Format Change Coming To 95.5 PGC?

Kilamanjero i know that you have this thing about Micheal Saunders but the situation at PGC is bigger than him. CBS Radio in New York made the choice at the beginning of 2009 to make WPGC straight up urban. The station is very much like WVEE in Atlanta or WKYS or WERQ in Baltimore which are all three very much urban stations. I agree with you that the station should be like it was a hybrid Rhythmic/Urban with some white air talent but they had the chance to do that when Sam Rodgers hired Rob Scoripo to be OM/PD in 2009 and they made the choice to go urban and Saunders was no where around at this time. WPGC sounds like it does because of the choices made in New York Micheal Saunders is a well respected Urban PD WJLB,WMXD,WWPR,WPEG all big time FM stations all urban whom were all succesful with him as PD. He is an urban PD if they wanted to go Rhythmic they should have hired a PD to match that format and that would not be Micheal Saunders in D.C. or Orlando Victor Starr has more Rhythmic PD expirence than Micheal Saunders. If you go to the CBS radio web site WPGC is called Urban it was Rhythmic so there you go. Go to there sister stations web site in Hartford that is what WPGC should sound like. However WPGC is #1 or #2 in the 18-34 demo and does well in these demos 25-54 and 18-49 so it will most likely continue to sound like it does now money talks and it still makes money.

Well, according to the July overall PPM, WPGC is now the lowest rated urban in the DC market. They might be doing alright in the 18-34, but I doubt in the overall 18-49 or 25-54 they are doing that well at all. One of the reasons why they did so well in the past with the overall 18-49 and 25-54 was the reliance on actual DC market hits, B-side cuts, and actual R&B/neo-soul songs that would be heard on the UACs like WHUR or WMMJ during the key dayparts like middays, early afternoons, and late nights. They actually competing with the UACs while competing with WKYS for an audience. I don't know what the hell they are doing these days other than chasing some undefined group with no real strategy. The ratings are the tell-tale sign of this chaos.

What music should WPGC be playing to put them back up at the position they once held?

The PPM`s are up and down look at WPGC `s ratings for June ok they were lowest rated for July but again look at June. Again New York is the blame PGC sounds like KYS none of the D.C. UAC `s play hip-hop except this new format on Magic 102.3 and that is no longer considered an UAC. In the end billing will tell the tale about 955 WPGC last year the station was the number 2 biller in the 9th ranked D.C. market lets see where it bills at the end of this year. WPGC still makes money and it is still the top urban biller in D.C. and 2009 was a PPM year and it still was the number 2 biller. Making money is all that CBS New York cares about if it stops they will be more than happy to flip WPGC and that would be a tragic loss for D.C. ask people in the smaller Baltimore market if they miss V-103 and they will tell you YES.

Ask HFS fans if CBS cares about fanbase and listener approval. They skewed the numbers to put the blame on ratings when there were far more listeners than just the Annapolis area. Tradition? History? Community? Doesn't matter a bit....shred it up and print a new dollar bill out of it. Angry fans? CBS loves making fans seem stupid and trivial.

MAGIC 102.3's playlist looks Urban AC to me. Its a sign of the times. It's 2010 and Urban ACs should be playing majority late 80s, 90s (R&B/some Older Hip-Hop) and Currnet R&B music now like MAGIC is doing.

What i mean is that Magic(D.C.) is not a standard based golden oldies UAC like WHUR,Magic(Baltimore),WDAS(Philly) i was born in 1974 so iam cool with the format on Magic(D.C.). People born in the 40`s and 50`s might not like that new form of UAC.

@ Martin Mac WPGC should be a cross between Hot 995 and WKYS a CHR/Urban.

Exactly, and they should also bring back the "Love Talk & Slow Jams" show from 10PM-Midnight (let "The Coolout" be from Midnight-2AM). I think if they were to combine with aforementioned cross of musical choices from WIHT & WKYS then they would be able to bounce back in no time.

Going CHR/URBAN MIGHT work for WPGC the PPM has changed everything the biggest loser in them has been Urban/Hip-Hop radio Urban AC has done well. Again lets see where WPGC bills for 2010 at the end of the year that will tell alot about the future of the format.

The funny thing is in the past with WPGC was when they were dayparting that they were able to give WHUR & WMMJ a run for their money during 6AM-2PM. There were times when WPGC was beating both UACs from 10PM to midnight as well with the nightly relationship show. WPGC has the capability to take on the UACs, WKYS, and WIHT via dayparting, but this generalized stuff they are doing these days is what has left them very vulnerable. I think if CBS were to take that CHR/Urban approach via dayparting the station playlist so that it has a specific group of listenership during each daypart then they would develop some loyalty to the station. The end result will be an increase in overall station ratings across the board.

As Donnie Simpson said it best in the past, "I'm not the star of WPGC, the music is."

@Fatlady Skip Dillard left on his own accord he went from the 9th radio market to the number 1 market(New York) WBLS a better job. Rob Scorpio was thrown under the bus he is a master of the CHR/Urban format he was feuding with Donnie Simpson and his son at the time. Saunders will probably be thrown under the bus but to continue to change OM/PD`s every 6 months is a sure way for failure and not the answer. Things are not the same PPM again has changed the radio world they have to pick a format and run with it and as long as it makes money leave it alone. And leave the OM/PD alone as well. Billing will tell the tail about WPGC and its future again ask Baltimore CBS flipped V-103(Baltimore :() and that market has never been the same(as far as Urban radio goes) I hope that D.C. does not get the same thing done to it.

If people love it and advertisers dont CBS will flip it like refried beans no matter how many people protest. The when, and if,they bring it back somewhere else they'll swear they did it for loving fans.....and proceed to ignore them immediately afterwards.

V103 Don't you mean X105.7?

@htowler i do not know how old you are but no i do mean V-103(WXYV 102.7). That station was on the air from 1977-1997 way before WERQ was a thought. WERQ came around in 1991 V-103 was owned in the end by Infinity Broadcasting now CBS Radio when it was flipped in 1997 after 20 years of playing black music. X105.7 was also owned by the same company and used the old V call letters when it was flipped in early 2003, but 1057 never had the impact on Urban radio in Baltimore that V-103 had(Randy Dennis,Frank Ski,Tim Watts,Jean Ross,Sandi Mallory,Lorenzo Ice Tea Thomas)all worked at V-103 Baltimore.

So on the more important target audiences how is PGC/KYS doing? How is Lil Mo doing against the veteran Easystreet? How is the midday battle? What about nights?
