FM Bandscan in Edmonds, WA 6/27/12

Well, I don't think the FCC cares about dx. Actually, I read online a while back that that's why the fm band was moved, because there was more ducting lower down where fm used to be. Also, the local on 104.3 was not on yet when these were filed, there was a translator for KCMS on that frequency. If I were in charge, you would probably see a number of shortspaced high power stations, not a bunch of low-power stations that no one listens to.

Yesterday I took walks around Edmonds and Woodway. There was some enhanced reception to Portland [tropo? didn't notice it in Bellevue] and other coastal areas yesterday. Here's the scan in both Edmonds and Woodway.
Using Grundig G8 to help adjacents.

Wow! You got a lot of Portland signals there. I do wonder if there has been some ducting lately, my hd radio picked up RDS on 102.1 on Saturday, although I don't think it read it right, it said KRTQ. I also did pick up KINK I think with a bit of static on the hd radio. What I thought was odd was the radio stopping on the dead carrier of KASB that never happens out here. Goldylox, I thought about your problem with KCIS, and it's almost a double IF problem. 630+455 = 1085, just 5 khz away from 1090.

I think its obvious these translator gluttons looks for the frequencies of Canadian FMs, and just file on top of them, with a stipulation on paper that their signal won't hit the otherside of the border, just a few miles short of it. Which is about as much of a reality scenario as their theology and politics (!).

I think this is an outgrowth of the FCC apparenly no longer protecting any Canadian signals on this side of the border, even for 50kw transmitters a few miles away (listen to CKWX news 1130 any late afternoon starting a few hours before "critical hour" would kick in). To me, it seems like another sleazy opportunistic way to find a loophole to get more CPs. And then to eventually get lots more cash for them some day. Even if it ruins the ability, not even to "DX," but to provide multiple program services (not just conservative religious material) on the dial.

I also think this handful of "religious" national satellite-translator-casters (I'm trying to be nice and avoiding coining a nastier word for them) often target the signals of NPR affiliates and jump on the same freq or an adjacent as close to their secondary service contours as they can get away with. (That happened to a station I worked at, and to many others I'm aware of, and took away substantial coverage areas and listeners/supporters - the public stations rarely have the resources, time, or vision outside of their own internal issues to tackle these translator invaders with lawyers).

But will anybody within the FCC ever openly address this problem that's jamming the non-comm part of the dial into a lot of audio mush? Or will the NAB, for the good of the industry and the future of terrestrial radio?

Today in Edmonds I had some more Portland enhancement. Finally got KBFF Live 95.5 with song match to playlist [Wake Up Call Maroon 5]. Also had KXJM, KLTH, KOPB, KINK, KXL, KKCW, KRSK, KPDQ, KGON, KWJJ and a weak KUPL into Edmonds. Having a 200 ft hill turning Seattle stations into unlistenable mush helps!

I also had a very weak 91.7 KZAZ Bellingham under KSVR. 120 watts! Bongwater, how far have you gotten KZAZ?

I've heard KSVR and KZAZ duking it out in Anacortes at/around the ferry terminal. But that's probably as far usually as they ever get normally.....

Went back to Edmonds once again and did a scan. Most of this scan was done in Yost Park, elevation 300-350 feet. Lots of goodies from the North, mostly.

Keep in mind also...solar flare activity has been high the past few days, so some stations could be from E-skip as well. Keep an ear out for any station IDs!

91.9 KPTZ/unid second station with guitar music. This is NOT Calvary Chapel K220HD in Fall City, I'm stumped!
I wonder if KSJU 91.9 in Friday Harbor has finally hit the air? I can't find a website for them and their Facebook site hasn't been updated for a couple of weeks.

As for CBCV-1 99.5 in Metchosin-Sooke, here's all the stats from the REC NET site:
http://cdbs.recnet.net:8080/fmq.php?canfm=CBCV-FM-1

Conditions have been pretty good up here too the past few days. Yesterday I had little 7 watt K210CN 89.9 from Bellingham blasting in and KNWP 90.1 in Port Angeles totally dominated over semi-local CJSF 90.1 in Burnaby. All we need now is for some nice e-skip to show its face.

None of this was Es. I would have known if there were a ton of 6m paths and red lines on the TVFM Skip Log that there was skip. Just very nice enhancement.

Dan there was some low FM skip on 4th of July afternoon/evening. Was in East Marysville at that time. Mostly stayed around low FM but got up to 97.5 at one point. No IDs heard, only classical on 89.9, All Things Considered on 88.9 [which I thought was KSWS], and classical on 91.5.

K202ED Mount Vernon is 4 WATTS!

And you're in Edmonds?

Well, Crainbebo gave me the inspiration to do an FM Bandscan in Aldergrove. Here's what was coming in up here in the late afternoon/early evening today. For the moment I'm just using rabbit ears on my JVC & Technics receivers and a C Crane Radio-EP. Some type of external antenna is in the cards.

My place in Aldergrove is exactly 86.59 miles north of Yost Park in Edmonds according to Google's gmap pedometer.

It sure sounded like it, very weak and unstable however, blips. BUT...it's over 1200 feet HAAT. So 4.5 watts can make it out with that much HAAT, a LONG ways out.

K202ED [or whatever is doing The Effect] can be heard in East Marysville [near SR-9 and 528] over/under KPLU's IBOC.

Today's scan at Pine Ridge Park Edmonds [a few blocks E of Yost Park, down a small hill however] and other areas in Edmonds... Rushed a bit unfortunaly.

98.3 [how far does CKSR make it out normally?]

Pretty well nothing beyond the central and eastern areas of the Lower Mainland. The reason being because the tower is located midway up the north slope of Elk Mountain on the south side of town. There is a significant range of mountains (ie-Mount Baker) due south of the transmitter site which obviously blocks the signal from going south.

Besides CKSR there are 5 other Chilliwack FM's sharing that same tower (89.5, 91.7, 99.9, 102.1, & 107.5). I get them all loud and clear in Aldergrove, but I recall Bongwater mentioning awhile back that they are rare catches in Bellingham despite the fact that CKSR's contours on the REC NET site show them "almost" making it to that city:
http://cdbs.recnet.net:8080/fmq.php...=US&zip=&party=&party_type=LICEN&fac_type=ALL

OK. Thanks for letting me know. I shall NOT check 107.5 next time for 640w CFUN in Chiliwack.

If you're still musing over it, the 91.9 station is one of the two new stations from Port Townsend (the other is the religious one on 91.1). They've both caught me by surprise diailing down the dial a few times, since 91.9 used to be another religious sat caster repeating from high up yonder around Fall City or somewhere.

KPTZ is a volunteer-based variety format noncommercial station, and it's a straight shot across the water from Edmonds, albeit at a bit of an angle. KROH at 91.1 seems very strong. Funny how no one else got on that freq all these years. And Port Townsend is nicely positioned to get a signal from North Seattle to nearly the Canadian border, even with a relatively modest amount of power, since it's right in between and across the salt water.

I'm actually kind of blown away at how well both KROH 91.1 and KPTZ 91.9 make it into this area (KSQM 91.5 too). Must be a total clear shot between Port Townsend and Aldergrove.

101.9 CFUV/CITR presumed with some DJ named Tristan

Crainbebo.....I can confirm via their website that the Production Coordinator at CITR 101.9 is Tristan Koster.

Usually, CFUV was what cut into Mount Vernon (and spotty with CITR in Bellingham) But being a DIRECT shot east, I can better understand why CFUV came in better than CITR when I was living there.

But as for K202ED, even for 4 watts off a 1,200 peak, that's STILL an unbelievable distance. Especially when you can barely hear it at all in most of Mount Vernon proper.
