Format flips: Who's next?

Just my personal opinion. I cannot stand Alternative. That format is getting very tired.

Thanks for the link, but what does it really say in non-corporate language? I thought I would at least find out SOMETHING in the FAQ's like the following:

"How is FREE FM different from other talk formats?
FREE FM represents an attitude that just doesn't exist on today's radio dial. Its programming goes beyond the opinionated political and public affairs programs that dominate traditional AM talk stations, and takes the current generation of talk stations to new heights through a combination of fresh voices and additional entertainment options."

OK. What kind of attitude? What is the programming really like? etc. So many words - so little said. (The question told me more than the answer.) The only thing I could get was that it is a talk format that is NOT local in a market that is screaming for local. (At least the 105.3 flop had some local. Maybe CBS can do it better.)

So, please excuse my ignorance also, but I can only stomach just so much corporate cr-- stuff.

I believe most of the Free-FM'ers have at least one local program on its schedule (e.g. Leslie Gold, Booker and others in NY, The Junkies in DC and Baltimore, Kidd Chris in Philly, etc.) I think the Phoenix station is the only one without a local talk program.<P ID="signature">______________

How about a Variety Hits format? The only difference is that there is LIVE TALENT on the air instead of it being automated 24-7.

Personally I'd love for 99.7 to go back to Power 99 as well, but in today's radio market, that's highly unlikely.

Yup. I speculated after the last ratings book that Cumulus might switch 99X to FM Talk. That switch seems more likely than ever.

That would be a great format. I wish it was 1975 again.

They could try Power 99 as a true Hot AC and try to get back listeners of the old Power 99. Just because KZZP in Phoenix tried it and burned doesn't necessarily mean it's guaranteed to happen here in Atlanta.

KZZP failed as a Modern AC because Jacor, which owned KZZP, launched KMXP "Mix 96.9", as a Hot AC. Jacor essentially forced their two stations to battle it out, and KZZP lost. I doubt that heritage had too much to do with the failure, in fact, it's what helped get the station started.

99x flipping...not so fast

I dont know. When's the last time an Atlanta station with that much local heritage/success flipped so dramatically? It was probably when Power flipped to 99x. I dont think 99 is dead yet.

It does make you wonder what would have happened if Mark Renier had agreed to pay Rich Shertenlieb more than 50k to stay with the Morning X. I think Rich is having a nice chuckle over this.

With all the things Toucher has to deal with management at 99x... Rich was better off leaving. Renier didn't care about keeping Rich and he is trying to drive Toucher out of 99x. My $$ is on the Fred will not renew his contract and with Rich start a morning show somewhere else.

If 99x did flip it would be the equivalent of when 94Q became Star 94 or when Hot New Z-93 flipped from CHR to classic rock.
