For WHOM the bell tolls...? It tolls for Dean-o

wow. 40 years without a break in broadcast service and thanks to "tough times" and "belt tightening," Dean Rogers is on the street.

i'd use the phrase "what the hell are they thinking?" but that would require me to give anyone involved in this one the possible stipulation that he/she/them are possessed of an actual working brain which could produce thought.

Dean has not worked at a lot of places. very few for long periods of time -

WPNO (iirc) in Auburn, WCSH (which became WYNZ - he worked for 4 different owners there - Maine Broadcasting, Eastman, Buckley and then Saga) in Portland and then to WHOM.

someone scoop this guy up. message me if you need his contact details.

Erie

Take off the Glasses...Your SUPERMAN!!!

Good Luck DEAN!
Joe

I'm sure Mike Sambrook and/or Tim Moore and/or Herb Ivey of Citadel are excited to learn Chuck that you question whether or not they have an actual working brain when these are very painful and difficult decisions for any management to make, including yours. I am sure that they are not taken as likely as you seem to convey.

doesn't surprise me anymore.... who's going to take his place? I imagine WHOM would want something on their "morning show" since mid days and afternoons are live.

Why don't you email WHOM's PD why they still haven't flipped to CHR?

maybe they will now...or start pitching their music

Seriously....while that truly sucks for Dean, this had turned into one of the funniest threads in a long time.

BTW, Adbuyer, the phrase is "taken as lightly," not "taken as likely." Now go buy some ads, will ya? These jocks don't pay themselves.

slightly off topic: not the first time this has come up - if i have something to post, i'll do it myself as you see here. thanks.

and in regards to Erie's comments - you gotta wonder why you take out the franchise player, but we all know times are tough in the business. with deference to Dean's experience and roots in the community, there had to be other possible ways to achieve whatever the target number was.

A sad day for Portland radio! Makes me sick, I don't even know if I can drink this one away! Oh, okay, I've popped a little Carolan's in my coffee (Baileys is too expensive in these hard times). It's just not the same. Just like mornings won't be the same on WHOM. You mean Herb and Lori couldn't have taken a paycut? Is Robin Ivy and her horoscope show really that important to keep?

Whatever happens, we'll be waiting to hear those dulcet tones from the Hadlock PA system come spring! Best of luck to you, Dean!

Stay classy, One City Center!

Cheers,
OldPort Wino

Your right it is a sad day in Radio........WTF was Moore thinking....wait does moore even think of just spin the wheel of death!

This news makes me very sad.

Dean is one of the classiest guys you will ever meet. I had the pleasure of working with him 15 years ago. I certainly hope a better opportunity comes his way -- although it is tough to say in this economy.

Two points, in bulleted form:

1.) Radio is really starting to break my heart.
2.) I had a rant about Robin Ivy, but whatever. Who am I to judge (I'm sure there are people who hate my show)?

But I am grouchy today. I feel let down by broadcasting in general. It's a profit based business, for sure, but it'd be nice to see management folks take some big risks that didn't involve letting go talented staffers. It'd be nice if management were as forward thinking as JParsons and knew how to use the web to their advantage. Instead, they cower in offices debating keeping part timers who have reached the lofty heights of 8 dollars an hour.

Talented full timers (and half timers) move away and out of the biz.

And our listeners, left in the proverbial dark, buy iPods. Not because they want an iPod... but because we haven't given them a reason to not want an iPod.

Dean Rogers, Teddy McKay, Dominic got let go. For what? To keep a 3-person morning show? To keep somebody's ex-wife employed? To further discourage those of us who really love what we do, but every single day wonder how much longer we get do it? I hope all you a$$holes who pull the money strings face what you've done to these 3 men--get f***ed over.

Sad indeed, but not surprising. I'm sure no matter who replaces Dean it will be for a fraction of what he was being paid. If you can't raise the bridge, lower the river. Pretty soon, there'll be nothing but bottom feeders vying for these positions being vacated by veterans. Perhaps I shouldn't be so harsh on folks looking for work. Especially since the term "bottom feeders" is a much more apt description of management.

You know, Tim Moore did pitch WKSQ's music when he was PD there. I bought and returned Toto IV to DeOrsey's because I thought I got a bad cassette!

I've never worked for a station that pitched up their music, but I remember seeing some CD players that could be set to play 2% fast like the Denon 951s.
I suspect WRKO may have done it back in the day (70's)...I remember being a teenager and hearing those songs later on FM and thinking they didn't sound right, but couldn't put my finger on why.
Could turntables be set fast? Maybe changing the idler wheel? Could cart decks be tricked into this?
And of course the $64,000 question: Why would you do this? To cram a few more spots per hour?

I hadn't realized that Teddy was also let go. I just got off the phone with him and he's doing okay. He will still be around Citadel - weekends, remotes and most importantly, studio access.

not sure if all were aware, but his house burned to the ground a few months back and they were just getting ready to move back in a few weeks down the road.

so tell me again - how was this broadcast media consolidation thing a good thing?

longing for the good old days when a lost job meant you now had a 1-in-18 chance of finding another gig in Portland.
