FNX self hate?

My former employee is doing a jock free weekend and this is how they're selling it. Their DJ's are a waste of money? They are telling me that their jocks on the air are nothing more than blah blah blah? I worked there. The blah blah blah happens Monday through Friday. Us lowly weekend jocks were barely allowed to talk to begin with. If they want less blah blah blah they shouldn't start with the part timers.

My questions:

What message does this send to the jocks and the audience?

If they think their part timers are this bad then why have them on the payroll at all?

Most special weekends concentrate on the music. All 80s, no commercials, a to z, etc. Is it really a good idea to say that "no jocks" is something special for the audience to get excited about? What about next weekend, is it going to go back to sucking because of the return of the blah blah blah?

Does FNX distinguish itself from WBOS by essentially becoming just like WBOS?

If you are a part timer, do you see this as the writing on the wall? Are you as good as fired?

I don't get it.

I heard this and have a feeling it was done tongue and cheek. Perhaps when the PPM comes to town it would be a good test to see what the tune out is. Honestly though if you hate your "ex-employer" so much why do you listen? You sound like a dude who got dumped by some dumb chick who tells his buddies "I'm better off without her" then stalks her and knows everything she is doing. Try this, get some part time hours at another station and forget about 'FNX.

Here's another question. Isn't this goof on WBOS a little too "inside baseball" for the listener? Do you think they "get it" or do you think that it looks like FNX is insulting it's own staff?

I don't know everything that goes on over there anymore. I heard this when I was driving this weekend and the person I was with thought it was weird. I did too.

You are absolutely right. It is way too "inside baseball" for the average listener. If I had no idea of the market and stumbled upon their website and heard this on-air I would think it was a knock at their staff. Which of course leads me to this question...does FNX really think there is anything to gain with this?

Seriously, I found this weekend's promotion on FNX quite odd. Yesterday, I even heard Snow Patrol's "Shut Your Eyes," which WBOS plays in pretty heavy rotation, but I haven't heard on FNX until this weekend. If anything, FNX should be going after WBCN more and leave WBOS alone.

Well Chow I have posted on other topics here, I have in no way not been "constantly" posting about FNX. That's just incorrect. I had problems over there and have criticized them here. Even sometimes in long winded posts. To you, that's a problem. I don't see it as a problem. I had a bone to pick with the PD and I tried to talk to him about it. He laughed me out of his office. His "open door" policy is a flat out lie. He was disrespectful and I didn't want to work in a place like that so I quit. That doesn't mean that if i make a comment here that I'm a stalker who still "know everything that's going on there" and it doesn't equate to me being some kind of scorned ex boy friend. I turned on the radio, heard this ridiculous promotion and thought I would see what other people thought.

Say what you will Chow, I've looked at some of your comments. You're the FNX apologist, oddly supportive for a guy who "wishes" he worked there. So what's the difference? I've ignored post after post about FNX for the past few months. The one time I choose to comment you try to negate anything I say by claiming I'm the scorned ex boyfriend, you tell me to get a job, you tell me to speak to the PD when I already did and you somehow imply that I am not capable of dialing a phone. You talk about anything but the fact that this promotion was stupid and lacked logic or even a goal. I would have said the same thing if I heard it on another station. So try to read the words I am writing and spend less time making snap judgments about me and calling me anmes. You don't know anything about me.

And quit telling me to send people demos, I have a job. Got it? Read it and comprehend it: I have a job.

And if the PD has a problem with how the weekend jocks are doing maybe he should take your advice and pick up a phone and talk to them. Giving them the weekend off is not going to make anyone reflect on anything but the fact that they lost a paycheck so FNX could make an inside joke aimed at WBOS. If anything it should make them send out resume's because they aren't valued could be a click away from being replaced by a computer in a cost cutting move. A cost cutting move not because they should be finding ways to "do it better".

I heard a CHR station in upstate NY do something similar a few years ago (not to go after a competitor, though). They called it a "Cut the shhhh Weekend". The promos were funny and there was no sense of taking any value off the jocks.

By the way, how do you know the jocks weren't paid for the weekend?

ERP - At this point this conversation can only get ugly and I really don't have much desire to play he said/she said game. I'm glad you have a job and I'll never suggest sending another demo. Is your job in the radio industry, if so can I forward you a demo to get your PD. As for being an FNX apologist I'm sorry but I have loved that station since it's inception. I'm in my 40's and most of my musical influences were from the station, there was a point where I wouldn't listen to any other station and bought some bad cassette tapes because of FNX. I still "wish" I could get my foot in the door over there, I think I could provide some musical insight a lot of the younger jocks miss. I have sent a demo to Keith Dankin three times and never heard anything. You may be right about the open door policy being closed. However I still listen and have enjoyed some of the new stuff they are doing including the special weekends. My favorite was when they did the dead rock stars or when they were going to die. That was pretty funny.

I don't actually "know" that. But they're pretty frugal so it's an educated guess.

No offense, but if in your cover letter you said things like "I think I could provide some musical insight a lot of the younger jocks miss", you're not going to get hired...anywhere. Or maybe you're just not what they are looking for, and there's nothing wrong with that.

and remember, your demo is sitting on the top of a pile of mail the PD gets and it may indeed never be opened. Especially when it is sent when there is no job posting. As a PD, I can tell you that it gets tossed on the demo crate and opened when there is a need to open it.

pretty funny stream about fnx's theme weekend.........they've been doing them for years, one of the first in the market to do so, and they're often created to not only drive the tsl, but to sell to advertisers as well for sponsorships. A nice and effortless means of building the NTR stream. While fnx has often themed the weekend to poke fun at the competition, they've also provided the listener with a focused playlist that should entertain for 72 hours..........

...let 'em have fun with it without analyzing it........that's just good clean radio.......

Telling any prospective employer of his failings probably isn't the way to get a job in ANY industry. They already know they have needs, which is why they are interviewing you in the first place. The best idea is just to present what you bring to the table, and let them read, or hear, between the lines.
