Well...I guess it finally happened though it wasnt as earth shattering as going to Oldies or Spanish or anything else this board has predicted. It has switched to my guess Female friendly Alternative Top 40. Their new slogan: Today's Music Alternative. Gone is everything 80s except for maybe classic U2. Gone is also the DJ's.... at least from the website.. dunno if any of them will be back. Give it time, I think I might like it as I thought they played too much 80s..

I completed the Star Music Search, and unfortunately, most of what was on there were the same tunes that Star has burned through so completely in its library. I hope their definition goes heavy on newer stuff, cuz the old stuff that they deem alternative, is too over-played all ready. Here's hoping.

Peace is the word, and the Voice of the Peace is THE station, 24 hours a day. (Tribute to the VOP 1540 which broadcast for 20 years in the Eastern Mediterranean)

That slogan is SO 1998. They should have gone with "Modern Music" since it's the big thing right now. I would have dropped the "Star" name as well. If you are going to change, don't make it half-assed.

Looking at their just-played list, this would sound similar to what they would've played ten years ago.
______________

It seems like they only changed their positioning statement.

Correct me if i'm wrong but I checked out yes.com and I don't see a big change from what they are playing this morning from a few days ago.

I still notice some 80's tunes like Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Clash, Modern English, etc...

They seem to average 2-3 80's/early 90's songs per hour.

So is it really a formatic adjustment or just a positioning/marketing change?

From LARadio:

Intensive Music at STAR. KYSR has rebranded itself, "Today's Music Alternative." According to a station press release. "The new slogan highlights the recent resurgence of pop alternative music from new artists like James Blunt, Natasha Bedingfield and Daniel Powter, as well as established artists like Green Day, Nickelback and Train. Additionally, the station will offer a dramatically increased level of interactivity, providing listeners multiple opportunities to provide ongoing feedback on programming, artists, personalities and pop culture. For example, the station conducted a unique on-air music search this past Sunday that allowed listeners to vote for songs they want to hear on the radio. The results of the music search will be reflected in the station's playlist beginning today."

"The next evolution of this format is here and Star 98.7 will lead the way in Southern California," said KYSR pd Mike Marino. "This new generation of artists has joined the format's established artists in embracing the art of great storytelling in their music, and our listeners have told us they want to hear more of it. Star 98.7 will celebrate by featuring top artists from our playlist in signature live on-air Star Lounge performances every Monday in May."

General manager Craig Rossi adds, "We're thrilled about the compelling new music coming out for our format, and the results of our on-air music search yesterday confirm that there's an audience for it. We're also seeing that the power has shifted to the listener when it comes to audio entertainment choices, so Star 98.7 is going to provide lots of opportunities for listeners to tell us what they want from their radio station. And, they can connect to very cool interactive features through www.Star987.com web offerings like the Stripped Music performances, Videos on Demand, NEW!, The Star Music Store downloads and lots of other on-demand content."

To emphasize the new music offerings, the station will broadcast without air personalities until further notice, but expect Lara Scott, Lisa Foxx and Jamie White to return.

Ok heres the first problem:

In what universe are James Blunt and Natasha Bedingfield considered "alternative"? pop or otherwise?..its just pop music, hot ac, chr-pop music, period. So when all is said and done they have rebranded themselves as a MODERN AC, which is what they should have been doing forever ago, I dont think Kevin Weatherly is shaking in his boots quite yet but good luck to them, its a good enough idea hopefully it works if they can bring some hipness to it and not just make it about soccer moms and day care.

That's what the GM there wants, to re-create the better days of STAR...

Here is what is on the "just played" list on the Star website as of 2:24pm:

Savin' Me/Nickelback
Otherside/Red Hot Chili Peppers
You and Me/Lifehouse
Possession/Sarah McLachlan
Beverly Hills/Weezer
Don't Stand So Close To Me/Police
Underneath It All/No Doubt
Wherever You Will Go/The Calling
Boulevard of Broken Dreams/Green Day
Good Riddance/Green Day

The McLachlan song charted in 1994; the Police song, in 1981; and the second Green Day song, in 1997. The rest are either album cuts or charted after 1999.

Sounds like "KROQ Lite" to me.
______________

From the press release I got the impression that they were moving into sister stations KIIS territory. But after seeing the sample hour you provided they do seem like a KROQ lite or a more female friendly version of KROQ. How different is this from what they played before the change?

Well, is it me or does this station suffer from
sort of a bipolar disorder? On one hand,
you've got this soft music, guitar strumming,
female oriented vibe--more of a KOST alternative
in my book. (Music you can listen to while
waiting for a root canal.) Then, on the other hand,
you've got a rock vibe: Dramarama, Killers, etc.
The problem with this format, is, if you're like
me and want to rock all the way through,
I'm going to tune out when I hit a patch of soft
music. And not come back! So, can this station
have its cake and eat it too? Will the women
listening for the soft music stick with the
Killers or jump ship?

As I see it, looking at the playlist since midnight this morning, this is a sound for women who don't like KOST's non-stop diet of "soft rock with less talk" but who will be content with a Sarah McLachlan song thrown into a harder mix.

Think KROQ with a bit of Channel 103.1 thrown in.
______________

Sounds like Mix XM 22 which just happens to be programmed by Clear Channel.
______________

I agree with that sentiment about being KROQ lite and after listening the entire day at work I have to say I like most of what they kept though some of the 80s stuff kept like Sting/Police I could have done without. Doesnt seem to fit the format. Classic Cure/REM/U2 seem to fit well with the current heavy format. One big complaint is they are very much like a top 40 station in that they played James Blunt's beautiful 5 times today and a few other songs at least 3 or 4 times. They need more music in this mix and cut down on the repeats. Yes this station sounds alot like XM22....(and thanks to the deal with AOL, I can hear it on AIM so I dont have to have a satellite radio). But this is the music I like and hopefully they will keep on listening to the listeners and build this format. I would love to see this station get adventuresome and start picking up the softer edged stuff from Indie as well as more from KROQ. I like some of the stuff on both of those stations but too much is too hard for my tastes. What I got in listening to the station is it reminded me of the Edge in Dallas late 90's when I lived there. Moreno has been in charge of this station since August I think...what took him so long to do this?

And those of you that complain about a lack of 80s, take note they are running a HD-2 of 80s Alt/AOR crossover Hits.
______________

Or if you're like 99.9 percent of the country who don't have HD Radio, you can just hear those 80s tunes on Jack FM.

HD numbers ... wow
