For those who still think 107.9 plays oldies

Come on Dude..listener...listeners you know what I meant wOOt.How do we really know how much variety the listeners like??? Everybody is doing the same thing. What blueprint do we have for failure??

Allen

Consultant's extremely narrow "focus groups" that's what. How in the hell do you expect only a small group of people say what thousands of people may want to hear and even asked this small group said that they are tired of the same old thing too. No you possibly can't please everyone, however piss off enough people and you won't have any listeners. Why doesn't the lister make you succees? First the listen to your station, second they may even shop at your advertisers and buy their products where you in turn get more ads to run on you station and last but not least, they may even be some of your advirtisers who listen.

Yes some stores can and do cater to "the masses" that said for example our store manager came from Mississippi and at her store golf items were not a big seller, but at our store they are huge sellers so she now has to order more than she would have at her previous store. The point is that you have to talor your product line for who you are trying to serve. Yes for some that other Steely Dan tune may be a turn off, but I will bet you this; most people will remember it whether they like it personally or not. This debate/argument/discussion will undoubtably go on forever. Granted you cannot base an entire format around the "obscure" songs and I have never advocated such a format, however, if you strategically place some of the other songs in your play list or instead of the same song everytime say Steely Dan Hey Ninetee comes up simply replace it with another Steely Dan tune somewhere along the line enough people will notice they will like your station and then in turn will telll their friends about it. Ultimately that's what you want them to do listening to your station and not the competition.

My personal opinion is you can play 50-80's all on one station if it is seperated correctly and you are very careful with texture and such.I get request for Chapel of Love & I get request for Talk It Over by Grayson Hugh.Early 60's to late 80's but its all about the sound of the song.I see no problem playing both tunes on one station...

Allen

If you're going to do that then you might as well play 90s and a few hits from today. Then it would be a Jack fm. WNCT should just turn to a Jack Fm or go back to oldies. None of this psuedo disco crap.

OK then. I'm coming to your store on Monday. Even though it's 90 degrees in North Carolina now, I would like to buy snowskiing equipment. Will you have it waiting for me in sporting goods? And I want a large selection to choose from!

What? You won't? Why not? Aren't you trying to serve me, the customer???

If you don't see the point now, I really think I'm giving up.

If they would pick the pseudo-disco (retro CHR/Rhythmic) format and stick with it, it would work. They're more like a pseudo-oldies right now. They want to hold on to the glory days and listeners that Oldies 107.9 had but at the same time play 80s tunes. Sorry... can't do that. Again, can't be everything to everyone!

I see your point, it is however possible that the store may not have changed out their seasonal displays yet (they should have, but for the sake of arguing let's say they didn't). What I was getting at was the fact that what she thought wouldn't work in one market, did work here thus she had to change her thinking. Another example is the Wal-Mart stores in other countries don't sell the same products that the do in the U.S. due to cultural and religious reasons. Now if we apply the radio theory that you talk about then all stores would sell the exact same things no matter what country the store is in. This wouldn't be good at all. Now Wal-Mart wants to get customers into their stores so they research their area and competition and see what they are stocking, we order either the same things or even different things that are similar to attract the customer to our store rather than going to the competition. Another way we do it is with customer service. I'm sure our store manager would do everything possible to get you your skiing gear in May even if she has to order it from another Wal-Mart store to keep you shopping at our store here. Not to mention there's our website and the site to store option.... See we give you options. This is what the requests give your station and listeners a choice on a crouded radio dial. Yes thay can get the same songs from your competition, but because you offer them something a little different than your competition the just may listen longer to your station and not tune elsewhere. Again I definately don't know it all and I don't claim to I'm just stating my thoughts.

What you're talking about is completely different. It's more along the lines of why WCBS-FM can play 80s tunes and get away with it. New York City and eastern North Carolina are two completely different markets.

My point is that you have to try to please the greatest number of people at once. That can't be done by trying to be everything at once... throwing everything at the wall and hoping it all sticks.

I'm going back to what I said earlier. A request pleases ONE listener. Tested songs please MANY listeners.

Easy guys we have all got opinions.I think its great we are all passionate enough to get
passionate.I have learned alot from everyone on the board. We have our good days and bad days.Today wasn't a great day for me but in the grand scheme of life everything is gonna be fine.I was cutting liners for baseball for the AM in the FM studio and accidently left the mic in program and audition.I've done approx 1400 liners for baseball since Feburary 22nd and have never done this before.I caught my mistake after 16 seconds.Stuff happens...It's not my first mistake and it won't be my last. The good thing was somebody was listening and heard it and I'll be more careful tommorrow.I'm sure those listening to 107.9 were wondering why was I talking about Pirate baseball and 1070.We are all human, we love radio,
and the sun will rise tommorrow.I think we all have good ideas we all just from different schools of thought. If we all had the same opinions we would have no forum....

Allen

That's not as bad as the time I accidentally left the Shortcut in program as I took down a contest winner's address and all... even until the end I had no idea until a call came in and told me...

I do think we have some really good discussion here. Nice to get a good balance of opinions going on.

When you do live radio with actual humans mistakes happen. That to me is part of what I love about it...There was only one perfect man and they killed him...
Allen

Amen! Allen. When you have real people on air, that makes the whole thing special. The one on one "theatre of the mind" aspect of radio is why I love it so much.

Firecop when you come towards Greenville again lets get together and eat some grub. Its been too long since I've seen you man....

Allen

Allen, I still have family in Kinston. For sure. When I'm back that way, this summer I hope, we will go together. It has been a long time.

Later,

Kris
