Format for 100.3 in August will be....?

The studios are behind O'Charleys on Kingston Pike next to the Old Kingston Towne Center. Look for the Danka sign out front, and the brand new black satellite dish on the roof...

I also heard that and drove past there about twenty minutes ago. Saw some vehicles of some well known air talent parked out front. I wonder if they're jumping the shrinking ship or just checking out the new kids in town?

reportedly a trike and a skateboard were seen locked down on the front door and loud giggling could be heard coming from deep in the building.

WNOX RADIO TO STAY PUT, REMAIN NEWS-TALK

Radio listeners who enjoy keeping up with the news and opinion programs of WNOX, FM 100.3 will like the long-awaited announcement of the station's format plans.

“As of midnight July 31, when our marketing agreement with Citadel Communications ends, WNOX will continue broadcasting a full schedule of local and network news and talk programs to serve all the people of Knoxville and surrounding states,” said WNOX General Manager Ed Brantley. Brantley, former manager of the Citadel stations in Knoxville, was hired by WNOX owner John Pirkle to create Knoxville's only locally owned and operated 100,000 watt FM station, which will remain on its 100.3 frequency once the agreement with Citadel and its programs ends.

Brantley, who made his name with WIVK as an air personality and host of the “Sound Off” program for almost 20 years, will host the morning drive talk show on WNOX. “We have the largest-wattage transmitter and the highest antenna allowable under FCC Rules, giving WNOX Knoxville radio's largest coverage area, and one of the strongest signals in the nation. We are excited to continue providing quality news and talk programing to parts of several states.

“As much as I like the business side of broadcasting, I have, in recent years, found myself missing also being on the air,” Brantley said. “My new role allows me to start each day doing talk radio, then spend the remainder of the day in management, sales and community involvement. After several years in absentee-owned corporate radio, this is like a dream come true for me.” A bonus for the Knoxville community, Brantley says, is the creation of new jobs. “We are currently interviewing applicants for approximately a dozen jobs, most of them in advertising sales.

“We hope the listeners will like the quality programs we will be offering, including Neil Boortz, Michael Savage, liberal commentator Alan Colmes (formerly of Hannity and Colmes) and other nationally known names.”

Brantley says the station will also offer something that is not otherwise available on Knoxville news talk radio. “We will include sports in our mix of news and talk, offering listeners a balance they cannot get on a single FM station.” Brantley says discussions with several sports anchors are underway, and their names will announced in the near future.

HOLY COW! Did ANYBODY on here get it right? Whoops.....!

HOLY COW! is right! This whole thing sort of questions the wisdom of even reading this stuff.
Many radio-philes pretending to be experts, with inside info, etc., seem to have been almost totally wrong. Yet, when you stop and think about it, talk is the soundest possible decision. People already go to 100.3 for talk radio, and the alternative has less power. So the 100.3 "monster" should continue to be the destination for talk junkies. I noticed there was no mention of Rush in Murvl's post, but, even though I am somewhat conservative, I think WNOX will do just fine without him with the programs they have announced. I am also happy for the marginal Country broadcasters who will not be affected. If Brantley and co. had gone country, I bet some of those guys would have had to change formats. As it is, all is well in WNOX Land!

So they stole Boortz and Noory from Citadel, and picked up Savage? That's going to hurt 98.7. But wait, they're also going to have sports and Alan Colmes?

Will the last person to leave the Citadel building please turn the lights off.

Does anybody know if the bankruptcy court screwed with the Vol Network contract?

Just hit WATE.com

If this is a Pirkle stunt, it's going to be huge!

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Long time Knoxville radio station WNOX will stay on its 100.3 FM frequency once its agreement with Citadel Communications and its programs ends at midnight on July 31.

The announcement Wednesday reverses a plan announced in June for the station to move to 98.7 FM.

WNOX will also continue broadcasting a full schedule of local and network news and talk programs.

General manager Ed Brantley, who made his name with WIVK as an air personality and host of the "Sound Off" program for almost 20 years, will host the morning drive talk show on WNOX.

Brantley says the decision has created new jobs. "We are currently interviewing applicants for approximately a dozen jobs, most of them in advertising sales."

Brantley says the station will also offer sports coverage, and discussions with several sports anchors are underway. Their names will announced soon.

WNOX is Knoxville's only locally owned and operated 100,000 watt FM station.

I personally think that the new 100.3 should continue a talk format and steal the big names away. Rush loves to live large doesn't he? He has a large audience, paycheck, and waist size. Wouldn't he (Hannity and Boortz included) rather go with a "BigTalker" that can cover "2 time zones and 5 states" instead of "5 counties" (if that)?? I wonder if they will switch stations because of this change...

And during an election year!?! The conservative powers that be really dropped the ball on this one.

Wow...do I actually get to tell the corporate radio elite I told ya so? And I was the only one that suggested that this would happen. I feel as happy as caller #9 winning tickets to see Miley!! Every single one of you all were sold on country! Why compete against something that already exists? It makes much more sense to keep it the same format. Stronger signal, probably going to have (and win over) the big personalities, same call letters. I have learned in internet radio that listeners are faithful to the format, not the particular station. Yes, listeners will tune in and hear a new show..but they will still still hear right wing talk. And as long as they hear the same, familiar conservative radio topics...they will stay. It is a lot of trouble to reprogram button #2 on your car's radio to a signal that barley gets out after all.

In an election year, it is way to costly to have the manufactured right wing propaganda stop. We have to keep that Obama hate going strong! I see Rush having a new home soon.

I think the skiing dude has a point.

But, they're not going to be a news/talk station. They've made no secret that they're going with a music, possibly country, format.

The "skiing dude" made an excellent point. And where exactly did you say you heard this secret from? In the future, do not doubt my amazing psychic powers.

Very interesting if this is true. (by the way, WATE, this doesn't reverse the decision to move the existing programs to 98.7). So Citatel gets a News Talk competitor on the old signal, loses the WNOX calls and branding, and if someone writes WNOX in a diary 100.3 gets credit. Maybe Citadel should just keep True Oldies on 98.7 after all! Last I knew it was a 90-day out on Rush Limbaugh contracts, so the possibility of him moving back to 100.3 is still possible.

But that does mean there won't be this earth-shattering realignment of formats all over the dial that many had hoped for.

Also noting Pirkle and Brantley have already yanked two shows away from Citadel; Boortz and Coast to Coast AM. It may not be long before Rush is on 100.3 again. Who does 98.7 fill those vacant slots with?

Something tells me the parties will end up in court over the WNOX call letters and branding. Did Citadel protect its "intellectual property"?

I will hazard a prediciction. The parties end up in court, but agree to settle on the Pirkles ending up with all the intellectual property for WNOX and News Talk 100. Note the double-play of Savage from 12-3 and 6-9; sounds like they're keeping the chair warm for Rush. Citadel abandons News-Talk and does something else with 98.7.

This is monumental. WNOX stays news/talk on 100.3. Talk about strategy. The diary confusion alone will generate mucho buzz and billing. I gotta hand it to Brantley and the Pirkle boys, they know radio and they know the Knoxville market.

The only thing left is for Citadel to make their announcement in a couple of months that 98.7 is going back to the Oldies Channel programming "due to an overwhelming show of local support."

There should be some kind of public record on this. Can anybody tell the computer-unsavvy (me) how to look this up? THAT would be a (second) game-changer.

Just what Knoxville needs, another talk station. Either the 98.7 or 100.3 format will tank by the end of the year. I tend to think that talk is a plan B for 100.3/Pirkle until he gets plan A ready to go.
