Consultant's extremely narrow "focus groups" that's what. How in the hell do you expect only a small group of people say what thousands of people may want to hear and even asked this small group said that they are tired of the same old thing too. No you possibly can't please everyone, however piss off enough people and you won't have any listeners. Why doesn't the lister make you succees? First the listen to your station, second they may even shop at your advertisers and buy their products where you in turn get more ads to run on you station and last but not least, they may even be some of your advirtisers who listen.
Yes some stores can and do cater to "the masses" that said for example our store manager came from Mississippi and at her store golf items were not a big seller, but at our store they are huge sellers so she now has to order more than she would have at her previous store. The point is that you have to talor your product line for who you are trying to serve. Yes for some that other Steely Dan tune may be a turn off, but I will bet you this; most people will remember it whether they like it personally or not. This debate/argument/discussion will undoubtably go on forever. Granted you cannot base an entire format around the "obscure" songs and I have never advocated such a format, however, if you strategically place some of the other songs in your play list or instead of the same song everytime say Steely Dan Hey Ninetee comes up simply replace it with another Steely Dan tune somewhere along the line enough people will notice they will like your station and then in turn will telll their friends about it. Ultimately that's what you want them to do listening to your station and not the competition.
