Format Void?

With most major formats (i.e, Classic Rock, Oldies, AC, Country, Talk, Sports) covered, is it possible that a Contemporary Christian format might thrive on one of the fringe AM's, say WJJL, WLVL, WSPQ, WXRL or one of the weaker FM's in the market? Your reasoned response is appreciated.

Most definately, it would work.
esp. if it was done with the vision of a "FISH"/"Torch" approach..
Playing current 'hits/songs' and not too preachy..throw in some
sizzlin' hot production, and i think it would make an impact !

*FOOTNOTE*
WDCX does play..some music, but not enough..and the middle of the
night, they play the best of the church organ, volume 3...

104.7/101.7/88.3?/all have the same thing in common:

Some music..but not a consistent schedule...and, too 'preachy'
(which ironically this format is the best place for it )but,
the best way to announce and praise it's Christin music, and
not be too forward...well, listen to star102/wjye when they
play.. Mercy-ME for example..

"..that is the inspirational hit from the group..."
"..that is the group attracting alot of attention at kingdom bound.."

plays the music; gets the point across, and doesn't make u feel
u are damned...but lifts your spirit..i think a Contemp-Christin
station would be fair well in buffalo-niagara falls..

You might want to check out 104.7 WCOU or 89.3 WPCS translators. WDCX and WLOF have the market covered in the way of Christian/Catholic programming. WDCX makes massive amounts of cash with its pray for pay programming. WLOF runs on a shoestring and is apparently listener supported. Depending on who grabs 92.1, there might be a contemporary-christian format on that frequency.

Question is, would this type of format get any substantial listeners in Buffalo?

Janos, it's good to see you back on the board. Have you been on vacation? You always bring up great topics for discussion.

First of all, WXRL might be considered a fringe AM station because of its small numbers. But it's also a station that has a very loyal audience. Ramblin' Lou makes money from it. The format will never change from country as long as Lou and his family own it.

Now, to answer your question, in my occasional channel surfing, I think I've heard contemporary Christian on some of the religious stations that have sprung up in recent years. So, I would question whether there would be a real market for that. Even WDCX, with its monster signal, has a minimal audience. I doubt putting such a format on a weak AM signal would attract much.
