FM Frequency of the Week - 89.7 MHz

In the St. Louis area, WCBW East St. Louis (Contemporary Christian) is heard in St. Louis City and the Illinois side; about 15 miles away, KGNX Ballwin (Christian talk/teaching) covers West St. Louis County. For two Class A stations, these two can duke it out quite impressively around the St. Louis City/County border.

Northern VA,

It's W209BY Woodbridge, VA, a translator for WRVL 88.3, a religious station in Lynchburg, VA. Before the translator went on air, I used to hear weak WTMD 89.7 Towson, MD (just north of Baltimore), a non-commercial triple A station. Rats.

From Coldwater, MI-

Not as good as it once was, but still one of my best open frequencies. I will list all of them in the order I hear them, from most to least common.

WONU- Kankakee, IL- Cont. Christian- Shine dot FM
W209BA- Kendallville, IN- Cont. Christian- Star 88.3 (10 watts from 40 miles away. Not bad!)
WUBS- South Bend, IN- Urban Gospel-
WNOC- Bowling Green, OH- Catholic/EWTN- (Used to get WKSU quite often before this one signed on in '11)
WLMN- Manistee, MI- Public Radio- Interlochen Academy
WOSU- Columbus, OH- Public Radio- Ohio State University
WUWM- Milwaukee, WI- Public Radio- Univ. Wisconsin/Milwaukee
WKSU- Kent, OH- Public Radio- Kent State University (very rare since WNOC signed on)
WTAC- Burton, MI- Cont. Christian- Smile FM
WLNZ- Lansing, MI- Variety- Lansing Community College
WRGF- Greenfield, IN- Variety- The Cougar

Once heard, but since deleted/moved, etc etc.
WHWE- Howe, IN- Howe Military School- Station no longer exists.
W209BC- Wakelee, MI- Family Radio- Replaced by full-power WOFR 89.5 in Schoolcraft, MI.
WOCR- Olivet, MI- College- Moved to 89.1 with more power.

Mystery?
WSPB- Bedford, MI- Catholic- Station was licensed to be on the air from a tower north of Battle Creek with 205 watts. Station is now listed as silent. May or may not ever make it to the air.

I just saw on the FCC that WSPB filed to go silent. Here is their reason: "LICENSEE HAS REACHED AN AGREEMENT IN PRINCIPLE TO ASSIGN THE LICENSE OF WSPB(FM) TO ANOTHER NON-PROFIT ENTITY, AND IT IS HOPED THAT THE FCC FORM 314 APPLICATION WILL BE FILED WITHIN THE NEXT 30 DAYS. THE PUBLIC INTEREST, CONVENIENCE AND NECESSITY WOULD BE WELL SERVED BY THE GRANT OF THIS STA REQUEST."

WLMN is also known for being an underperformer.

Monroe WA

89.7 here is usually a weak KMWS Mt. Vernon, WA (NWPR News) or KNHC IBOC. Also get CJSU Duncan, BC somewhat from here (110 mi). I have not logged any E-skip here.

In Pacific Beach, WA I sometimes get KLCC Eugene, OR (220 mi).

Portland, OR - KBPS hash/splatter

Yakima, WA - KSOH splatter

-crainbebo

In Houston it is semi-local KACC-Alvin, Texas from Alvin Community College playing classic rock.
