Format flips: Who's next?

Who does everyone have as their top two or three stations likely to flip format in 2006?

Mine are 99.7 and 92.9. Likely new formats for these might be a true classic hits format with a deep playlist (like, more than 250 songs) aimed at 30-somethings, and talk (despite the train wreck that was Real Radio 105.3).

What say youze?

That would give Infinity a huge combo to sell to advertisers, and the 92.9 signal could kill Kiss (whose signal is not bad since the power increase). The only thing that makes me think that won't happen is that V-103 is so strong all the way to age 50. Flipping 92.9 to urban AC would canibalize the older end of V-103's audience.

I agree with Brian (above) that the biggest story of 2006 could be whatever happens to 99.7.
 
Dave-FM to... Free-FM?

CBS actually registered the domain 93freefm.com this week... It would make sense, since they hold the radio rights to the Falcons.<P ID="signature">______________

I think if they wanted to flip Dave they would've registered 929freefm.com, which is still up for grabs.

I agree, but you have to know the the KISS signal reaches a huge, more predominantly Black audience that 92.9.

99X needs to go back to POWER99

My hunch says that 680 may flip formats-I say this because 790 the Zone seems to be the firmly established Sports Format in this city. I would like to see a station like 680 go to a 24-hour news station, much like a station like WTOP in Washington or WBBM in Chicago. It's a sad commentary for a city like Atlanta who is supposed to be the 11th largest radio market to not have a 24-hour local news station. We have more than enough news/talk hot air on the radio!!

Correction it is now number 10.
And, I totally agree with you.
I love listening to WBBM which is more audible than WTOP.
It is comforting to hear a real live voice that has not been voice tracked at 3 a.m.
WCNN needs to do this desperately to save themselves.
Plus what does CNN tell you? NEWS>>>>>>>>Not all sport's.

Thanks for the correction-BTW, WTOP is now an all FM station on 103.5
in the DC area after looking at their website this week.

Agree with you on WBBM, they are a consistent top 5 station!

99x to Country

Cumulus knows Country. And with Bandy And Baily synicated now, 99x could flip to compete with Kicks. They could easily beat X's -(rhymes with do)- share.

WCNN-680 once was All News, but I think only for a short time. When I moved to Atlanta in late 1988 it was All News, but flipped to something else (I'm thinking Music of Your Life or something similar) within a month or two or three. I agree, Atlanta needs an All News station. Trying to get news/weather/traffic is near impossible whenever WSB is in sports programming. And that other station on 640 doesn't even count...are they still on the air? WCNN has the second best AM signal in town, seems to me like the best place for the format. All News is a very expensive format. Big money would have to be spent to do it right. It would take time. So...I doubt it'll ever happen. I like "680 News" in Toronto. Check them out at www.680news.com

WCNN fliped from an all talk format as WRNG Ring Radio to WCNN. It was really never a good news format. They did local news five minutes out of the hour and stuck with Headline news the other 25 minutes. Actually, the news sounders that Headline News was using at the time made the whole product annoying. There was a high pitched note that seems to sound much louder on AM than it did on cable.

I am a news junkie. When I was a teen I loved WGST when they were all news. I too believe that Atlanta should have an all news station. New York has two very good all news stations WCBS and WINS. Each has a different product and I cannot get enough of them... I listen over the web.

WCNN would not be my choice for an all news format just because Dickey would do it on the cheap. He has tried news radio twice (WCNN and then WFOM/WIGO) and both times did it on the cheap. Both times it failed.

No...

Eagle is not "New" Country. Someone needs to go up against Kicks. Hip Hop is mainstream, New Rock is mediocore, and New Country crosses over VERY well with adults. And continues to grow...

Yes, I remember WGST back in the 80's as "News Radio 92" when they
were on the 920 frequency. Great news station then for Atlanta, and
this was when the Atlanta radio market was nowhere near one of the
largest radio markets in the nation.

I think if someone like Infinity broadcasting bought out Dickey and
grabbed hold of 680 then an all-news format can work, especially
since Infinity owns a vast majority of the Major News stations like
KYW, WCBS, and WBBM.

My guess is they'd try and shake the stigma of "929". You don't want consumers to associate the NEW product with the old, failed, sad, pathetic, self-indulgent, just-cause-you're-high-doesn't-make-you-cool-gotta-be-cool-first product. I think 93freefm would absolutely be the best choice. (besides, and this is scary, if you tell a station was 929 and ask them to find it on the dial... a surprising portion couldn't. Worked for a station years ago that was 100.5 on the dial. EVERY diary, we'd be splitting a huge chunk of OUR ratings because folks wrote down 105 instead... this is the longest parenthetical I've ever written).

The fault doesn't lie solely with the music, which is like some 7-year-old sugar addled tourette's kid that instead of spitting out obscenities barks out random song titles. Blame is at the top with the PD. Bad choices compounded by bad guidance.

Then again, Cumulus is gaining some good N/T experience with KFNC in Houston. I've listened to it, and it's a good product, albeit it's taking some time to catch on down there.
