You silly programming people....it is not about listeners, the sound/music of KIX, tight segs, or anything programming related. This is about the almighty dollar. Venturing out of the selector screen, from behind the board, out of production and on the streets with a sales team doing a pitch for a local business that targets a white 25-54 demo, arguably 18-34 as well, you learn that playing music to attract such demographics positions the business (radio station) to best obtain local revenue. Considering that Flash can't cover the metro, they probably are not even trying to compete for any numbers or national revenue that is allocated to the Memphis market. No matter how better Flash's programming can be above KIX - it will never matter. The signal will not compete against KIX - and therefore no numbers to justify a choice for national revenue to position itself – and therefore will not take any KIX national revenue. So what if you can best program and position a station to red necks? Want a trophy or R&R PD of the year? Try positioning the station to a firm in New York like Omni Media. KIX could go jockless and sill rake in the huge piece of national revenue; hence the phenomena of why jocks and PD's will continue to be fired and removed from a P&L.
Back to local revenue. This will be and has been Flash's only source of monies to pay the bills. They need the local red neck business owner’s attention and ear, along with all the local agencies in town that represent the local red necks. Local business owners and local agency buyers who like the audience of KIX have HATED KIX's rates for YEARS. KIX has always demanded the highest rates, the highest CPP and rarely clear an order. So when you pay $200, prime dollars, for a spot in AM drive and only 75% of your order clears, you created a high level of pissed offness. The businessman or local agency does not get what they paid for, is shorted and could have gotten exactly what they wanted delivered at 100% for less money on another station. But instead, all local agency and business has been forced to swallow KIX's SHI* because they are "so high in demand" and "these are the market conditions" and "this is how it goes to reach our audience."
Flash will now cater to this pissed offness. They will have some success should their "customer service" be of a higher level than that of their format competitor. There is a handful of local business and agencies who will use Flash as a hedge with KIX negotiations and could very well allocate some of their local dollars for the better service and value. And by the way, most all of the white red neck business owners are in Mississippi or Tipton County. More in Mississippi though. Amazingly the Flash radio station is located in Mississippi and the signal better serves Mississippi.
It appears someone just wants to make a profit, not take down anything.....
