forget Hits 94. what's up with 'ZTK?

Do last week's election results suggest an Oldies format?

One witty co-conspirator who didn't, personally, want to post here, just Emailed me this format change suggestion: "Peace Oldies." The first ten titles played would be:

Soldier Boy-Shirelles
Billy, Don't Be a Hero-Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods
War-Edwin Starr
Give Peace a Chance
Have You Ever Seen the Rain-CCR
One Tin Soldier-Coven
Blowin In The Wind---
For What it's Worth
Imagine
Peace Train

more for the Peace format...

"Put a Little Love in Your Heart" Jackie DeShannon
"Get Together" Youngbloods
"What the World Needs Now"/"Abraham, Martin & John" Tom Clay

Personally, the problem with that "peace oldies" format playlist snippet is that you take the same stale protest songs (which are really good songs, just aired ALL THE TIME by oldies stations) and give them MORE AIR TIME!

Whomever is programming this thing should branch out a little more, IMO. Have your core hits that everyone knows and loves, but once you get that up and running, start digging. Dig through the stacks (and if you don't have stacks, find some somewhere). The 60s and 70s had a lot more "peace" music than just Cat Stevens, Simon & Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, Three Dog Night, and Buffalo Springfield. Don't be afraid to branch off into the lighter side of psychedellia. Give Zappa a spin every now and then. And for pete's sake, please limit the "American Pie" spins to 2 per week. Oldies 93 got to the point where I'd turn them on during the 3:00 hour, and sure enough, hear American Pie. Every day. See: "Good Song but Overplayed."

Granted, the triad is a pretty conservative market in terms of radio - they want to hear stuff that brings back memories. But I think that if well done, slipping in a few songs every now and then from outside the oldies core could definately cement a place for this station, not just with the baby boomers, but a lot of the indie/liberal college types, as well as people who simply like the music of the time. For example: "Ziggie Stardust" era David Bowie: Starman & Five Years would be right at home on an oldies station. A lot of boomers have (in my experience) heard a lot of these artists, but not in decades. Bring back something to the air that makes the listener stop what they're doing, point to the radio, and smile. Then you'll have a great station. Every decade had its monster hits, and its minor hits. Radio seems to have forgotten about everything but the Monster Chart Toppers.

And that's just the music side. The personalities need to be tight, on-point, and every time they talk, it should be something worthwile. Noting angers listeners more than idle babble. Sure, people say they want "less talk, more rock." But a well-placed comment trumps idle chatter before a commercial any day. Find an airstaff that loves to be there (and loves the music), and you've got part two of a 3 part combo.

Then all you have to do is market the hell out of the station and you should be set.

My 2 Cents (which seems to be more like $3.50).

Set your clocks everyone. Dittohead says ZTK starts stunting today. Dittohead says they flip to oldies on Thursday. Dittohead has already posted their first hour of music here. Dittohead is really wired in so we know he's right on. Thanks Dittohead. Please tell us what is going to happen in Raleigh next.

Stunting with what? I tuned in earlier this afternoon, and ZTK doesn't sound like it's stunting; it sounds like their regular NT lineup...

Also, does anyone know what kind of stunt Curtis used (if any) on Y102 when it flipped from Star-FM?

No stunting when Y102.9 launched. Music, airstaff, custom jingles, and imaging
fired up at 12Noon. Notified clients and gave them Y102.9 logo radios.

It was a novel idea, taken from Nike...JUST DO IT! No jerking people around.

Bill/Y102.9

No stunting was done on 101.1 when it flipped from country to what it is today (or at least this hour...) back in 2004. I remember I heard someone announce they would be changing one afternoon while I just so happened to have the station on. They gave the whole "we will miss it all...etc etc etc" spill. Then that night these guys (who sounded like they were right out of college, by the way they were goofing off. fun show they had tho..) talked some, played some tunes then signed off. Country played overnight. Then the next morning it was talk.

simple.

maybe this is how it's going to play out again for Curtis.

I think Curtis has bought WSJS, but I think the WZTK rumor was planted to throw everyone off of Hitz 94. IF WZTK does anything, I bet it will be after the 1st of the year.

I don't see why WZTK would have to change to anything if they own WSJS. They don't really have much of a signal in WS, so WSJS is a nice compliment to their News/Talk family. All makes sense to me. And, judging from the posts on this board by their Consultant from McVey, they sound like they're pretty committed to the News/Talk thing. Maybe 101.1 just needs a little sprucing up.

sprucing up?

like getting rid of the am and pm drive shows?

brad and brit are self-indulgent and too silly for the format. handy is like the "old-time pot hour". get a clue, management!

maybe my predictions were wrong; maybe the 1st hour i posted was a joke. i think u have 2 look seriously at the wrong-headedness of the guy who started this thread. he laid a giant turd and then moved on...maybe to his job at wendy's (try the frescata sandwich, just once...seriously)

What does that make "Ballad Of The Green Berets" by SSgt Barry Sadler? War oldies? My standards station played that one and a medley of military theme songs on Veteran's Day (as observed by government). Sounded great.

As much as I dislike war, I can't stand the musical style of those peace songs.

Did I miss it?

Hi again, it's me, WZTK's consultant.
Did I miss the Oldies format debut?

the stunting begins on tuesday with a countdown clock that will end on thursday...at 5:01 pm on thursday Z101.1 will be born...first song" "Start Me Up"...they're doing the "1,000 in a row" thing with caller 1,000 after the 1,000th song getting 1,000 dollars...pat patterson is am drive and they are heavily courting blade for afternoons...of course, all this is subject to change now that i have put it on the web, but that's the deal...

What kind of consultant reveals his client's trade secrets on a board like this? They should get a refund!

I doubt you will see much change in ZTK. It can make an great combo sell with WSJS. You might see Hannity appear at 101.1 at some point in time.

Hey, cheer up.
THIS may help.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, THE BEATLES:" http://www.hollandcooke.com/xbeatles1.wav

Go ahead, play it on-air.
They recorded it for radio, for just that purpose, way-back-when.

Play it even if you're a Talk station.
Heck, play it ESPECIALLY if you're a Talk station.
But I warn you: If you do, you'll start a rumor that you're going-music.
:)
