First impressions of the Philly's 106-One

Do we really need this crap on TWO signals?

Three words: less than impressed...altho I'm sure the danceniks are doing the victory dance.

No, I don't think this station will appeal to me.

Yeah, the "Filly Needz A Danse Stayshun" gang are probably having victory parties as we speak.

so whats 104.5 gonna do ???

Become a talk station most likely.

As much as we all hate Clear Channel, they do understand that only certain formats have longevity... spoken word (news/talk/sports) being at the top of that list. Urban and urban-esqe formats are a close second.

I've gotta hand it to Clear Channel in Philly...this is perhaps the best "disinformation" campaign about an upcoming format change I've ever seen.

On these boards, we've had people proclaim that an alt-rocker with the name "Channel 106.1" was imminent. One even described it as a mix of current alternative rock and 90's alt-rock hits (much like CBS' WXRK/92.3 here).

It sounds to me like CC has decided, at least in Philly, to actively engage folks who posts on boards like these... and feed them different information to cover their upcoming tracks. Business-wise, it's very smart.

Hmmm, sounds ok, but I see a major burn out factor in this format, that could make it dead in less than a year...unless major tweaks are done every now and then.

This stations logo looks like its from the early 90's. I think it will be dead by this time next year.

Yawn...another bland, predictable, over focus group tested, boring format....it'll tank just like the Blink 102.7 thing in NYC a few years back...what a disaster that was. Makes you wonder sometimes!

The new format on 106.1 could explain why they began a live dance show a few weeks ago...ya think? The Bot Troy

This is not a dance format, dance product is not strong enough today to support it being a format on a full market signal.

This is a rhythmic hot ac format on 1061, you won't hear Peter Lutz, Bob Sinclar or any current dance music that you hear sometimes on ktu or that dominates the plays lists of the energy stations or the xm/sirius dance channels.

Are you a female aged 25-44? If not your opinion doesn't matter, sorry.

actually, my last post made no sense....the new weekend dance show was on 104.5 (not 106.1)...see I am confused already....The Boy Troy

This was just handed to me from "Angry Typing Dance Fan":

I HEARD THEM PLAY KT TUNSTALL AND BLONDIE! THAT'S ROCK MUSIC! THIS STATION'S GONNA FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seems like it's probably similar to the Alan Burns "Movin" format:

http://www.burnsradio.com/movin/

Which is not unlike what they did with 104.5 when they had "The New Sound of Philadephia - Star 104.5"

Does anyone remember that? The early versions of Star 104.5 were a very dance heavy hot AC.

And we all know how well that turned out....

Don't forget that you can still hear real jazz (as opposed to the jazzy elevator music that was featured on WJJZ) on WRTI (90.1 in Philly, with relay and translator stations covering a huge footprint in eastern and central Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, most of Delaware, and part of Maryland) from 6 PM to 6 AM weekdays, 6 PM to 8 PM Saturday (possibly delayed during Metropolitan Opera season), and all day Sunday except from 3 to 6 PM. If you prefer the urban AC-flavored vocals that were also heard on WJJZ, you can find them on WDAS-FM (105.3) or WRNB (107.9). WJJZ (or whatever the new call letters will be) still plays jazz (although not "smooth jazz") on its HD-2 channel, also available on the Internet.

Now...if only WHYY-FM would revert to an all-classical format (or if Greater Media could be convinced to revive WFLN on one of its Philly frequencies) so that WRTI could go back to playing jazz full-time...

Well I think (even though I haven't heard the new station yet as the stream isn't working) that Clear Channel should have kept WJJZ as smooth jazz on 106.1 and flipped 104.5 to the Rhythmic AC format instead. I mean come on, classic AC hits just don't mix for me. Smooth jazz is rare, why get rid of it?

I added this new station to one of my FM presets. I love the new station and sound! Keep it up, Philly! :)

I took both 104.5 AND 106.1 off of mine. This is, of course, pending on what Cheap Channel does with SNI.

Chances are they'll murder that signal as well. WTG!!!!!

From looking at the playlist of songs that were posted on here from another postee, sure it looks like a possible burnout factor like most mainstream genres have. The problem is that there hasn't been enough fresh hit material that comes out to spread around to all the 12 or so variable pop/r&b/rock formats to keep most of those fresh.
These Adult dance, AC, Adult Rock, or any type of adult format never stays fresh if they have to keep on relying on non current material and not enough good all around fresh material which we been experiencing for the last 15 or so years , where nothing stays fresh.
Every time someone developes a cublicle format, it might sound good for 3 months, then what? move around and listen to another format , because you finally heard their whole 300 research song playlist.
