Format Flips after Christmas?

Just curious how others feel about this?

My market is in Upstate SC, am I the only one that would love some format flips in this market after Christmas?

Of course the obvious, 96.7 Shine FM... (but when you are selling the message and making money, even though no one is listening, why change it--right?) and My 102.5, well...!

This market needs a new sound and would like to know what you all think as well?

Now what would I like to see? Even though we have enough country music in this market, I'd like to see a non-Clear Channel country music station--if for anything just to have a different option. It would be nice to hear a good Top 40 to compete with B93.7. Clear Channel tends to do Top 40 ok. Oldies would sound better, and even a GenX style station. GenX would work brilliantly now that I think about it more--but not a Clear Channel GenX, wow... that'd be the worst move. Entercom would do great with this.

I'd love to see 96.3 WGOG boost its power with their Dial Global country format, at least its different. And his other station 92.1 WLHR is great for the country music fans who like the 90's style country and earlier. He does great with his stations and Dial Global.

Your opinions? And your opinions about your markets?
 
I'm in GSP and I would love to see Shine 96.7 change to something else. I think they can do something with very little overhead and make more money than they could now. I like Clear Channel CHR's, I wouldn't mind an Adult leaning CHR there, or maybe rock again. Classic Hits would be nice, but there is too much overlap between that and AC, IMO. Same with Gen X, who CC has rolled out in some markets. It would fit well on 96.7 but too much overlap with AC.

My 102.5 has taken some hits, but I don't think they are in danger of a format flip. Next to change will be 96.7, but who knows when.

I totally agree; this market needs a new sound!

This market has 107.3 Jamz, which is #1 constantly in ratings, not purely urban but more like urban ac, and Hot 98.1 is your rhythmic top 40 outlet that still markets themselves as the NEW hot 98.1 when they are clearly 10 yrs old.
 
Adding to Shine 96.7, another thing I have never understood is why Clear Channel attempted it in the first place. I know it was a corporate thing, but did they not see how Entercom failed with The Walk (which actually managed 2-3 shares)? What made them think they could pull off a commercial religious station when another station, which was live/local and on a better coverage couldn't? Why not just totally automate/voicetrack The Buzzard and continue to get around 2 shares? When they did classic rock towards the end, it sounded better than WROQ!

Possible formats for 96.7 are still any type of rock based format, CHR even (I love CC's CHRs)....the market could fit another Urban station I think but not on 96.7. It would need to be on a stronger signal to fully take on Jamz. 98.1 is a typical cookie-cutter Cox signal.
 
flippers I would consider are 93.3, 96.7, 103.3, 103.9, and 104.9. 106.3 would also be a flipper if rush overdosed. that's their only ace. clearly a chess game to see which company wants to use their lesser signal to improve their rank. does 93.3 really help 101.1's rank?

Agree, but 103.3 and 103.9 are time shared, wouldn't that be difficult to flip? As long as the $$ comes in, they don't care.

93.3 is a candidate also, yeah, but as bad as they sound, they've sat around with less than impressive ratings for years. I would put my money on Urban or maybe even Entercom's "Wolf" country format to try to take on CC if one ever happens.

It was stated by someone on another thread about 96.7 that it was a move using corporate strategies. Should have added that it was my understanding, sorry.

The Upstate is missing out and plenty of HipHop and R&B songs that neither Cox stations will play. A new Urban station will shake up the market im sure. I believe 107.3 JAMZ was once Arbitron's station of the year? If it was, then thats a slap in the face for competition.
 
Speaking of All-Christmas, I was pleasantly surprised to hear Hunter Herring this afternoon on Magic 98.5 while visiting Columbia. Although he was just filling-in for T.J. McKay, he still sounds like he hasn't missed a beat.

Here's an idea...93.3 goes Urban like WPEG (maybe 107.3 would re-focus to U/AC), then 96.7 picks up the rock torch and gives the market a better rocker. Looks like both stations would come out as winners over what they are currently broadcasting.

Has Jamz ever had competition? A second Urban could fit in to the market, no doubt about it.

Why not dump the PD at 93.3 & improve their existing product?

As the Upstate is OVERWHELMINGLY White, I don't quite follow these calls I see for yet another urban station. Between 107, 98 & the Charlotte signals, I'd say the market is very well served!

When you've got a station getting close to a 10 share, any format, I think it's safe to say someone could take them on. 98.1 is not Urban, it's rhythmic CHR that has way more in common with B93.7 than an Urban station/WJMZ.

93.3; WROQ sees great success, sometimes top 5 12+ - seeing that both stations have the same PD, what is he doing at 101.1 but not 93.3? 93 needs a total revamp, something Entercom will never do. Have they done anything to improve it since they bought it from Barnstable? I always thought they would fix the processing...
 
Upstate I think that too many people take a market on face value only ie:book value and not completely on what signals can be received in that area from all areas around them which the general public doesn't care about except for local content if they can hearit and like it they will listen. Also good point about the white population ratio in the upstate area. I can see how this would effect listening of different music formats when you look from market to market.

A real and new Urban station would actually hurt 107.3 JAMZ and HOT 98.1. Those are the only 2 stations black people in the Greenville upstate area listen to. White people make up a large portion of Hip-Hop listeners as well as consumers.

Agreed. In my eyes Jamz is the only true Urban station, 98.1 is a pathetic excuse for a Rhythmic CHR that seems pretty white to me, in target at least. A total Urban station WOULD work and would hurt 107.3 and 98.1. I can't believe 107 has gone so long unchallenged with the numbers they pull. The Charlotte stations should not be any barrier to another Urban station (WPEG's signal struggles past Spartanburg)....

Anyway, Merry Christmas to R-I and hopefully 2011 brings some changes to the market.

I bet you dollars to doughnuts that MANY Upstate blacks listen to country! You cannot convince me that the black community is only interested in rattling the trunks of their cars!
