FM Frequency of the Week 2018-19: 98.1

We're reviewing reception conditions on the FM frequencies that were formerly known as the Class B/C frequencies.

What do you---or did you---get on 98.1

East Tennessee: WFGW (106.7, sister to powerhouse WMIT, Black Mountain NC) translator W251BR. Before that, 98.1 was reasonably open, except for a pirate in South Knoxville that played 80s music on what sounded like a CD changer. Before that, it was a tossup among WBUL, Lexington "The Bull", CHR WHZT, Williamson, SC and WLND, Signal Mountain TN (less often).

E-Skip heard in East Tennessee: The Classical station in the Bahamas made an appearance on my car radio in Sevierville in July 2016. A very brief appearance by a Radio Reloj transmitter in Cuba (15 seconds) in Knoxville in July 2012 (same opening produced the Caymans on 104.1).
Still UNID from 2015: Very young sounding female DJ, Southern New England's Country.

Retro/other: Dayton, OH area: WUDR, Dayton, OH in parts of town. WBUL (the former WKQQ) made pretty frequent appearances, even as far north as the Celina, OH area, especially before WDFM came on the air. Also logged WIBN, Earl Park IN.

Lafayette, IN: I don't remember much until WIBN flipped from 98.3 to a higher powered signal on 98.1. (I visited them when they were indeed in Earl Park on 98.3. The station was in a dilapated old school building with broken windows.

Retro DX clip of the week: KLRG, Lawton, OK from 1975: http://46124.info/FM/Oklahoma/OK Lawton 98.1 1975 KRLG.mp3

Far northwest suburbs of Chicago.... 98.1 is usually blank save for occasional light splatter from the Chicago 97.9. WMGN from Madison, WI occasionally breaks thrrough. (38kw from 600 feet AAT. About 85 miles to my northwest).

Yakima WA

Mostly open here. KISC Spokane (Adult Contemporary) and KING-FM Seattle (Classical) fade in and out all day. This is another fantastic channel for E-skip and meteor scatter. Logs here include:

KMBZ Kansas City MO (News/Talk)
KKCL Lorenzo TX (Classic Hits - Awesome 98)
KSKZ Copeland KS (Top 40)
KGTM Rexburg ID (Hot AC - METEOR SCATTER)
KIFM San Diego (Soft AC - now KXSN, Sunny 98.1, and also logged with the new calls. Used to be Smooth Jazz.)
KBAC Las Vegas NM (Adult Album Alternative)
KKFM Colorado Springs CO (Classic Rock)
WWJO St. Cloud MN (Country - one of the very few 'W' calls I have in the logs.)
KISQ San Francisco CA (Soft AC)
KKJG San Luis Obispo CA (Country)
KFGE Milford NE (Country)
KRXV Yermo CA (Hot AC - Highway Vibe // KHWY, KHYZ)

Mankato, MN (moved last week)

Most of the time KBEW Blue Earth, MN (country) but when it gets humid WWJO St Cloud (and its 100kw 305m thunderstick) comes through.
(note WWJO is 1 of only 3 stations outside of Minneapolis/St Paul that is a class C station..100kw 300-600m stick. The other 2 are KCLD 104.7 St. Cloud and KNXR 97.5 Rochester...yeah I know C0 is pretty much the same except that stops at 450m tower height)

Mason City, IA:
Mostly splatter from adjacent channel KCMR.

Central KS:
Usually nothing. Can occasionally pick up KSKZ from Copeland in Southwest KS (roughly 3 hours away) or KMBZ-FM/KC.

KISQ (75 Kw) San Francisco Soft AC...another strong signal. This used to be 98.1 Kiss FM, a Bay Area favorite, which played Urban AC. Renel Brooks, who is the announcer for the San Francisco Giants, used to be the morning DJ. Now it's just another boring "workplace" station, albeit, very successful.
