Format Changes 2024

Somewhat of an exaggeration.
Q 104.3 was #2 in the current ratings for New York. Its share has been rising over the past few months.
We are still talking about 25-54 shares under or around a 5, which means that at any given time 95% of listeners are not at 104.3. It's share is wobbling within the normal margin of error range.

Also look at their cume: while the share averages in the sixes, the cume is much lower. For example, CBS-FM which has a 30% share disadvantage has roughly a 35% cume advantage.
The Q was #3 in M/S/U, and #6 on Long Island (the #1 slot there was occupied by WBAB).
Again, being #1 where about 95% of the 25-54 demos are not listening is not "huge". Q 104.3 tends to have a lower 25-54 than its 12+, and it leans old.

Country doesn't work here nor does Rock unless it's classic rock. I love Alternative Rock but it doesn't work here. Recently in part because of who programmed Alt 92.3.

For the last time, this is not the fantasy board. Audacy TRIED Country, and it DIDN'T work. Cumulus tried as well, and it STILL didn't work.

This market is not a Country or Rock market. This is a RHYTHMIC market.
Didnt say it had to be country just said a station i would listen too. :p
Sounds like a wasted effort in pettiness, but you do you.
No its fun its like in football watching belichick languish in last place.....thats sweet.
& it worked when FME or whatever it was became NASH. :p

double tongue emojis !!

It's interesting that though there is no longer a Country radio station in New York (except on an HD2), the Heartland Network, which primarily offers Country music oriented programming, leases a subchannel of WJLP TV.
Circle TV, which carries some Country music shows (though less than in the past) is on a subchannel of WCBS TV.
I don't pretend to be smarter than the average bear, but what's the number of music listeners on a TV medium? To me, the lack of a country radio station on NYC compared to a country oriented company having a digital subchannel that includes country music doesn't equate.

They appear to be doing that now. Among the Christmas songs they playing are songs by Faith Hill and Martina McBride.
Those, however, have been stapes on many a Christmas AC for years and doesn’t reflect anything outside Christmas. Apart from some outliers, nothing by those two gets played in normal format in any meaningful way. Maybe Breathe on a soft AC. All that Shania/Faith/Leann era of semi crossover country is long buried.

Correct, those names are all considered oldies now. But some country artists the age of their kids have been crossing over to Hot AC this year:

It's already 2024, and WEPN-FM (ESPN New York 98.7) is on sale. I think it is still on sale, I am not too sure about that. But I am hoping and praying it's gonna be "Que Buena Nueva York" that will buy WEPN-FM.

If you ask me why, because NYC deserves a Spanish Adult Contemporary (AC) formatted radio station for the Spanish listeners (NYC area residents) that are fans of the romantic music.

It’s certain that 107.9 will change its format once it’s sold.
107.9?! Yes, that would be great. If you are referring to WEBE 108, definitely. Of course, WEBE 108 can still be heard in The Bronx, however once you get to Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, the station is interrupted by an additional transmitter from WBLS-FM (107.5 FM).

In the picture below, it represents the coverage area for both stations. The picture on the left is the coverage map for the repeated transmitter (W300EI), the transmitter is located somewhere in Downtown Manhattan. It is covering mostly the entire city and parts of Newark and Jersey City. Now for the picture on the right, the coverage map for WEBE, look closely to the blue selected circle. It pretty much reaches almost the entire city, but it does not make it to southern Brooklyn and Staten Island entirely, not even Newark either.

So yeah, that is why I actually consider that WEBE should be operating that additional transmitter. I know it is a Connecticut radio station, it wouldn't make any sense because the personalities from WEBE updates local CT's traffic and weather. But maybe because of Studio 108 every Saturday nights, and their Holiday music playlist. It is a lot larger than WLTW's (106.7 Lite FM).

But it also does not make sense, that there's a repeater transmitter for a local station, that fully covers the entire city and the Metropolitan area. Once again, this transmitter is obstructing the blue coverage for WEBE in the city. Isn't that considered illegal?

It’s the red area on those maps that are closer to a station’s “protected contour”.

I've been thinking the real dark horse in all of this talk is either SBS or one of the Spanish companies.
SBS is off the table as they're looking like they're struggling to close their KROI deal.

TelevisaUnivision / Uforia clearly wants out of radio, they just haven't received a big enough offer yet.

Those maps from R-L are not completely accurate, even if the blue line says WEBE makes it into Manhattan.

@DavidEduardo can explain it better than me as to the ‘real’ accuracy of coverage maps.

Here's what you need to know:

Texas Hold 'Em is being played on Urban, Hot AC, Top 40, and other formats.

It's #20 on the Urban chart. It's #27 on the Top 40 chart.

The is a cross-format song similar to Adele, from the same record label that has Adele.

The Billboard Hot Country chart covers plays of songs identified as country by non-country listeners.

If Beyoncé's Texas Hold 'Em debuts #1 song next week on the Billboard Hot 100, it will be the first female African-American country music to do the #1 fourth song on the Billboard Hot 100 like Ray Charles' Georgia on My Mind with I Can't Stop Loving You and Lil' Nas X's Old Town Road both male African-American country music did on the #1 songs from the Billlboard Hot 100.

So let's hope next week it will happen.

What about Darius Rucker and Charlie Pride RIP. I can't believe Charlie Pride made the hall of fame and never had a #1 song. IMHO Darius Rucker's Wagon Wheel if it wasn't should have been #1.*

* I actually paid for a download of Wagon Wheel. I might be a slightly biased old southern rock lover. Wagon Wheel was cowritten by Dylan which is kind of surprising.

The Hot 100 chart is an all-genre chart that currently includes streaming. So while Charley had many Hot Country #1s, and Wagon Wheel was also #1 in Hot Country, it only peaked at #15 in the Hot 100. The fact that Beyonce is also getting airplay in other formats is helping drive her song to #1 in the Hot 100.
