FM TALK: NOWWWWWWWWWWW IT BEGINS...

I disagree.

In fact,

Awesome.

Here is a serious question, how many listeners did Stern have at his peak?

As of noon today, Columbus' only FM talk station went to Classic Hits.

In just one day shy of a year, the number of news/talk stations in Columbus went from four to one.

Now it begins.

It would be interesting to know, of the 4 news/talkers that started out the year in Columbus (their programs- satellite vs live and local). The one AM talker that is still standing, is it the Beck/Rush/Hannity Premiere lineup that generally is considered to be "The Top Tier", or is another group of satellite talkers (conservative or liberal) holding court in Columbus, or did live and local beat out 3 other competitors including the Premiere lineup.

In answer to your question...local hosts in morning and afternoon drive, Beck and Limbaugh live, Hannity on delay, Levin on slight delay.

Progressive talker's LMA was taken over by a Catholic outfit almost one year to this day.
AM talker still in existence had the likes of Ingraham, Ramsey, Dobbs and Savage on its sister station, which previously had the progressive talk format. All but Dobbs went to the FM when the AM went Fox Sports (though it kept Jim Rome).
FM talker had Beck the first two years and nosedived when Beck went back to his former home. Swapped Fox Sports for Savage, Ingraham and company earlier this year. Also carried Mancow, Dan Patrick and Miller (Dennis, not Stephanie).

Talk does not seem to do well on a marginal signal.

The FM that died yesterday was a rim shot. The station that went Fox Sports about this time is a Class IV AM and doesn't even cover the boundries of inside the beltway at night with a centrally located stick. The Progressive station had a poor night signal and the day signal had ingress problems during critical hours.

That left the heritage and best signal AM with traditional talk as of yesterday. And even it is an anomaly. It's one of the few non 50kw stations that is always in the top 5 in the 12+ beauty contest and does peak at #1 periodically. However, it's night signal is not able to be heard in some portions of the market (It's 5 kw 24/7 with a 6 tower DA at night.) although in the overall market, they have pretty good penetration. They are live and local mornings and afternoon, but syndicated the rest of the day. Morning guy has been in town since 64. In that slot since about 79. At the station the whole time except for a three year sabbatical at a competitor in the mid 70's. Afternoon guy has been in town since the mid 70's except for a short time when he went to KDKA in the mid 90's. At the station, except for the KDKA trip since the mid to late 80's. And it's the only station that has a news team except for the public stations owned by the University and a modest news department at NABCO. So it basically has a monopoly on radio news.

But every other station that has done talk in the market have had severe signal handicaps and all had second or lower tier hosts.
