Format Change Coming To 95.5 PGC?

Although I do miss the show, I definitely do agree with him being too old for the format, and I don't expect him to come back. As for the format right now, I definitely understand the crossover thing, but I also believe that their is a certain limit to what songs or how many you add before you don't sound like an urban station. I wanted the rhythmic crossover format more than anyone, but that was in 2009 before the pop scene became so heavily dance influenced. Now it sounds a bit awkward hearing hard dance pop next to slow R&B jams on WPGC. I somewhat enjoy it, but it somewhat disappoints me when I see the core listeners of WPGC reacting to it negatively.

Touching on what kilamanjero said, it seems like some of the core listeners are now starting to feel as if WPGC is all over the place due to the addition of pop songs. From my personal experience, they have a good idea of what's being played over at Hot 99.5, and from what I've seen, some WPGC listeners seem not to like that coming over to 95.5, especially the oldest of the 18-49 crowd. Hopefully my personal experience doesn't reflect all of their core listeners.

I am definitely not against these changes at WPGC, I support it 100%, I'm just worried that WPGC will either lose it's core listeners, or will eventually move to targeting a new group and put 18-49 blacks lower in their priorities. One LMFAO song makes me feel like somewhere out in the DMV, a core listener is going "What is this?" and then they turn to 93.9 because they don't want to hear pop music.

I definitely shouldn't be worrying as much as I am, but I just hope that one day WPGC can make it back to the level of popularity they once had in DC. As we have seen over the past couple of PD's, programming WPGC is not a easy task at all. Hopefully Jason Kidd has a clear outlook on what he wants this station to become. I'm anxious yet excited to see what WPGC will sound like 6-12 months from now.

I would modify my above post, but the time limit is up.

As for Chris Styles, I do think that would be an interesting move. That would definitely help them in their mission of going after Hot 99.5, big time! They would truly sound like a rhythmic at night if they were to do this. I'm not sure how core listeners would feel about that, but I know that many people would change to WPGC from Hot 99.5 to hear that.

Donta1974 and kilamanjero, Ive read what you said and I do remember all of those things. I do find it a bit difficult to believe that WPGC is beating WKYS in 18-34 blacks right now, and I know it's always been a close race, but if they are, hopefully they continue to win over WKYS. The reason I say this is because it's a huge accomplishment to beat WKYS out in that while still going after Hot 99.5 listeners.

Martin Mac i said that WPGC had surpassed WKYS in the overall 18-34 demo (all races) iam not sure about 18-34 blacks only WKYS is probably beating them in that. I never rememeber WPGC being a straight up Urban station until around 2003(it started in 1997) and went full bore in 03 it was always a crossover like now for most of the nineties. The following air talent would have never been at WKYS (Albie Dee, Kristina Kelly(sounds like a white female),Dakohta(white guy),Paco the Hispanic,Chip-Fu(white dude)on the original Simpson WPGC morning show 1993,Rob Scorpio(later the PD) were all at the station in the 90`s. The core has not always been african-americans WKYS,WHUR,WMMJ,V103(Baltimore),Magic(Baltimore) all were way blacker than WPGC could have dreamed of being at that time. WPGC and early WERQ(Baltimore)(91-97) were the only two stations who had white on air talent at that time which is what Rhythmic radio does have crossover air talent not an all black air staff which is why its not a strecth that a white dude will be the new night person Chris Styles or who ever. Jason Kidd has the station where CBS wants it a CHR crossover he is doing a good job. We will see is all that i can say. Again guys PPM has changed the game for PGC if the dairy was still being used PGC would be top 3 in all demo`s if not number 1 with that method but times have changed.

Well, I wouldn't call WPGC a CHR crossover rather an urban-leaning rhythmic. Most CHR stations aren't very community-oriented unless they either rhythmic or urban CHRs.

You got what i was saying though you know what i mean. :)

Wow! WPGC has been very different today than usual. Instead of their usual one "throwback" song (gold record) every 3-4 hours. They have been playing 3-5 throwback songs EVERY HOUR today! Is their something special going on today? The station sounds really great like this!

Somewhat unrelated: AOL Radio's partnership with CBS is being "sunset." I bring that up in this thread because WPGC was one of the first of a handful (and I mean, a handful) of CBS radio stations that was streamed through AOL. Of course, since then, CBS expanded their Internet streaming capabilities, eventually going to play.it and later, StreamTheWorld.

I believe Yahoo is the doing the same with CBS. CBS has shifted to the Radio.com format of streaming.

The problem with the Rane lawsuit is the timing of it the management team that is responsiable for her money situation besides HERSELF no one made her sign her contract iam sure former market manager Sam Rodgers and whatever PD was their at the time are gone. Why file this when you have a BRAND NEW management team in place who had nothing to do with this situation that is the question she could have done this six months or a year ago or longer. Flexx iam sure has always made more money than her for the 11 years that they have been together the original Home Team was Flexx and Nonchalant. We will see how this plays out but over and over again i have seen stuff like this end ugly hopefully this does not end like that i wish her well and good luck.

Notice the 12+ numbers are up.
The monthly PPM for Washington,DC comes out today(7/13/11) so let`s see what they look like, but Jason Kidd(new PD) has to be happy he has been a really good positive force for this station as has Free and a little BET Awards post show hosting(Big Tig and Free hosted) does not hurt either.

Congrats to WPGC for a good June. I have enjoyed following this thread. It's over two years old and always seems to be active. This must be setting some type of R-I record.

True Jay F its funny this thread should be removed because CBS has already said without saying it that their will be no format change here it was just tweeked they have survived the Donnie Simpson situation so let`s keep it moving.

Wow, I just realized, I have been commenting on this thread for two years now, lol!

I believe WPGC is phasing out their 8PM 30 minute mix-show. One day last week, they cut it after 13 mintues of mixing, and went back to regular programming, but followed their usual schedule for the other 4 days. Tonight, they stopped after mixing for only 9 minutes. Usually they start around 8:01PM and go until about 8:35PM. I can't think of any reason why these mixshows would be stopped so ahead of time unless WPGC was slowly getting rid of it as quietly as possible.

I don't know why they would do this, WKYS already has a mixshow from 6:30 to 7:00 in the evening. Seems as if WPGC would keep their 8PM mixshow. I doubt WPGC would be moving their mixshow to 6:30PM to compete with WKYS. Seeing how their musical direction has been going lately (WPGC played Pink - Raise Your Glass in a mixshow...this is a Pop-Rock song, not Rhythmic in any way), if this mixshow is going away, it's going for good and not getting replaced.

The mix has to start eariler 7:50pm or go later/longer. The problem with the 6pm-10pm slot overall is that it is VACANT Tony Redz appears to be a STOPGAP until a fresh voice is hired of course CBS takes forever to hire people. Lets see who the new night show host will be before we say what is going on with the 8pm mix.

Maybe the mixshows aren't pulling in the numbers that they want. Sad not to hear some of PGC's talented djs mixing anymore. I am waiting for them to limit the mixshows to Saturday night only just like Hot 99.5. KYS will be the mixshow destination.

Can't believe this has been over 2 years but I like the conversation. It is interesting talking about the changes on PGC and just watching them put the pieces together to win. I don't think we should kill this thread. I am sure in another two-three weeks there will be more changes. I did hear something that shocked me from a person (can't mention their name sorry) that works there. Will see what happens over the next couple of weeks.

You did not have to give a name just tell us what they told you Quietboy LOL. The 6p-10p slot is in transition WAIT AND SEE WHAT HAPPEN`S WITH IT.

Same here, tell us what they told you Quietboy, just don't say any names LOL!
