FLASH 95.3

Hey, has anybody been listening to Flash 95.3 - Memphis Greatest Hits? I like what they play!! Just good music by great artists from all eras. No pretenses when it comes to formats and such. I just wish it had a stronger signal. Anybody know who owns that station? It's good to hear Nikki on there (formerly of the Buzz).

Nice folks on there--and Nikki in particular is a stellar talent.

She's destined for greatness in no small part because of the crucial training she received when she was first hired and put on the air (ironically on the same frequency where she's found today). The tallest buildings, just as the best talents, all have the common element of a solid foundation.

gone in a flash!!!
....Kix finally has some competition, there goes their #1 revenue position!!!

you took me wrong Grapevine.....
I like your analogy, and it's probably correct in wattage and sq. miles covered. If what I hear about the exodus from M-town to N. MS. is true then the prime spending demo is moving with it. The new country station will take enough ad dollars from Kix to pull them out of the top biller spot. 104.5 and Kix use to battle it out monthly when it came to market revenue. Again, I've beeen gone a while but from all I hear nothings changed.

Seems as though it'd be pretty easy to take some agency dollars simply by offering another source for country in the market.
For someone to think that a new country station that has even SOME signal in the market won't have any affect on KIX...is, in my opinion, incorrect.

Well, there, an old saying that is appropriate here, "a butterfly flaps its wings... and causes a hurricane halfway across the world."

Butterfly theory. The idea that even small, insignificant things can have important effects. True, I suppose. But, remember, despite some sort of grand outcome, the butterfly is still JUST A BUTTERFLY.

DE

So true...
But, who's to say that one little, gentle nudge from that butterfly's wing won't be all that it takes to have Kix fall down the hill just a tad.
ANY country competition, while NEVER running KIX out of town...will have an impact on listeners AND revenue (Although maybe small), and competition always makes the radio better for everyone.
I haven't listened to KIX much lately (never much, really), but when I have...it sounded kind of phoned in. if you will.
Some country competition should put 'em back in "hungry" mode.
They've had a free ride since Entercom pulled the Froggy plug. And you can hear it.

95.3 was country from the late 1970s to sometime in the early 1990s and had ZERO effect on KIX 106.

What has changed in the last 15 years to suddenly make country on 95.3 something for KIX to be concerned about?

You don't think that after such a long absence without ANY other source for country, that some KIX listeners may stray to check it out?
You don't think that ANY of those will stay just for something different?
Well...maybe the "fickle" nature of the average radio listener has changed...

And...just because someone didn't do it right before doesn't necessarily mean it won't be done better this time.

Do you work at KIX? Or are you trying to work for them?

I'm not attempting to slam KIX in any way.

relax.

What Meep said plus what mphsmusic said. Competition + migration = a chance. Call it the Starbucks Theory.

You silly programming people....it is not about listeners, the sound/music of KIX, tight segs, or anything programming related. This is about the almighty dollar. Venturing out of the selector screen, from behind the board, out of production and on the streets with a sales team doing a pitch for a local business that targets a white 25-54 demo, arguably 18-34 as well, you learn that playing music to attract such demographics positions the business (radio station) to best obtain local revenue. Considering that Flash can't cover the metro, they probably are not even trying to compete for any numbers or national revenue that is allocated to the Memphis market. No matter how better Flash's programming can be above KIX - it will never matter. The signal will not compete against KIX - and therefore no numbers to justify a choice for national revenue to position itself – and therefore will not take any KIX national revenue. So what if you can best program and position a station to red necks? Want a trophy or R&R PD of the year? Try positioning the station to a firm in New York like Omni Media. KIX could go jockless and sill rake in the huge piece of national revenue; hence the phenomena of why jocks and PD's will continue to be fired and removed from a P&L.

Back to local revenue. This will be and has been Flash's only source of monies to pay the bills. They need the local red neck business owner’s attention and ear, along with all the local agencies in town that represent the local red necks. Local business owners and local agency buyers who like the audience of KIX have HATED KIX's rates for YEARS. KIX has always demanded the highest rates, the highest CPP and rarely clear an order. So when you pay $200, prime dollars, for a spot in AM drive and only 75% of your order clears, you created a high level of pissed offness. The businessman or local agency does not get what they paid for, is shorted and could have gotten exactly what they wanted delivered at 100% for less money on another station. But instead, all local agency and business has been forced to swallow KIX's SHI* because they are "so high in demand" and "these are the market conditions" and "this is how it goes to reach our audience."

Flash will now cater to this pissed offness. They will have some success should their "customer service" be of a higher level than that of their format competitor. There is a handful of local business and agencies who will use Flash as a hedge with KIX negotiations and could very well allocate some of their local dollars for the better service and value. And by the way, most all of the white red neck business owners are in Mississippi or Tipton County. More in Mississippi though. Amazingly the Flash radio station is located in Mississippi and the signal better serves Mississippi.

It appears someone just wants to make a profit, not take down anything.....

I'm curious..is "pissed offness" a certified advertising term?

Also, it's "redneck" not "red neck".

Dang! Gotta go. One of them cars in the front yard just fell off the blocks.

I am seeing it said, in fits and snatches... what has changed in 15 years is more people live in the area covered by 95.3's signal. A LOT more people. Hey, quit snickering. What?

"Pissed offness" is a word I learned listening to KIX 106.

What was cool in the 90's was Froggy was cool and hip. They went towards a younger crowd, when Kix went to an older crowd. Froggy was on location at Spurs, Kix at Shooters. They seemed to have a demographic. I know Country theme clubs and line dancing are not popular these days in these neck of the woods.

What I do not understand is why Rebel does not have an agreement with the casinos to be the exclusive concert station. Sam's Town has Country concerts all the time. Gold Strike and Horseshoe has them, too. Rebel would get more listeners, because they will be the only station giving away tickets. Even if some of the tickets are comped, they could have their dj's introduce the acts. This would give the station "word of mouth" to an average of 2,000 people at concerts every other week that might not have even known the station existed. As part of the agreement, the morning show could give away casino buffets and hotel stays. Wasn't Sam's Town CMT Casino of the Year? That would make the partnership reach further. Why doesn't Rebel get the radio rights to The Riverkings? Or is that too much money?

What I do not understand is why Rebel does not have an agreement with the casinos to be the exclusive concert station.

Perhaps because the casinos would be fools to enter into such an agreement. When the casinos book a mid-level country act into one of their venues, they want more than 200 people in Desoto County to know about it.

Why doesn't Rebel get the radio rights to The Riverkings?

Minor-league hockey play-by-play on your country station? You are kidding, right?
