Also you are entitled to your opinion but the station sounds better its commerical radio which in this country is not what it once was not just PGC but indusrty wide the 1970`s early 80`s era of not hearing the same music in the east that you hear in the mid- west(as an example) are over most station`s are carbon copies of each other. The PD job posting has been removed from CBS`s job site so i would expect Jason Kidd to be named PD very soon. Kidd needs a Music Director to help him with the playlist but in commercial radio these days very rarely will you have a station that continues to always break new music(you hear the same 10 songs on most station`s all over the country) that`s just the radio today .

Thank you for entitling me to my own opinion. I grant you the same respect. Therefore we definately agree that radio is not what it was in its hey. Where we disagree is with respect to PGC sounding better. In my opinion it sounds one step away from what it was as Classy 95 and that was a hot mess! I wish this new Kid well, however I believe chasing Hot 995 ill advised. Any success PGC has doing so will only result in both of those stations becomming middle of the pack unimportant stations. I doubt that PGC will have much success in doing so, however. One of the only useful things a consultant ever told me when I was programming was to stay in my lane. Do what you do and do it well all day everyday. I am not sure who PGC's P1 is anymore. Judging from their ratings of late, no one at PGC seems to know either. Perhaps the new GM and PD will have a clue and they will pick a lane.
One word PPM is why they are chasing Hot 995 which in the diary era was an also ran in the ratings with PPM its a powerhouse. Urban WAS a powerhouse in DC with PPM sadly its not anymore.kilamanjero said:anatharadiorefugee said:donta1974 said:I think that you are correct it does mean nothing as far as WPGC goes. Well, hopefully the new management will remember that the P1 that made WPGC a market heavy weigh was the core 18-49 whom listens to urban music. I do agree it is ill conceived to chase after Hot 99.5 when it's obvious PGC's real competition are WKYS, Majic, and WHUR.

Urban is still a powerhouse otherwise WHUR (#7) and WMMJ (#8) wouldn't be in the top 10. However, there is a way for them to challenge both Hot 99.5 as well as the 2 UACs while staying true to its core mainly black but multicultural 18-49 audience. WPGC already has the billing and cume to be a powerhouse, but have yet to figure out how to musically program themselves in a manner to retain the audience's attention consistently. Dayparting is a major part of it along with figuring out how they can find their niche that retains their core audience while pulling away some of those that enjoy crossover music. It can be done in the PPM era, but they have to stop so heavily relaying on recurrents only to do it. The final piece of that is getting back to spinning local music which attracts the regional audience recognized the station as the Go-Go music station.
They do have good DJ`s from the mid-atlantic region it seems that just about 5 of them are the focus. Rob Scorpio fazed out GO-GO 95 during his short run as PD he moved the mix to 8pm and only to a half hour Micheal Saunders fazed out the mid day mix for Jamz on Demand he is also the one who started the recurrents being used so much J Kidd has just kept it going. We complain on this board but i think what you currently hear is what you will pretty much get imaging, mix show`s,etc. They(CBS) want to pull away from the urban sound not completley but SOME so this is what you will hear. The station is CHR/hybrid i agree hopefully Jason Kidd will be there for a few years as PD he is still doing a good job to me even though i do not agree with everything i give him a B+ as PD. The staff at the station seems to enjoy him as PD from what i hear and the staff at CBS DC likes J Kidd a ton as well so he has a ton of people on his side. The station sounds much better than it did lets keep it 100.quietboy said:I agree on the mix shows on KYS sounding way better. It is sad that things are restrictive with the mix shows on PGC. They have some good djs like Book, Redz, Titan...these kats are dope djs.
So is Home Jams still on PGC? Are they playing any go-go at all? I swear I don't hear any during the day or on the mix shows.
One thing is for sure, they need to keep a PD longer than year for a change. They seriously sound like a station that is trying to find its identity every few months.
We will see so far Rob Scorpio and Micheal Saunders missed your point. True the airstaff is black but do not be surpirsed if a non african american does nights 6pm-10pm. Sunni is from Bosnia she is white-eurpoean not latino.kilamanjero said:There is one problem with this "not too urban" front on WPGC nowadays. Over 95% of their on-air personalities are black so nobody is buying that front at all and Sunni, whom is a mixed race Latina, has working primarily for urban radio stations with the exception of WPOW/Miami. Also the fact that still air an urban gospel show and the Greater Washington Urban League public affairs show along with a couple of other public affairs shows including the one hosted by Guy Lambert, it is obvious to the trained eye that WPGC is still at the core an urban contemporary. WPGC knows 18-49 blacks are their core demographic and won't abandon that at all because their ratings really would suck for sure. CBS Radio New York's suit are controlling some things like who and what they put on right now, but they also know they can't control it too much because what is the point of having a local management team.
Also I don't really have a problem with some pop crossover titles on the playlist because it's good to see 'urban' stations compete with the CHR/Top40 stations. The issues is WPGC needs to remember that chasing to much after Hot will cost them their core audience that has been there since the current inception of WPGC, circa 1987, so don't stray too far from that. Also like Martin Mac said, the local music, classics spins, and new music can be done if one is attentive of dayparting. I think Jason Kidd will realize this one with due time because he wants to see WPGC overall 12+ go up not stagnate or drop further.
