I'm not in terrestrial radio, so I don't know.

Reports coming in from around the country indicate this much heralded national EAS test failed; no audio or no activation.

We got activation at WEEM, but all static. Sounds like different regions got different bad results.

Boys and girls ... the dolcet tones heard in some locations between the bursts were delivered through ... are you ready? PHONE COUPLERS! New Millennium system, Alex G Bell technology from our Gubmint ... that would be their butt they can't hit with either hand!!!

At least 1 station in a county surrounding Indianapolis was still airing WIBC's audio (and the reception was terrible) 15 minutes after the test. I'm not mentioning call letters but I will say that's the longest streak of English language programming on that frequency in many years.

On the TV side: DirecTV dropped ALL channels (except locals) with a slate message saying it's a test of the EAS System and "Don't worry, it's only a test." Fort Wayne all local TV got it but garbled audio. The only radio I heard was WFWI and they had the same audio as TV.

What a load of crap.

Listening to the WFMS receiver we were able to rebroadcast duck farts then 30 seconds of white noise followed by duck farts. Not a good thing.

I love reading all about this joke of a EAS test. Thankfully I was not affected as I was listening to Shortwave. The problem with this whole thing is of course the lack of people anywhere. CheapChannel has cut so damn many jobs there is nobody left to locally run things outside of a few stations. Imagine if a real EAS broadcast was needed at say 3:00AM on a Sunday morning? God help us all.

Clear Channel has a bunker in Cincinnati that can place an emergency announcement on any of their stations at any time, and phone lines ring into that place after hours.

The whole point of EAS is to be automated.

Nearly all of the screwups this week appear to have been in Washington.

With so many stations experiencing problems, it will be interesting to see if they make a change or two and give it another shoot soon.
