I have noticed KING-5 news has recently added new whooshes at the start of their first few stories of the night in the 10 and 11 o'clock newscasts, and at the top of the hour on Northwest Cable News. I guess it's supposed to make you think the Blue Angels are flying into your living room. It sounds like you slept-walked onto I-5 under the Convention Center and woke up to an incredible noise.
I mean, KING has the most credible news operation in the Northwest, but they have to crap it up with all of these "exciting" graphics that just get in the way of the content. It's only "boring" if you're not actually paying attention to what the anchors and reports are actually saying, and are looking for an attention deficit stimuli to pull your eyes away from your smartphone while sitting at the bar with a TV. I don't think that's actually where the targeted audience for the newscast is, so who is deciding to add all of these distracting sound effects and whirling graphics on top of everything? Hell, even Nova on PBS is doing that. Just makes me think there's not much substance to the program if they feel a need to whoosh it up every 45 seconds.
The amount of pop up graphics and King-Five Kung-Fu sound effects during the news is inversely proportional to the amount of credibility and depth you'll find in any station's newscast. And I hate to think that their mostly decent news coverage is going the way of their lesser competitors.
Hey, why don't they add those whooshes and twirling graphics during the commercials breaks between ads? Won't that make us want to engage with the ads more? No? Then get them off of the newscasts, please!
Actually, for a long, long time I thought King 5 News is super boring. It always was, because many
Seattle folks gave the stations a pass because the reputation was so good. And King knows it. For instance, King has had the same set and graphics for too many years. And they always get complacent, and are slow to move on their on air look. Remember the old set from the 90s..I swear they took 20 years to even replace that. And it has nothing to do with swooshes and what not, its all about that King not giving a really rememberable product outside people glorifying the career of Enerson. Remember back in the day, NBC always used hit up KING for big stories and what not, but I feel King does not have the clout and relevance to others nationally that it used to.
I have always felt that their sister station in Portlandia, KGW, was always a better product than they were. They always had a fresh look, and always kept pushing the needle in my
book with the way they approached the news.
