For Those Who May Have Missed the Flip...

blah, blah, blah, "we listened to you"? Really, because I didn't want country music.

Rob, have another drink. The station we are talking about is WRUF-FM in Gainesville. Remember, legendary Rock 104, now lame Country.....

hearing the old sound of ROCK 104 makes me sad. The PD did a bad thing at flipping to country. I hope their ratings go down.

The "PD" was the OM, Harry Guscott. Great guy and probably had no idea this bombshell was being dropped. I'm sure the suits have it all figured out...............

Rob click on the link http://www.cflradio.net/sounds_of_cflradio.htm#Flip from Rock to Country

Once you are on the webapge, scroll all the way down near the bottom. Look for WRUF-FM 103.7 Gainesville and you will see two audio clip icons. The first one is a very short air-check from 1991 while the second one is the announcement from UF Director of Mass Media, Randy Wright, giving the approximate 4 minute introduction to the change from active rock to country. The two icons are a little difficult to see at first, but keep looking. They are there.

I'm not privy to all the logistics and reasoning behind Harry Guscott's departure, but I'm fairly confident he simply retired after 39-years with WRUF. The decision to change format did not come from Harry nor the current PD/OM (assuming they have one). This decision was made by Randy Wright, UF, and a consulting firm which presented "research" showing the market wanted another country outlet.

I seem to remember this was jocked by students at the campus, is this true?

The syndicated Lex and Terry show was on during morning drive. The rest of the day students were on-air till around 11PM, and it was completed automated overnight from what I had observed.

The word consultant has been mentioned a lot lately.

I looked up the word “consultant.” There are two main nouns that define it and they are advisor and expert. No surprises there. These are professionals just as there are financial advisors, politicians, lawyers, doctors – you name it- who are experts in their fields but they all have one thing in common. They are human and their recommendations don’t always have a 100% success rate.

I often wonder if owners ever discuss heritage or brand or history to these people. I wonder too what the response would be. Probably along the lines of that was then and this is now. Forget building on what you got. Blow it up and follow our advice. If things don’t work out, consultants probably can use all the tools at their disposal to say either the client didn’t follow all the guidelines or the market/tastes changed etc. etc. etc. You have to wonder where the accountability is especially when mistakes cost people their livelihood and displace and anger lots of listeners.

Beyond a heritage station in Gainesville, things like this happen all the time – wrapped around what the public supposedly wants. Funny thing is WRUF-FM got high ratings meaning – duh – people were getting what they wanted and supported the station.

This isn’t to rag on the profession of consultants so please understand that. There are many success stories too as many flips prove to be the right decision. But what I think happened here and what happens elsewhere is the pitch for that better return. It’s one of many things that ruin radio in so many are looking for that quick fix.

To end on a positive note, pencils have erasers. I suppose if this flip doesn’t work out, maybe they will be Rock 104 again. No one can say with certainty that can’t happen. Look at what CBS Radio did a few years ago in NYC - admitting their mistakes. Maybe a new “pitchman” will make the case Rock 104 needs to go back to its roots to get that better return on investments….….

Yes, everything above is true. The truth is that Rock104's ratings had sagged over the years and, while still acceptable for a class A in Gainesville, probably weren't up to the expectations of a C1 that should be covering the whole market. There could be a lot of reasons for the errosion of the numbers: People's changing tastes & more competition being chief among them. The fact that Marion County has grown faster than Alachua county is also a contributer as 2/3 of the total population now lives in a fringe coverage area for WRUF, compared to about 1/3 twenty-five years ago. 15 years ago, there was no competition from WNDD or WHHZ, so one could argue that WRUF actually held its own quite well in the face of the market changes. Aside from wondering if the idea to switch formats might have been a bit hasty, the thing that shocked so many readers of this board was the choice of a replacement format. It doesn't seem like the informed decision of someone familiar with the peculiarities of this market or of WRUF-FM's coverage. That said, I'd be delighted, if a bit confused, to discover that WRUF-FM actually does well in the next year. Either that, or some other decision will be made and the format will flip again in the next couple of years.

how can it be sad if you don't even know what station you're talking about?

Crazy to hear the 1991 aircheck. The jock was Ernie Kapanke, who became the promotions director for Planet Radio in Jacksonville and later, 99X Atlanta. Wish there was more audio from back in the day....and hopefully none from my atrocious morning show, The Dawn Patrol, when I went by Rick Allen.

Hey Rick!

Long time, no hear! Last time I saw you was 15 years ago when I was in Charlotte and you were programming 'the X' in Greenville. Remember?

I have several hours' worth of tape from the market in the early-mid 1990s. Storm/Nick/Chris and Briton Jon on WKTK, WMMZ-93, "Proud Country" WTRS, Gator Country GC-101, KISS 105 when they were still 3,000 watts on 105.5, WTMC-1290 when it was still a music station, etc. Plus 99.9 out of Dayona, both as I-100 and then "The New 99.9FM" with JJ Duling as PD and on-air afternoons. Unfortunately, the tapes are all in storage up in Minnesota. Everything I have with me, I've posted on my website. It was a great time to be in North Florida radio!

Drew, hard to believe that was so many years ago. The X was my first PD gig (I left middays at KTK to go there)...had a blast making lots of mistakes and learning on the job. After that, it was to WXSR Tally, Planet Jax, 98ROCK and Star 95.7 Tampa, G105 Raleigh, and finally DC101. Time sure has flown.

I remember listening to Lazzzzzer Hot Z93 back in the day. I100 - the boss of the beach. 20 minutes of spots, guaranteed, every hour during spring break.

Hope you are doing well, man!

Drew - I would love to hear all the WTMC air-checks you have... Is there any chance I can get copies?

Actually, that was quite generous. The station made 50% of its annual revenue at spring break. I counted 37 minutes of spots one afternoon. We played one song and 6 minutes of spots. Repeat until done......

I worked at the Flamethrower, Hot Rockin I-100. Who wants to hear an aircheck?

What air-shift, air-name and dates were you with "The Hot Rockin', Flame Throwin 1 100"? I'd like to hear your air-checks.
