format change predictions

I think it will stay around because they do well in the desirable demographic. I am sorry but that really means something. The cost of Missinelli and Bruno really isn't that much in the scheme of things. From what I can piece together, they have the same basic overall rating as the previous format but that is completely irrelevant in this case. The jazz format skewed much older than their current audience.

WIP will win in overall ratings. They now own the programming for all 4 sports which comes at a high cost (especially for the Eagles and Phillies). PEN will be happy with them spending the $ and will be content to be in second with a much lower cost structure. As long as you bring in ad revenues that maintain a healthy profit margin, there is no reason for a format change unless it is part of a grander strategy between multiple stations. This city can easily support 2 sports talk stations especially when it is profitable.

I remember when IP stopped broadcasting the Eagles games for a while in the 90's. They maintained that the economics didn't make sense. I guess they do now.

It's about the Benjamins. And The Fanatic can do quite well being active with the fans while the games are being played.
 
I agree with that. That was the position IP took in the (I think) mid 90's regarding the Eagles. I understand their reasoning today though. They have deep pockets and want to do everything possible to maintain separation between them and 97.5. Still, I think there is zero wrong with being 2nd and having a cost structure that is well below the front runner.
 
My only issue is the direction 97.5 is heading, it's tied with the lowest FM in Philly,

And as far as I was aware Mike + Mike is pretty expensive to run.

They could maybe double their cume or profits with music.
 
That is not accurate regarding Mike & Mike. It is a shared cost and really costs 97.5 almost nothing to clear it. Actually, it is the least expensive option for them.

They could NOT double their *** with music. The audience for music is spread far and wide while sports talk is limited to 2 stations. Again, we go back to the demographics of males between 18 and 54. 97.5 does well there and that is what matters to advertisers.

You can't be 100% saying that they can't increase their cume, i'm not saying profits - I'm saying cume. Most music stations in Philly do half a mil or more cume, PEN is doing 300,000. CHR's and AC's usually cume the highest,

Look at RDW, It's morning show domination gives it a huge 1,200,000 for it not even being top five in TSL. That station is quite possibly Beasley's crown jewel.

If 97.5 flipped to a CHR... they might make 700,000 - 800,000...

That's my five cents.

Companys don't get where they are if they don't tale chances. Just look at CBS, YSP got blown up with a 2.4

Loyal WPEN-FM listeners would go to AM - more AM cume
FM would go to IP or PEN-AM or the new 97.5

They could easy make 200,000 off an AM if gets some of the fm share, some listeners don't mind the difference as much as you think, that's why there is still a .3 share while it is on fm

Potential revenue boost of 700,000? I'd just like to know if this is an unrealistic thought process
 
Let's assume such theories are accurate for the sake of argument. In that case, so what? Cume isn't the objective...it's but one factor that can influence the ultimate objective. If they don't have a better bottom line, why switch, exactly?

The only reason to switch is to try and make more money and get more audience.

Like I said... It's not as if they lose all audience by dropping an fm simulcast.
 
I just think I have some really valid points.

We could go on ad infinitum with this conversation, it's time to just drop it and see if it happens.
