If you want to see annoying scrools, crashing graphics, etc., please come down and visit me in Phoenix. The Gannett station here is famous for putting everything at the bottom of the screen. They did get rid of the set that turned "bright red" when there was "Breaking News", though

The Belo station here is the least flashy. Many here consider it "boring". You guys may have a rude awakening when Gannett and Sinclair bring their flashy, generic product to Seattle with cheap talent. I wonder how long Gannett is going to want to pay Jean Enersen's salary or Sinclair with Dan Lewis' salary. It's going to get very interesting...

Oh Lord.......NO!

Those scrolling tickers and screaming graphics in HD trigger my migraine headaches worse than anything!

Watching the evening news will feel like a torture session at Guantanamo if they pull this. Guess I'll be watching KIRO-TV news.....

Oh, it gets worse...slogans like "Taking Action" and "Telling It Like It Is", hiring reporters with one year of experience in Yuma, anchors who can barely read the news, etc. It makes Seattle news look positively WONDERFUL!

Well, Seattle is not immune from news slogans. KIRO TV leads with "Dedicated, Straightforward Seattle News Coverage". KING TV uses "Coverage You Count On", and KOMO has "Working 4 You".

I have noticed KING-5 news has recently added new whooshes at the start of their first few stories of the night in the 10 and 11 o'clock newscasts, and at the top of the hour on Northwest Cable News. I guess it's supposed to make you think the Blue Angels are flying into your living room. It sounds like you slept-walked onto I-5 under the Convention Center and woke up to an incredible noise.

I mean, KING has the most credible news operation in the Northwest, but they have to crap it up with all of these "exciting" graphics that just get in the way of the content. It's only "boring" if you're not actually paying attention to what the anchors and reports are actually saying, and are looking for an attention deficit stimuli to pull your eyes away from your smartphone while sitting at the bar with a TV. I don't think that's actually where the targeted audience for the newscast is, so who is deciding to add all of these distracting sound effects and whirling graphics on top of everything? Hell, even Nova on PBS is doing that. Just makes me think there's not much substance to the program if they feel a need to whoosh it up every 45 seconds.

The amount of pop up graphics and King-Five Kung-Fu sound effects during the news is inversely proportional to the amount of credibility and depth you'll find in any station's newscast. And I hate to think that their mostly decent news coverage is going the way of their lesser competitors.

Hey, why don't they add those whooshes and twirling graphics during the commercials breaks between ads? Won't that make us want to engage with the ads more? No? Then get them off of the newscasts, please!

It's when the graphics are more prominent than the actual news that I begin to have a problem......

They do little "whooshes" sometimes on KOMO-4 during national news segments, and trending segments. Yes, I think it's annoying. This is the NEWS, not an action movie!

I guess these whooshes on 5 is Gannett preparing for something worse -- three different tickers during the entire newscast?!?

I'm not sure these are new ownership changes, as these entities have no controlling interest in these stations yet. I think we can blame the current ownership, perhaps preparing the properties for the change coming, or perhaps just a natural progression of their current ownership, despite some who insist the new owners have brought this on. I don't think that is the case.

That being said, KING-TV and KOMO-TV will be under new ownershp by this time next year. KIRO will either react or not.

A lot of unknowns at this point. Let's check back in May 2014 and see where everyone stands. Frankly, while many here are predicting changes, I will go out on a limb and say things won't look much different. However, the 2014-2015 season is where we most likely see changes on all three network afiliates.

http://www.sbgi.net/site_mgr/temp/Allbritton 2_1fhrbvkt.shtml

Sinclair purchase of Allbritton stations includes ABC station in DC and Newschannel 8 (aka WTBD) which is essentially a NWCN type 24 hour type cable station serving DC. I purchased time on both stations personally for a number of years and they are/were good products. Good news operation in a larger market. Could be interpreted as positive news for the Fisher crew.

What about Fisher's small markets that have been aquired by Sinclar? Is a spin-off inevitable? I have already heard that the Idaho Falls property has been spun-off to a small company. Anyone have some insight here?

The thing is that KTVK never looked like other Belo stations. It seemed that Belo gave KTVK a lot of autonomy in terms of presentation.

Fisher/Sinclair deal formally approved by Shareholders this morning.
Maybe 10-15 of us in the room for the meeting .... everyone else literally "phoned it in".

And the "non-binding advisory proposal regarding merger-related compensation" - aka the "golden parachutes" - was also approved.

My sources tell me that there will be a thank-you breakfast tomorrow morning serving - wait for it - Fisher scones.

Actually, for a long, long time I thought King 5 News is super boring. It always was, because many
Seattle folks gave the stations a pass because the reputation was so good. And King knows it. For instance, King has had the same set and graphics for too many years. And they always get complacent, and are slow to move on their on air look. Remember the old set from the 90s..I swear they took 20 years to even replace that. And it has nothing to do with swooshes and what not, its all about that King not giving a really rememberable product outside people glorifying the career of Enerson. Remember back in the day, NBC always used hit up KING for big stories and what not, but I feel King does not have the clout and relevance to others nationally that it used to.

I have always felt that their sister station in Portlandia, KGW, was always a better product than they were. They always had a fresh look, and always kept pushing the needle in my
book with the way they approached the news.

Too much flash or not enough? This has been an ongoing question with KING-TV News. If you look at the history, KING has changed their look as much, if not more, than most local stations in the past 40 years. In 1971, they turned the market upside down with a "no-desk" living room look for the 11:00. It was soon copied by KNBC in Los Angeles. In 1973 they remodeled this look on the 5:00 as well. No desk. Then in 1975 they were the first in Seattle to try a "newsroom" set, (which KIRO copied in 1980). Then they went into a funk with stuffy sets that even lasted into the move to the new facility (circa 1981). It wasn't until Bob Jordan came in in the early 80's (yes, the same Bob Jordan now running KIRO-TV news), that they updated the set to semi-modern design. In 1991, a total new look came on board with bright colors and graphics. Then sometime around the turn of the century they went to the current look, which in essence remains today. In summary, they have a history of shaking things up, but lately not so much.

Once again, steering this thread back on topic...
FCC approval is done. Ownership change effective tomorrow morning. My sources say you'll hear something different on the legals early midday...

So, has KOMO changed their news, or getting ready to fire some news personnel to make room for new Sinclair talent? And, I guess Ring of Honor Wrestling will air in the next few weeks as well.

Had a strange dream about "KZOK Newsradio 1090" a few minutes ago.....

Adam Gerkhe was on traffic, Sprince Arboghast was reading news with Bill Yeend.

And this is one of those weed-less nights......

I should NEVER do this again.......

Anything would be better than that KFNQ waste of signal! ;D
